Rumor: Gran Turismo 6 for the PS3

That seems nuts.

I don't tell my boss what I won't do. I can strongly suggest why I don't want to and why I/we should do that, but at the end of the day he makes the final decisions.

Its a good decision and I am happy Sony respected the creator of their most iconic franchise. GT's reputation is very high and its fanbase is there for simulation not arcade racing. Yeah the cars may look realistic but thats all the two games have in common.

GT is their baby. They had to make Motor Toon Grand Prix in order to prove to Sony that they could create a successful series. That was because at the time no one was making sim racers on consoles, so Sony wanted something that could compete with Mario Kart. That eventually allowed them to make GT. So why would they be ok with another company piggybacking off the brand that they created?

Well yeah, I get that. But ultimately the decision is on Sony. They give PD a lot of power. Maybe rightfully so....maybe not.

Ha! I think it is weird it isn't announced though. Sony's own games tend to have a 1-1.5 year lead time from announcement to release.
This is what makes no sense to me. If GT6 is hitting PS3 how do we not know about it yet. I can't see something like GT having a surprise early release and announcing GT6 for PS3 alongside any PS4 announcements would bring the PS4 hype train to a screeching halt.

Gran Turismo 6 is fine on PS3. Then they will make the game engine work on PS4 and use it's power to make it look better and release it as "GT6: Turbo HD" edition in 2014. Then GT7 will come out in 2016 as the definitive version.

Is the audio of the whole interview anywhere? Seems like had finished talking about PS4, probably mentioning DriveClub along the way... then he moved to PS3, didn't sound confused at all. Is there anything due this year on PS3 with a 6 in title?

Pfft.. It cant be gran turismo 6. With the release of drive club at launch, Sony would be wise to announce GT 6 after the PS4 launch at the following E3. Thats where I'm betting my money.

Gran Turismo 6 for late 2014 confirmed.

They've released two GTs on each console so far... why would it be a mistake this time?

GT4 came out 2 years before the PS3 was available. This would put the second GT within months of the launch of a new system.

I love racing games. Love GT, but the technical limitations of what the PS3 was capable of and what PD wanted GT5 would be were too much. It's much better suited for the PS4.

I will not rebuy a PS3 to play GT6. So I guess I won't play GT6 if it's only on PS3.

GT6 released on Ps3 by the end of the year, Drive Club once I get it with the Ps4 in mid or at the end of '14 (if I buy the Ps4 by then and if it has an interesting single player mode) plus GT7 by the end of 2015. Sounds like a plan.

I don't really think it will take GT4 to GT5 long for us to see GT7.

It all depends on how much assembly they wrote down in GT5's engine.

I really can't make any sense of it to be honest. Sony really need to clear it up, but I don't think they will.

I love GT5, it being one of my most played games this gen. But it had some problems, and when PD talked about the hardware limitations they faced with the PS3, I shrugged and thought to myself, "there's only so much they can do with a split pool of 512mb's of ram" Why would PD make GT6 on PS3 when they know they can't improve it?

Well, consider how many franchises Sony created during the PSone days, now consider how many of those are still relevant today.

My only guess is that they figured to some tricks that would allow them to get around those issues. Kaz did mention that after GT5 they would be communicating with the other internal teams a lot more. Getting insight from Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, Evolution etc. might've been what they needed. For example, GT5 is one of the very few PS3 games that uses 4xMSAA. I believe that it eats up a lot of memory, which is exactly what PD had issues with on the platform. If they swap that out for MLAA or FXAA, that could help a lot.

Kagari says one thing. John Harker says another. Perhaps both are right.

Would make more sense to release GT6 on both PS3 and PS4 for holiday 2014.

Surprisingly enough Sony actually commented on this

We reached out to Sony for comment and clarification. All a Sony rep was willing to tell us was the following: “In 2010, Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed that Polyphony Digital had commenced development for Gran Turismo 6. We look forward to sharing further details on this title in the near future.” When pressed for more information beyond that, Sony refused to give us further comment.

As IGN goes on to say, dev kits for the PS4 probably weren't even in the hands of first party devs at that time.

Ah balls.

I honestly dont want gran turismo 6 on the PS3. I had no interest in 5 and just recently got rid of it.

That's just me though. I am sure tons of people would appreciate this release but I expect polyphony to release a prologue episode first, and weren't they already complaining about the PS3's limitations?

I would be more likely to try it out next gen again, but no way I am likely to try this franchise again. Sims were never a big thing for me.

GT6 on ps3?

no way in hell that is happening.

Edit: Just read the ign article lol. drive club looks to be the new GT series for ps4?

couldn't PD just port gt6 to ps4? would be so stupid to release GT6 this late in the ps3 life cycle when the ps4 is literally months away from release...

Oh man, I don't like where this is going. :(

I've already accepted that it's going to be a PS3 game. Now i'm just thinking about all the content that it'll likely have

Lucas gave away that Gran Turismo 6 production is in progress and we will be very surprised how accurate and well-reproduced are all the tracks. Also, the amount of them will be simply jawdropping.

Why not?

This makes ZERO sense, especially when the PS4 is not BC.
Why does it have anything to do with PS4? That won't be out until the end of the year the earliest, and probably next year for Europe, which is where Gran Turismo sells the most. Why does it make zero sense to release an incredibly popular game for your current console that has millions of users, before launching your next console?

I'll try and do some more digging but like amar, my source was very positive GT6 was a PS4 title. Maybe it's cross-gen? Dunno, but the thought pattern was that Sony didn't want GT to come out years after their next system launch this time.

In that case, GT6 is looking more and more like a cross-gen title.

Let us be real here

gt6 would be nigh on identical to gt5 on ps3 hardware

gt5 is already pushing the ps3 to its limits. Hence why the sound effects are so bad, they literately have no memory left to add higher quality sound effects.

if they could then they would of improved them via the 1000 patches they have released for gt5. but no, they remain identical.

its a waste in my honest opinion. They should just delay it and port the code to ps4 hardware.

Watch GT6 have GT4 levels of content for PS3, and GT7 on PS4 be another gimped mess.

That really isn't necessary anymore. All content should be able to be built in a way that they're scalable to future consoles. The PS2 generation really didn't allow that. Which is why certain tracks and standard cars stand out so much.

Drive Club was originally going to be a GT title but Polyphony blocked it.
Which is ridiculous if true. Polyphony work for Sony, not the other way around. Sony owns the franchise they could (should) do what they please with the name.

Wouldn't surprise me though as Kaz has the keys to the castle over there. He's basically the president of Sony with how much freedom he has to do whatever he wants.

Sony need to grow some balls and crack the whip.

PD has more involvement than you might think though. They helped develop the PS Vita and PS4 hardware for example.

If the rumours about PS4 releasing 2014 in Europe, this would be a good way for Sony to push PS3 units and make money from GT6 this holiday. And if it turns out to be a cross-generation game, they can release the PS4 version some time after PS4 launch.

GT6 on the PS4 at launch would be freakin HUGE!

It would be *the* title that could start things off with a bang. The rest of the stuff I've seen so far is pretty ho hum (even if it's looks better).

That seems nuts.

I don't tell my boss what I won't do. I can strongly suggest why I don't want to and why I/we should do that, but at the end of the day he makes the final decisions.

Everybody seems to forget how Kazunori Yamauchi is the vice-president of SCEJ for a decade and how two executives which are in fact sitting in Polyphony Digital's Board of Directors are Yoshida and Hirai. Also for a decade.

Yamauchi is not some vague non-managed self-mongering developer, he is one of the highest and most influential people in SCEW with untouchable track-record (pun intended) and unique status - absolutely well deserved from business and any other field of view, whatever anyone can think about *State of GT5* personally.

And all this talk about DriveClub wanted to be GT branded is nuts, anyone who even get the idea should have keep it to himself and never get into current situation that only logical and expected outcome of such *proposal* becomes a matter of public debate on internet forums.

This is stupid. PD should simply cancel PS3 development and simply port to the PS4.

Just port what they already have at 1080p 60fps, throw in clean lighting and showing, and a good measure of AA.

I'll buy, and I'm sure every other GT fan would also buy.

With Sony commenting to IGN like that, it's pretty much a done deal. GT6 will be coming out on the PS3. I'm surprised there isn't a year lead in for marketing for a game like this.
Hopefully we get more answers at E3.

Interesting.

PD were masters of graphics for the PS1 and PS2. I hope they can reclaim their status as tech wizards when the PS4 arrives.
