Rumor: KH2.8 supports 4K resolution on the PS4 Pro

One less reason? What?
Don't you mean more? Not likely the normal PS4 version will have it if it's true.
I mean for me to upgrade to the Pro, I want 60 fps rather than 4K. So, if the Pro is just increasing the res, but not the frame rate, then that's one less reason to upgrade to the Pro.

KH's art style is such that it doesn't benefit that much from a res increase. But playing 0.2's fast paced combat in 60 fps would indeed be a great feature.

I wonder if KH3 will get the same treatment?

Isn't it being released after the Pro, so it's mandated to have a Pro mode?

The only Pro modes are upscaling to 4K which is built into the system, or enhanced visuals, so this seems like non-news to me, unless I'm mistaken.

Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Well, it probably won't be out next year. Early 2018 is my guess.
They still need the time to re-re-release everything on PS4 into one mega ultra #^*Sigma/2 edition, so I agree with you.

At this point, they have to - the Kingdom Hearts series is ridiculously convoluted, then again, the story is complete shit so it doesn't really matter.

Nice. The older PS2 games look really good at 4k (as do most games with that AO style lighting)

Pro owners should be in for a treat!

Thing is, it's not really all that convoluted, it's just presented in such a poor way that it seems convoluted. Plus, at least two of the games are filler that mean nothing, and those are getting cutscene releases.

DDD is the only one that genuinely confused me.

Again, another case where I would prefer them pushing 0.2 to 60fps if possible.
Only way 4K is going to benefit me is via supersampling to a 1080p TV, can't see me getting 4K for a while, if ever.

That's funny. DDD is the one that made me convinced Nomura's crazy ass had all of this pretty much at LEAST outlined from the start (or at the very least, from the end of KH 1's dev cycle when he planned COM.) because it made everything make sense to me.

Playing them in the order the collections have them seems to be doing just fine for my girlfriend, who I just finally managed to get into the games. I've heard playing them in release order does a fine job too. I understood everything that way myself, by any means.

I was with you man.

Until they introduced time travel. Yeah, good job nomura. Let's add fucking time travel to this series. Thats what kh needs more of. Time travel.
The time travel is actually a big element of what made everything make sense to me lol

As in both games?

I know that DDD HD is 60FPS 1080, so does that mean it will be 60FPS 4K? I'm guessing A Fragmentary Passage will just bo 30FPS 4K.

well you could start by explaining why I'm wrong instead of "SMH"

From Eurogamer (and from the announcement video itself):
The quality of the upscaling varies on a title by title basis, but at its best, in living room conditions, it looks close to native. The principle behind the 'checkerboard' scaling is pretty straightforward - a 2x2 pixel structure is extrapolated up to 4x4, apparently using new hardware built into PS4 Pro's GPU, so there is no cost to developers. The real question is how the hardware does the job.

Where does it say

The only Pro modes are upscaling to 4K
?

Also Eurogamer is wrong Checkerboard rendering is not upscaling & even if it was there is still some games that are 4K native without checkerboard rendering.

Are there more Pro modes than checkerboard 4K and higher fidelity 1080p? I was under the impression those were the two options with a Pro. Feel free to correct me here.

"Pro mode" is used in Sony's leaked documentation to describe the mode the hardware is in when the full clock speeds and extra GPU resources are enabled on a PS4 Pro. That's in contrast to the "Base mode" which describes the performance of the PS4 at launch, the PS4 slim, and the PS4 Pro when running older titles that were never tested in Pro mode.

What a game actually does with Pro mode is almost entirely up to the developer. They can offer as many options to users as they want, as demonstrated by Rise of the Tomb raider which offers three distinct options when running in Pro mode (enhanced 30fps 1080p, unlocked frame rate 1080p, or 30fps 4K that is presumed to use checkerboarding but I haven't seen confirmation.) Other games have native 4K rendering and I'm sure we'll see plenty of additional choices made by other titles.

Eurogamer's description of checkerboard rendering is way off the mark. It's typically rendering half the pixels in a frame (think of the black spaces on a checkerboard) via the usual manner, not one quarter, and then integrating the other half from the prior frame (in this scenario the white spaces) where it makes sense and interpolating where it doesn't. Whether the full checkerboard would be 4K or something like 1600p depends on the developer's needs, with anything less than 4K requiring upscaling. Calling the checkerboard strategy "upscaling" just confuses matters.

DDD ruined it for me by revealing the Organization's "true" plan and that Nobodies can regrow hearts. Makes a lot of impactful character arcs and moments seem rather pointless to me. And then you have the whole, "X allows Xehanort to track you," thing going on. And the time travel aspect didn't help anything for me. It didn't help it make any more sense.

Or maybe I was just upset at the fact that EVERY SINGLE THING THAT HAPPENED WAS XEHANORT'S PLAN. That really wrecked everything. Time travel notwithstanding.
I was with you man.

I'm all for time travel and alternate timeline/dimension shenanigans, but time travel literally meant nothing to me. Aside from it kind of explaining how Xehanort would be able to plan everything to reach his endgame, but then that makes certain twists super dumb to me, because he should have been able to predict it. It's just not explained very well how that time travel system works, is the problem.

I'm gonna play DDD when 2.8 drops but the story made me super salty right at the end.

That won't happen neither on Pro or Scorpio... they are new hardware to delivery the same gameplay with better graphics than PS4/XB1.

Only games in 60fps in PS1/XB1 will be 60fps on Pro/Scorpio.

That was know since beginning... no gameplay advantage for Pro/Scorpio users.

You getting confused with calling it a "mode". It's an optio n. Devs are free to scale what they see fit including native rendering at 4K. There is just in built enchantments to make specific rendering techniques less intensive on the system than it would otherwise be.

Edit - Missed Lady Gaia's post which better explains things.

Checkboard upscaling is one option to devs... they can not use it and do whatever they wants.

Native 4k
1080p enhanced
Others 4K upscaling techs

There are multiples options to use the extra power with Pro and devs can deliver how many options they wish.

BTW modes are presets choose by devs to run based in console + HDTV (or give options to user choose).

That's only for MP games.

SP games can theoretically be increased to 60 on the Pro.

My expectations would be:

DDD: 2160p60
0.2: checkerboard 2160p30 (or optional uncapped framerate like inFAMOUS) if Days Gone is any indication of wider UE4 temporal reprojection quality with checkerboard rendering, the quality should be high.
Back Cover: 2160p30

The game content is compact enough on a Blu-ray, they could comfortably fit both PS4 1080p AVC and Pro 2160p HEVC encodes of the HD video content.
