RUMOR: Other XCOM game now a third person shooter, $30 downloadable game (screens)

"While the 1960s setting and general XCOM prequel vibe remains, it's now apparently being pitched as a squad-based game similar to SOCOM or Republic Commando, with the player in command of a team of agents, which you can order around the map to perform various actions."

This was already a thing in the FPS version wasn't it?
Yeah, last time they showed it you definitely had a squad that you could order around kind of Mass Effect style. That's how people were describing it actually since you could pause and command the same way.

Also it's kind of funny:

Other XCOM announced - "FUCK YOU, WE WANT REAL XCOM"
Real XCOM announced and releasing next month - "YAY XCOM!"
Other XCOM changes - "FUCK YOU, WE WANT OTHER XCOM BACK"

Gamers are like an insane ex.
This is complete bullshit and you know it.

Other XCOM was announced first. NO HINT WHATSOEVER there was going to be a faithful XCOM being made. People were outraged and requested change.

Faithful XCOM announced. People happy. Other XCOM might as well do whatever it wants because it doesnt really matter anymore.

Other XCOM changes for the worst, people saying bring back original because if its going to be different it might as well stick to the better original idea than this new stupid squad thing.

I NEED SCISSORS - Like insane ex who leaves out important fact in story to push agenda.

Looks rad to me. I'm thinking Mass Effect with more strategy and less RPG. I like the setting and I'm a big fan of ME style combat.

Bioshock 2 topped the original for me, so I'm curious about what 2KMarin can do with this franchise. Hopefully they can get past the troubled past and put out something special.

Here's what they should do at this point: Cancel the game, cut their losses for real, take all the assets, artwork, designs, etc for the game and give them to Firaxis, make a 30 buck X-Com: Enemy Unknown expansion pack in 6-8 months set in 60s.

They have probably spent $25+ million on this game already though.

They should release all three incarnations of this game in one package. I'd buy that for a reasonably high price.

Can't wait for the rage when this steaming pile of shit outsells Enemy Unknown 10-to-1.
It won't. If you've been following the industry, shooters haven't been selling particularly well. Unloved shooters that squander their legacies (like Syndicate) have been outright disastrous flops.

But, but... I love Syndicate.

Downloadable Xcom TPS now? Oh, well this looked awful from the start anyway.

So, let me get this straight.

2005/2006: RTS by the Freedom Force team.

2007-2012: FPS

2012+: TPS downloadable game

Money Wasted: Probably nearing $50+ million given how big of a studio Marin is and how long this has been going.

Intrigue remains. I actually quite liked the look of the FPS version, so we'll see how this one turns out. At this point, we're getting our cake and eating it too, so I figure this oddball shouldn't garner continued derision...this is utterly curious.

With Firaxis clutching out what appears to be a fantastic game in Enemy Unknown the constant state of this businessman induced IP grab is hilarious.

The fuck? I was actually looking forward to the original version of this game, with the 60s FPS setting and really weird aliens. Gave off more of an eerie alien horror feel. This doesn't seem interesting at all. I know a ton of people were annoyed about the XCOM reboot, but I actually thought it looked really cool.

Once the real game was announced this is how I felt. Sad to see.

Why? We (I can't speak for everyone of course) wanted a game that was a true successor to the original. We got it. And then some. They now can go and do side stuff if they want.

It's the same way I thought about Dragon Age. You feel the universe is great but want to go for more action and broader appeal? Cool. As long as the flagship aims to keep trying to follow BG's legacy feel free to go around making as many side stuff as you want.

Ugh so sad to see this spiral in to obscurity. I was looking forward to a unique atmosphere with horror settings, similar to what the first Bioshock accomplished. Now its just another generic third person shooter that will be in the bargain bins shortly.

Now people are pretending they wanted the FPS... c'mon. The only good thing it had going for it (maybe) was the designs of some of the aliens and probably the setting. Everything else felt like an abuse of the name and your generic shooter cover mechanics.

The only real XCOM everybody wanted is coming out in a week. That said, yea, looks like they have no idea what to do with this, and looks kinda worse than before.

I, for one, was really interested in the FPS...shame...

You realize people who dislike something will always speak louder than those who appreciate something. Most people I know who were interested in this don't even know what neogaf is or care about discussing videogames on forums.

And you realize I am speaking about GAF, right?

Well, I think the logic makes some sense (even if this is a generalization).

Once gamers got what they originally wanted (a real XCOM), they were fine with this game's existence.

But this could be for all intensive purposes different groups of people speaking out.

Yup, this is how I feel as well. I have proper game and the IP will live on, they can try and make it more original. Now this will be crap for sure. Hilarious.

Yeah, they went from "disappointing but cautiously interesting" to "disappointing".

Now people are pretending they wanted the FPS...

There's a difference between being interested in something and liking it.

Pretty smart guys at 2k.

First announce an xcom game that looks terrible

Backlash.

Then get your premier studio in Firaxis to make an actual factual xcom game.

Everyone loves it.

Them push out whats left of the original whenever.

The original was just a PR move to pave the ground for a grand reception ot a true xcom game!

Although the gears of warification of the males in it is kinda lame, but whatever.

What a huge cash dump this has been. I actually liked both FPS incarnations they showed, especially after they announced Enemy Unknown. Could have been a good spinoff/complimentary game.

I wonder if they walked into development problems or just couldn't figure out a way to make it nore like classic XCOM.

If you think that the Firaxis XCOM was made in between the time that the 2K Marin XCOM was shown, then you have absolutely no idea how long it takes to make things.

No, thats what im saying, the firaxis one was in dev, but they were worried about the 'franchise legacy' so first they shat on it, so that whatever came next in slightly normal xcom form would be seen as the second coming!

The orignal 2k marin xcom was always just a publicitiy stunt to make the real xcom get more acclaim!

yeah, trying to save what they can and have SOMETHING out considering the amount of money that went into this already.

Damn, I was really looking forward to it. I loved the style. Looks like a pretty big downgrade now.

Why would they make the FPS XCOM in the first place then?

You don't make something as expensive and time-consuming as video games in order to troll in real life, no matter what people say.

They will easily make their money back and more on the real game!

They are both real games.

maaan, if only people didn't have such kneejerk reaction when they revealed it :(

it wasn't just another fps, it was a tactical shooter, with unique artstyle, enemies, weapons, and settings.

:(

I'm very curious to see why they'd change it to third person. Seems like a pretty drastic change to make mid development and I don't see any apparent reason for it from what they've shown.

They got me there, colour me interested.

Wow, what a mess this development has seemed like. I always liked the concept of having a bit of research and picking missions in an FPS, but all the shooting I ever saw in videos looked boring. If this is true and they can at least make something worthwhile out of the concept I won't mind the changes. Not now with an actual XCOM game coming.

E3 2010: XCOM announced. Fans of the original enraged. Game looks mediocre as hell anyway.

E3 2011: XCOM redesigned: Now it plays like Mass Effect in first person. Better, worse? People shrug.

January 2012: XCOM:EU announced. XCOM is now known as "that fps xcom game". Or it would be if, again, anyone cared.

Octuber 2012: XCOM is now Mass Effect in the 60's. Suddenly both sad and funny.

I want to say that maybe I would have cared about this game if it had been a new IP because I like the idea of hunting aliens in the sixties... but it never looked like a good game.

Nothing of value was lost, other than time and money. Which I guess are valuable. Huh.
