Rumor: Revamping new guide button and snap mode for the XB1.

Need a revamp for everything. Cluttered mess and why do Gold members need to suffer with all the shit ads.

The problem with pip is that it will be practically for videos only. Unless the app can show regular ui as a flyout as well (which could be cool actually)

For the guide button, I think I would prefer: Single press: Guide; double press invoking pip and instant switch focus between main and pipped app. Long press: Shut down menu and finally single press with the guide open to go to the dash.

I use snap mode allot for television when football is on. So im glad that instead of removing it out right, they moving over to a picture in picture mode. That could actually be better for game playing. Snapping most apps is useless unless its a constant video feed like television.

The double press thing is so silly.

If anything it should have been one press to bring up the guide, and a second button press to return home (just like the 360)

Id use the double press to launch PiP, or swap the main and PiP apps.

These improvements sound good. PiP with the ability to minimize, and quickly swap app positions would be great.
Or hold the PiP style former back button like we do on the DS4 share menu?

Instead, Xbox looks to be exploring the possibility of a picture-in-picture multitasking implementation, where "snapped" app would simply hover in the corner of your game, rather than wiping out a quarter of your screen with a largely empty bar.

This is what it should have been from the beginning for media apps. Using a big ugly sidebar and reducing the size of the gameplay window was madness for just watching a small YouTube window or something. Microsoft lost my interest in the console even more so with poor decisions like this on the run up to launch.

Snap is amazing in certain situations. Had some friends over on election night and we played Diablo and Gears of War 4 with the TV snapped to the side so we could watch updates as they happened. Everyone was pretty wowed and amazed it was possible. I think a lot of people haven't even tried it.

It's implemented this way because it covers more than just video apps and even still they can't account for every game's UI by having a PIP mode. It's bound to cover up pertinent information on a bunch of games.

I'm just a bit grouchy because I feel MS since their obsession with Metro in Windows 8 are continuing to try and beat a dead horse by not admitting the design sucks balls.

XB1 has shit everywhere and still like they're trying to sneak into Windows 10 has ads upfront and in your face.

It's annoying because there are many great touches in the XB1 UI. It's just usual MS, as if 10 different UI teams work on individual parts of the interface and some intern has to then glue all the parts together.

I find the official feedback forums a farce, despite being polite with my feedback, you have these Xbox Ambassadors telling you "go get a PS4 then" and shit like that.

I stopped doing it, it felt like a waste of time. A guy did a nice vid for an idea for themes/animated backgrounds and was told "who cares" "no one would use that" "I don't care" "it would slow the ui down". Now if something like that did slow the UI down, surely that's on the team working on it? We had this stuff on PS3 and phones but oh no it's out of the question to have it on Xbox One. A joke.

About fucking time! I was pretty damn annoyed when they deleted my suggestion for a single press for guide and press and hold for dashboard got deleted from their insiders suggestion page. I've hated bringing up the guide since day one of owning the system.

Snap has also sucked so I'm hoping this PiP idea is quicker and a better fit for controllers.

They need to work on sharing. It's atrocious compared to PS4.

Yup. It's pathetic how cumbersome and behind they are with capturing photos and video.

So how is a twitch snappper like myself suppossed to use PIP while broadcasting? Wouldn't some part of the game screen get totally covered as appossed to the whole game screen shrunk a tad bit? I prefer the latter myself. I love the snap cuz I dont have to look over to a laptop to see the text chat. Its right there on the screen.

FYI- I snap TV ALOT!!!

I hope MS realizes how important nailing this is for Scorpio. Even though it's not necessarily related to hardware performance, a slow OS leaves a horrible first impression. Thing can do 4k60 if I turn it on for the first time and every single thing still takes a second or two to open I'll be disappointed.

It can get a bit mental. I mean do people not remember how the PSN store used to be? Or the clock on the PS3? Sometimes your favourite company makes questionable decisions and it's up to all sorts of feedback to try and nudge companies in certain ways. Criticising the XB1 UI has nothing to do with the games, it's simply about feedback on a UI. Not everyone is going to like a UI, as it is a very opinionated piece of design. Unless we are of course talking about removing the start menu from Windows. That required some insane effort from people to defend.

The ideal solution would be for them to introduce a UWP API for overlays, giving apps a simple, supported way to display arbitrary UI that could hover over everything else. That would allow for PiP for media apps, plus also stuff like tracking achievements, etc

Would be useful on PC as well, if they want stuff like Discord to ever consider moving over to UWP.

Although I think there's still a place for a snap-style implementation for scenarios like Twitch broadcasting, where you may want some significant UI in addition to the game (for chat, etc, without covering up a quarter of your game screen).

End of the day it's not a big deal by any means but I do find it slightly disheartening to see so much nonesense spouted from supposed fans at people who just want to give ideas or feedback. Admittedly I'm not a fan of Mike Ybarra/team decisions some of the time but it seems being courteous gets you nowhere either. Well from my experience anyway.

Sounds good but please make the PiP fully fleshed out. I don't want to see some half baked implementation of it if they remove snap. Proper resizing with custom sizes, proper moving and snapping to edges, locking the window, etc!

There are examples where resizing is better than PiP. rather than boxing snap all together, I'd like them to provide easily accessible options.

This is excellent news. The double-tap + slide out is awful and I refuse to use Snap because it makes no sense. Both if these things need to go

Xbox One OS already cluttered with so much useless junk. I have to navigate beyond so much social media styled sharing or marketing their services like Groove or Music and TV when all I need is quick apps, my games, achievements and friends, and the game store to add codes, download add ons etc.

Once Beam rolls out to Xbox Twitch is probably going to be removed.

Then they will just add a sharing menu to the guide where we can start the broadcast with one button press and maybe do some settings (include Kinect picture, position, Headset Audio on/off, ...)

Sounds good, the BoneUI has much room to improve. Hopefully on Scorpio it has more dedicated CPU time too for max snapiness!

The UI lag has ZERO to do with the CPU. THE OS will continue to run like shit on Scorpio if they continue to force the UII to rely almost solely on your ping to their servers.

PSA: Scorpio will not improve the UI performance.

Snap is a cool feature in principal but not in practise. Losing so much of the screen to the secondary app means I hardly ever use it.

PiP would fucking rock though! Hope these rumours are true.

Everything you mentioned is 1 to 3 button presses away.

I can't hear the argument of a "cluttered mess" anymore.

I wouldn´t go this far.

The lag when scrolling in "My games & apps" is certainly only a CPU issue and so are many other things.

But I agree, some parts which are streamed directly from the net will not be faster.

Zero. Wow, the more you learn! /s

But yes, they need to be less reliant on pulling things down from the net too. Although I would have thought the 2GB+ of RAM it already has should be more than enough for that. With some clever use of caching and pre-fetching.

Anyway the whole thing needs better optimisation, thoughtful layout and operation.

"Microsoft has also been testing a single button press to access the Guide menu, as opposed to the double-tap implementation available today."

Finally..

Single press would be welcomed, I find the current pop out menu to be superior to anything 360 did (much much faster) so this would be a nice change to really drill home how much better the new menu is.

Regardibg snap. If they remove it altogether, doesn't that mean a bunch of memory frees up too? If I remember correctly a chunk of memory was reserved for snap even if it's not being used.
