This is something I will never understand. Ratios are very vague. Out of 20000 gaming apps, if 1000 is gold I really don't see the problem...the other problem is pure preference which doesnt mean a lot...

The problem is that the ratio makes it very hard to find great games when you have to dig through so much shit games. The buttons thing is a preference, but there are only a few gametypes that lend themselves to a buttonless control type...

If true I'm all over this. As long as it's not.... 599 US dollars.
I seriously doubt it'll be cheap. Think high-end smartphone pricing IMO. It will need a carrier subsidy, and if I was Sony, I'd dangle this carrot in front of Sprint or T-Mobile, because AT&T is Apple's turf.

It's funny that $500 was considered too high for a PS3, but smartphones regularly cost that much without a contract. My Evo was $450, and that actually seemed like a good price for such a fancy phone. I'd expect a 1GHz Snapdragon PSPhone to cost $400 or so, but it depends on what else they throw in. I mean, they have an 8MP cam in the X10, but this one might be 5MP. They can then offer multiple SKUs with a premium PSPhone that has all the high-end features on it. PEACE.

I've never owned a PSP but I would definitely consider this. I can't imagine battery life is going to be all that good though. Most smartphones barely last a day of decent use. Toss an hour of gaming in with that and you'll be charging a couple of times a day, surely. Having an open OS like Android coupled with a decent console gaming platform almost seems to good to be true. Day 1 if battery life is good and OS functions aren't hampered.

Edit:

Oh, and:

It seems that Sony Ericsson -- a company that has yet to even introduce an Android 2.0 device
Doesn't the X10 already have 2.2? Or is close to getting it?

BUAHAHAHAHAHA!!! :lol

Sorry, but SE's software support has been a running joke for years. I had to rely on TopSony, a spanish-language site to hack my Walkman phone. Good hardware, but shit software support. So if it's stock Android, then firmware updates are in Google's hands...for the most part. The problem with the X10 is SE's skin means they have to handle the firmware updates. The phone is still on 1.6. Other phones have gone through 2.0, 2.1 and are on 2.2 now. PEACE.

No dual analog? Instead now we have no analog at all?

Way to give opposite or what we wanted. Hopefully Sony ins't looking into another phone that only play Android and PSMini games.

i think X10 phones are getting android 2.1 this fall, not 2.2.
It would be a great platform for emulators, and old school gaming and arcade/16bit ports , just having a pad and buttons makes the difference. Still hope for analog nubs though.

Is Snapdragon that bad? How can a 1Ghz 2010 CPU be worst than psp's 2006 hardware?

This may be a necessary step, hopefully better executed than pspgo, to check the market before a proper psp2 is released.

Good point. I bought my phone for $20 (new) so I don't think much about the high-end market. :lol But I would love something like this.

Pretty predictable that the people who said this would never happen, are now reverting to "lol, this will be a catastrophe." Just admit you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

It'd be pretty embarrassing to use this in public, maybe from a distance it would look like you're texting but still.

Maybe if they released a dock for it and allowed a playstation controller to connect via bluetooth I could see myself using it at home, as I do with all portable gaming.

2006 is generous. The PSP was first launched in 2004. They're probably only giving this thing limited horse power so that it doesn't drain the battery in a minute.

Are you embarrassed to play a ds in public?

Unless you're playing games like Criminal Girls, how is gaming embarassing?

Anyways, considering most phones have blue tooth connectivity, and that the PSP Go (of which this phone takes its design from) already can link with a Dual Shock 3, your request will likely happen. Although I'm a bit unsure of how that'll work with any touch screen games, or if the phone itself will have any video output like the Go has.

:lol yes (although I don't own one.)

Not only embarrassment but I can't focus on the game in public the same way I can at home.

I'm more of a portable music person.

Odd, i'd play a portable in public, hell I play a dsi XL at work sometimes, who gives a fuck.

Especially if you're already getting laid

I've repeatedly stated that the next PSP wouldn't be a standalone handheld but a minimum phone spec coupled with a non-phone (WiFi-only) version of the device. We'll see how these rumours pan out when Sony make a definitive statement about the future of the brand one way or another.

Also, to all the people complaining about the lack of dual analogs:

Touchscreens >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> analog sticks

They're much more precise and less prone to breaking over time.

I'd have much preferred the 3DS slide pad to have been a second touchpad of some sort, but I doubt the ergonomics of it and size and the type of lower screen would have allowed it (because it needs to display graphics, the lower screen must be recessed and can't be just a part of the surface - cost is also a factor, I suppose). There's also the issue that the type of screen they're using can't detect two simultaneous inputs, so they'd need to be two separate surfaces.

Sony are apparently using a different kind of touchpad, so the same issues wouldn't be inherent, though I'm not familiar with what sort of setup they might use.

What plans?

Day One.

But arent they limiting there audience?

What would marcus do? Parents are not going to buy there kids phone just to play games.

Or is there PSP2 still on the horizon?

I'm hoping this is a "with playstation" kind of deal to broaden their footprint. There still needs to be a psp2 super phone and stand-alone wifi unit. If this isn't an early step towards a more powerful successor that is soon to follow, I don't really see this faring that well.

The iPod Touch isn't a phone.

If they do this, I'm sure they'd also sell a non-phone version of the spec.

This could be interesting, but without dual analog and hopefully R1, L1 buttons I do not see it having the potential it could have. I know form factor is an issue, but all of those things are what it would require for me personally to be interested in another handheld gaming device.

Good point :D

I have been waiting to update my phone. This might just be it.

Honestly this could technically be the PSP2 if they go with the Wii hardware approach: A suped up PSP with phone, expanded memory, touch screen functions and a faster processor.

What is a Wii but a suped up gamecube with a waggle interface?

This would be the same concept.

If its just PSP plus or PSP2, I don't care. I'm highly interested in this.

not with a 1ghz snapdragon though, it seems. That may barely even reach the specs required for 3.0, if certain rumors are true.

Apple's? Game Center, which is supposed to be the next level in mobile gaming. Achievements, friends lists, etc., which are all included in this.
I remember now.

So essentially SONY's master plan is to pull developers and publishers from the successor of the most successful piece of gaming hardware of all-time, by offering a phone that is part of a mobile OS, that contains razor sharp competition within its space, in which the phone they are creating would only have a fraction of the total marketshare of that particular OS it's based on and even a smaller fraction of the entire mobile OS market; in which all of this is following a predecessor that is currently all but dead and has serverly burnt many of their publisher ties...

Hopefully you can see where I'm going with this?

They'd have no other choice but to.

Slap an Android OS icon on the XMB (or vice versa), stick an antenna & phone mic/speaker in a PSPgo shell and I'm there day 1. I want a PSP, I want a smartphone, and I don't want to carry around a pile of devices in my pocket.

I don't really get why so many people are being really critical of this, it's a solid idea that should have happened a long time ago. No sense thinking about old paradigm stuff like whether this is PSP2 or whatever, the future is in iterative devices that evolve over time, not starting from zero with your market every time.

Before we get overly negative, could we talk about how credible this rumour is?

Engadget seem pretty comfortable running this, but can a Snapdragon processor run PSP games? I mean, there's no way it's close to being fast enough to emulate right? So the games would need to be 're-programmed'?

So if - and this is a big if - this is true, it means that it would be a whole new platform for Android-based phones, not simpy a PSP phone right?

Is Engadget reliable for rumours?

This seems so horrible. I guess they are trying to team up with Google to take on Apple... So basically it's a PSP x Android Phone with no Analog nub :lol :lol .

If they're smart they'll license the ability for other Android phones to be able to tap into their Playstation store.

Sony ecrisson won't do that. Why give htc, motorola and samsung something that get people to buy android Sony ecrisson phones.

Those rumours were pretty much shot down though....

They were silly anyway. It wouldn't have been a very smart thing to do...

Thank goodness! Though with Sony Ericsson they could still be liable to release a monster in one territory, and then wait till after it's no longer a monster to release it every where else.

Ah well.. let's see what TGS has on any of this.

Not likely. The N1 is a fast phone, and a great new baseline. Even then, G1 is still supported from what I understand. The N1 should be supported through 2012, since it's the official Google phone. PEACE.

This sounds like the same thing as the Sony Ericsson "Bravias" and "Walkmans". They're not the official thing (quite obviously in the case of the Bravia), SE is just borrowing the names from their sister companies to make their phones sound flashier. Expect those "Playstation" games to come from SOE and third party mobile divisions.

I think you're missing the part where Sony wants people to actually buy their hardware.
