Rumor Square Enix has the PS5 Pro dev kit

I saw someone else on Reset mention that the rumor of devs getting PS5 Pro devkits so far are among 1P, so Square-Enix having one would be the first known 3P with them.

But my question is, how long have they had it? Because if it's been for a while, and they would be considered in the initial round of companies with them, and the only others being Sony's 1P teams....well that is an "interesting" correlation potentially, wouldn't you say? 😉.

Not in terms of anything BTS that's transpired but, perhaps of something in the future that might. But in the meantime, yes I would figure Sony want to get these devkits out to very close 3P partners who are working on PS5 exclusives, Square-Enix one of the most chief among them.

FF7R on Switch 2?

I call it fake

It'll be four years from its initial release once Switch 2 launches, and Square-Enix have never completely abandoned Nintendo outside of the N64. Gamecube, DS, 3DS, Switch...they've always had presence on Nintendo platforms and arguably more than on Microsoft's.

That'll continue well into the future too, and in the case Sony ever is actually looking to acquire Square-Enix in the near future, they'd see Nintendo as less of a direct competitor than Xbox,. They wouldn't have an issue with various games being Day 1 there, or games that would be initially exclusive to PlayStation systems getting tuned and ported to weaker Nintendo systems a few years later.

Hell, maybe that's why the PlayStation Portal is the way it is 🤷‍♂️

And it means Switch 2 with PS5 graphics is real

I doubt it'll be able to hit PS5-level graphics if it's connected to a large-screen TV, plus I doubt Switch 2 will have storage I/O on the level of PS5 or even Xbox Series systems.

However with some DLSS 2.0/3.0 implementation combined with the size of the handheld's screen (being much smaller than a television, decent resolution, would naturally help with image quality on the system itself), I guess it'd give the impression of being comparable to that game running on a PS5 in terms of visual quality.

Why wouldn't that be a believable thing? From a technical point of view the FF7 Remake on PS5 is one of the least PS4 improved ports out there, basically the PS4 version with increased resolution, framerate and slightly improved textures. Oh, and Steam Deck runs FF7R Integrade just fine by the way, and the leaker specifically said that it looks close to FF7R on PS5, and not that it will be identical to it. That said, having FF7 Remake as a Switch 2 launch title makes perfect sense for Square so I'm sure they'll do everything in their power to make that happen.

Also: Square-Enix want those Nintendo sales. Nintendo is a titan in the Japanese market; if they want to re-establish Final Fantasy's chart dominance in Japan assuredly, they would want to get ports of the games onto Nintendo's platform.

Thankfully, the PlayStation Portable might actually be more of a help for stimulating PS5 software sales (physical-wise) in Japan than I gave it credit for, if the way it functions is as I've recently come to learn of. Being able to ad-hoc your PS5 at home as a remote server on any wifi network you have permissions/access to, is actually a really neat idea and makes the Portal more palatable to the lifestyle of most Japanese businesspeople and students. I'm assuming PS Link alongside Remote Play improvements will help foster things.

It's actually gotten me to turn around some of my early pessimism on the device. Though, a PS4 Portable would've still been nice to have, and the Portal should still be able to stream PS+ Premium Classic games if the person has access to them and owns a version of them on their system (particularly for PS3 titles, since you can't even play those locally on the PS5 natively yet).

Of course they do. They are in bed together. Japanese console, Japanese developer.

Get that propaganda outta here!

I hope they push 600p 60 fps on ps5 pro
so ps5 at 300p 60 fps or 600p 30 fps

and of course, the real reason ps5 pro will be invented for: 1200p 30 fps

With the internal nvidia leak the SOC os close to PS4 pro Performance while docked
Let's say they use DLSS it can easly achieve PS5 level of games at 1080p, upscaled from 480p
But it needs SSD storage if it wants to keep up with current gen games

I'm still doubtful if Switch 2 will hit PS4 Pro levels when docked unless the dock has actual processing power and cooling built into it this time. Either that or the processing power is in the Switch 2 itself, but downclocked significantly when not in docked mode.

Having it split between the Switch 2 and dock, though, would probably work better for Nintendo in production logistics and SKU pricing. They could sell models with docks included for $399, for example, and model without a dock for $299, profit margins on both (higher profit margin likely on the SKUs without the dock). Power users would go for the models with a dock included, but majority go for the one without a dock which is okay because all Switch 2 games would target around that anyway and get extra performance with the dock.

If the portable itself has all the processing power in it then it hurts production logistics and offers less flexibility. Conceptually a Switch 2 with the setup described above would work like a laptop with an eGPU connected would work, except better connection and more aesthetically consistent. I'm pretty interested to see if Nintendo does this for Switch 2 TBH.

A couple years ago I used Remote Play app on my phone at work, using work wifi while my ps4 was on at home. Then I paired a dualshock4 to my phone and was able to play my console remotely. It was the coolest form of technology I've experienced in a while! It was somewhat laggy and the latency is always an issue for shooting games etc, but what a cool setup that was.

Is that what this new Portal is supposed to be about?

And I tried to make it even more levels of meta by trying to play PS Now streaming while I was already remotely playing, but it wouldnt let me. lol

I wonder how much of a bump it will provide over ps5. Looking forward to seeing it in action. If its lik 18tf and a good jump in resolution and framerate I'm in.

Yep, and with much better Remote Play via PS Link. I was originally under the impression it only worked in the home because that's how so many other people were talking about their Remote Play experience, but I saw some further information and noticed how limited I was looking at it prior. Doesn't help there are some otherwise big-name people who have had similar misunderstanding of its usage and haven't seemingly corrected that or acknowledged they were wrong before.

If the remote experience is up to par with the new improved tech, I do think for PS5 owners travelling about, or just staying at home, PS Portal does actually make a really nice accessory. Still think the form factor could be a tad more appealing, but it's the function that really matters.

Nice. Yea Im a few years behind emeging tech. Im actually more interested something like the GPD win mini. But as someone who plays PS exclusively, I agree the Portal looks unappealing. Same reason Im waiting for the PS5 slim: havent needed the new console yet and its too big and silly to have on display. Slimmer down now!

Tbh, the number 1 thing I'm curious about is how the general public will react to the pro announcement. It just doesn't feel as "welcome" as last time.

FF7R on Switch 2?

I call it fake

Seems like one of the safest calls you could make
Square loves putting whatever game they can on Nintendo console.
Nintendo is always a little stronger than last gen.
PS4 can run FF7R therefore Switch 2 will too.

"Developers are bad at optimization, please buy more powerful hardware to brute-force the performance to what you should be getting"
I really don't think that's a good sales pitch
Sounds like Nvidia and AMD's entire GPU sales model.

This was my first thought. What is the point of a "Pro" system when our games are quite literally PS4 games running at a higher resolution?
I agree it is not that much needed but more and more games are not running that well. FFXVI for exemple the frame rate mode is quite bad and I had to play it quality mode but then I was in 30fps... I'd like a 4K60 version of that game. And others.

This is quite the same scenario than we had with the PS4 and PS4 Pro. Games were still running well on PS4, we didn't feel any "omg when is the next hardware coming ? it becomes urgent" feel but they still made a Pro. And we bought it so...

If Switch 2 can even create the illusion it's pulling like a PS5, how do you compete with that? Just shamelessly make your own copy of the hybrid idea?

I just can't see any scenario where that doesn't snowball into an unstoppable beast. If 3rd party devs were bending over backwards to put games like Doom and Witcher on potato Switch. This is like end times.

Where is the damned Tactics remake/remaster that's been making the rumor rounds?
Good question, I worry that the soft sales of Tactics Ogre and Diofield Chronicle have soured their optimism on strategy RPGs and they cancelled it. I think if we don't get an announcement this year, it's for sure dead.

Also on topic: I would hope they'll patch FF16 on PS5 Pro to run at least at a 1440p-1080p DRS range at a locked 60fps.

Just market it as PS5 Brute Force. It's got a nice ring to it, and they wont have to weasel any justification for its purpose when pressed by the media. "We didnt name it the PS5 Pro.. what were you expecting?" Maybe they could add a beefier casing to the console, lots of angles and bulges. Make the fan even louder than PS4s jet engine.

You're not getting the new Playstation Brute Force?? What are you, a sissy!?

Even just PS5 Brute sounds pretty cool.

No way switch 2 has ps5 graphics. I suspect PS4 but with modern add ons, maybe some hardware on board with AI or raytracing but that's it.

If square puts ffvii r on the switch 2 I suspect PS4 graphics. 1080p at best and 30 fps.

With PC based consoles and superior GPU's from AMD, does this really mean what it once did? Especially if your already across the PS5 specifics and special features? Seems like companies could do a lot of the hard work without a dev kit, even with the current PS5 dev kit or over powered PC. Obviously they would have to make some updates and account for system quirks.

X-3 strikes me as a sequel not really needed and coming far too late, imo. If they really are going ahead with a third entry.

And remaking X? Why? The original holds up so well and runs great on the PS4 HD Collection of X/X2.

Hearing about VIIRebirth, IX Remake, X/X-3, Tactics..

Makes me wonder why Square-Enix seemingly *hates* Final Fantasy VIII, a game that could really benefit from a larger scale remake.

Maybe I don't know, they could also use
"PS5 Pro
Delivering on the promises made before"

Nah that won't work either 🤔
"PS5 Pro
Delivering Next Gen gaming....not just cross gen games"

Nope that's not it.
"PS5 Pro
55fps to 60fps in cross gen games for just $600"

Yeah I got nothing 😔
You gotta be all like
PS5 PRO! WITH XTRA BIG ASS GRAPHICS!

What a fucking glorious time it will be for Japanese games with Switch 2 and PS5 Pro. No need to even look at the absolute shit that america west pumps out with their sweet baby writings anymore soon!
