Rumour: Nintendo aiming for Zelda BotW release on June 16 (EUR), Switch release first

June? I'd be genuinely surprised if that ends up happening... Time to start saving up whatever cash I can, I want a Switch themed BOTW bundle :3

Ha ha well that sure did backfire on him.

This is me in a nutshell since Nintendo hasn't made the Switch a compelling product for me yet. Forcing me to buy Zelda on the Switch will not do that it will just make me skip the thing altogether.

"Forcing you" now unless Nintendo has sent the Ninja to kidnap you family and is holding them hostage till you buy a Switch they are not forcing you to do anything.

I brought the GameCube in 2005 and I didn't mind waiting a week to get Twilight Princess despite the Wii releasing the following year.

I later went on to buy the Wii in 2008 so I had a good 3 years with my GameCube and not once did I feel like that force to buy the Wii just to play Twilight Princess.

Not surprised to see this at all.

No one cares if Ms or Sony does this sort of thing, or gets a third party exclusive or something

But if Nintendo delays a last gen Zelda, or funds Bayonetta 2 it's nothing but outrage and port begging and boycott bullshit

Already getting prepared for the bloodbath Beyond Good and Evil 2 thread will be if the rumors of them publishing/funding it are true. Because Nintendo isn't allowed to do the sort of things that everyone cheers on Ms and Sony for to promote their own platforms

The only reason I can see them releasing the Switch version before the Wii U version would be that the Switch version is significantly gimped compared to the Wii U version, but they don't want people to know that because they want to move those Switches, and if you released them on the same day and the Wii U version was the better version, then no one is going to buy a Switch to play it. That's the only possible reason I can come up with. I mean the game is already running on Wii U. People have played parts of it.

That's seriously the ONLY reason you can think of?

This is certainly an interesting conclusion to draw.

What about it would even be gimped?

It's pretty clear they are releasing it on Switch first so that die hard fans will have to get a Switch, if they don't already have one, to play it early

That's seriously the ONLY reason you can think of?

Why else would you release them that close together, but not on the same date? If the Switch version is as good or better, people will buy a Switch to play it, but if they came out on the same day and the Switch version was not quite as good, that would probably cost them a lot of Switch sales at the end of the day. Maybe that wouldn't be the ONLY reason, but I can't think of any bigger reason to do this.

Leaks are saying the Switch version runs significantly better.

Other way around.

They want to push the prettiest version of the game first. It'll be the one that gets the most media attention. If they pushed the Wii U version first, people might think the Switch version is also just as dated-looking and jaggy. First impressions are everything.

What they are doing makes sense from a business perspective. As long as they don't cancel the Wii U version, I'm not gonna get upset about the week delay. Not that I think others are wrong for feeling upset, though. They have every right to be. I'm just used to playing games years after they were originally popular, so a week for me is nothing.

I have a feeling the WiiU version will be less optimized with more pop-up and framerate problems. The Switch version will be the main version for reviews and media purposes.

So why was Twilight Princess delayed in the game cube? Because the wii version was gimped?

Imo it's clearly a ploy to get wii u owners to say "fuck it I'll buy a switch" just to play it early. No conspiracy theory.

I hope the Aonuma-less team give their best. I wouldn't mind dialing the graphics back even, or a black second screen. :|

Gamecube version was superior, imo, but yeah, that doesn't really add up I guess.

That's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but Technically it wasn't. Wii version had better visuals and widescreen. No gimpage then, so no reason to think their be gimping now.

Whoa, technically with a capital T. Thrown down!

Need those better visuals to capture the true essence of fifty shades of grey. Thank you sir, may I have another?

Blame my phone. Meant nothing by the capital T. No need to get so arsey bud :/

Widescreen and component support make it the better version technically.

I might be wrong about the dates but I'm pretty sure the gap between Wii and Cube versions was about six weeks.

Asking the gaming audience to wait even a week to get a new game is usually like pulling teeth. Preorders got popular for just that reason (incentives only helped that along).

So how many people who are perfectly happy with this decision are buying the game for the Wii U?

Me. Nobody who's been waiting 3 years for this game is actually going to not buy it because of a week's difference in release date. Like, self-defeating behaviour that absolute over something so insignificant would probably be indicative of mental illness.

The Switch is more tablet sized than the usual handheld sized, that's quite a physical difference. 3DS can still fit in pockets easily.

I know you're just trolling, but I see this argument often and it is the dumbest.

I mean the absolute dumbest.

Then why should anyone take them seriously if they're gonna be hypocritical? Why is it okay that 360 owners have to wait a short bit for a hyped up game while Nintendo gets blasted for
maybe
doing a similar thing to Wii U owners?

This is the single best post in this entire thread, and it shows the sheer hypocrisy some have in holding Nintendo to some sort of standard that other companies, arguably bigger companies, aren't being held to and in fact, are praised for similar decisions.

It's been this way with Nintendo forever too. So many people hold them to some sort of impossible standard and ignore that was is happening with X has happened with other companies before and they never got blasted nearly as much. It's almost as if people are just looking for reasons to be pissed at Nintendo.

The game is maybe coming in June. It's maybe releasing on the Switch first, one week ahead of time. The reasoning is obviously to push Switch sales. Reading into it as "performs worse on Switch" or "why only a week", or "god they are screwing people" is just asinine. The Wii U flopped. It's likely the same people that were upset BoTW is coming to the Switch at all, or the handful of Wii U owners pissed that Wii U's best games are being brought to Switch with upgrades.

It's entitlement getting the best of them. Nintendo is a business, one where their flagship console absolutely tanked. It's so obvious as to why these decisions are made for the betterment of the Switch that people literally pulling excuses and reasons to be upset out of their arse are living in the same denial Nintendo was the entire first year the Wii U was on the market.

I bet they're all playing video games!

I'd love to hear how buying a used video game is self defeating, typically it saves the consumer money.

If the Wii U flopped so bad, if the rumors are true about the staggered release, why does Nintendo think a Wii U release of BotW on the same day as the Switch version will cannibalize Switch hardware sales?

If the Wii U flopped so bad, if the rumors are true about the staggered release, why does Nintendo think a Wii U release of BotW on the same day as the Switch version will cannibalize Switch hardware sales?

Because Zelda itself is not traditionally a system seller. The Wii didn't explode because of TP, it exploded because of Wii Sports, just as a recent example.

However, Zelda does something that a Wii Sports doesn't - it drives Nintendo's core fanbase to a product. So say you have that core audience sitting with a Wii U, because after all that core audience is typically your most faithful audience. If it's simultaneous, that core audience now has one less reason to buy a Switch.

No Zelda title has sold more copies on a single platform than the total sales of Wii U units. Even if the audience buying Zelda will likely not be a massive representation of Switch Lifetime sales, it can help convert their current Wii U hardcore fanbase sooner rather than later.

This is all obvious by looking at history. It's all explainable. The Wii U tanked, but that doesn't mean Nintendo doesn't want those 13 million people to buy a Switch, especially given that a launch year is typically when your most faithful buy in, but not necessarily why you are overall successful.

What do you think about the rumor that a full fledged Mario title will be a day 1 Switch game, is there an overlap with the Zelda hardcore fanbase in that this demograpic would have a Switch before Zelda anyway because of Mario's release? That's another key difference, Wii did not launch with a Mario title and neither did Wii U, both came a full year later for those systems.

Also be prepared for the cacophony of Nintendo apologists for making that Wii Sports argument!

Agreed and it just gets annoying and tiring. Luckily I outgrew the fanboys war and learned not to be bothered by delays.

I might be wrong about the dates but I'm pretty sure the gap between Wii and Cube versions was about six weeks.

In the US the GameCube version was released 3 weeks later and in Europe it was a week later.

Asking the gaming audience to wait even a week to get a new game is usually like pulling teeth. Preorders got popular for just that reason (incentives only helped that along).

No offence but so what? Gamers can play other games, go outside, read a book, watch a movie, watch a movie, etc. There are plenty of things that gamers can do while waiting to for the game to be released.

Heck while waiting for Pokémon Sun and Moon to be released in Europe I opted to help US players with tips and Pokémon knowledge, I also went to work, read my Spider-Man comic, did some cooking and watched TV and before I knew it the game was released in Europe and you know what?

Now that isn't to say that I didn't complained about the released date but that was more to due with me feeling that it was unfair that the Pokémon Company was excluding Europe from the launch party despite doing a worldwide release for X and Y.

I'm glad I missed out on the Wii U. I'm really, really, really glad.

Can't wait to try out Smash and Splatoon on the Switch.

To make impatient Wii U owners by a Switch?

The Wii version of TP launched early and it wasn't gimped at all.

Please elaborate on what mental illness I might have.

I dunno, BPD? Anything involving extreme black white/all or nothing thinking. It would really require something on that level for me to believe someone would abandon a game they'd been anticipating for years simply because it hits a week later than another version. There's nothing even remotely rational in that act.

Maybe because what it represents stings more than the actual inconvenience.

Nintendo's initial plan was to use Zelda to save the Wii U, and promised Wii U purchasers its exclusivity. When zero games, from Mario Kart to Smash to 3D World, could turn the Wii U around, Nintendo realized it'd be pretty dumb to waste all these assets just so a few people who really, really, thought Nintendo wouldn't let them down wouldn't be let down.

Pretty shitty thing to do, but capitalism is capitalism. Let's see if it works for them (it will).
