Ryse: Son of Rome PC Performance thread

Better 970 performance and HUD disable is fantastic. Literally just started playing today, so I'll probably restart for the clean screenshots.

I've been waiting for the SLI profile to play, I had good performance on a 780 + G-Sync but wanted some more room to play until I played through it.

for some reason this game only uses 65% of my GPU, it is the only game that does this, so im not having any bottleneck issues, i have a GTX 770, really estrange, when i look at the sky, the only time my frame goes above 30 is when the GPU usage goes to like 90%

If you're enabling vsync without borderless fullscreen your framerate will always drop to 30 if it drops a single frame below 60.

So what is a CVar? How do I access this?

Basically, how do I disable HUD? Its not an in-game option, so does this mean there wont be any way to toggle this on/off?

EDIT: Nevermind, figured out it meant the console command.

Yay, looks so good without the HUD. Performance is noticeably better with my GTX970, too. Pretty much a steady 60fps and 1.5x supersampling.

Not the performance boost I was hoping for with my 2 760s. I could do a locked 30 at 1080 before with only occasional drops. While I get a +20 fps increase it's still not enough to lock the game at 60 or enable 1.5 supersampling at 30.

I'm really starting to think SLI's not worth it and I should just take my lumps and get a 970.

So, big improvement for me between the patch and the new SLI drivers.

3 way sli GTX 980 pre patch compared to 1 980 GTX. I haven't unlocked the framerate (with gsync on it maxes out at 144 ish) so that's likely capped. I'll run more later to see what the scaling looks like.

That's from the very start of in engine footage in the first mission, fighting across the bridge, to the flag unfurling.

Getting really disappointing performance with a 4790k and a 780ti ....

I often get drops to low 30s with no supersampling ....

Starting to think building this rig was a waste of money ...

Not surprising given how the game's vsync operates : if you can't keep a locked 60 it will drop to 30.

The game runs really well on my system but I do experience drops to 35-40 in the forest area (The King chapter). By far the most taxing level in the game.

Otherwise, vsync off I'm averaging around 50-60fps. Not bad at all but it's true that GCN cards fare better.

Yeah but that was WITHOUT vsync, it got as low as 32 fps in the second level when you're fighting with your dad.

I'm getting massive slowdowns with this game on my 970...not sure whats about but every few seconds it just slows down near 30 fps everytime something big happens or just randomly....

i'm using latest drivers and 3570k 4.4ghz...

Timeline tells me I'm a at 52%

This game is the most incredible looking thing. I'm a sucker for the period, and couldn't have asked for it to be brought to life any better way. Makes me sad Crytek ain't really even around to do a second.

Game runs at an average of a cinematic 24fps with everything maxed @1080p on an I5/HD7950.

Crytek will be around for a quite some time, just they wont be as big as they were. Basically, its quite impossible to kill Frankfurt studio for another 5-6 years, just because of CryEngine alone.

Also, go for High settings and lock game at 30fps, You wont lose much, but You will gain performance.

Getting great performance on 660 SLI.

Only thing is I get some strange random flickering on some of the warriors on their chest/shoulder areas.

Is this a known issue? Is there any fix available?

No supersampling ...
And I'm pretty sure I don't have anything special running in the background...

Oh well ... my rig was a waste of money ...

At least the game allows to lock it at 30fps ...

Try turning down a couple settings. 3570k/gtx970 is what I have. I think I have shadows turned down and I'm able to vsync it to 60fps pretty solidly.

I am playing this since yesterday and it works pretty well on single 970 gtx and 3570k.
Pretty much constant 60fps with some little drops here and there.
It's also looks really clean for 1080p game. That temporal AA that Crytek implemented here is some best AA solution I have seen (if it's not too costly,I have no idea how much it takes). It's not really blurry and there is almost no aliasing.
Overall game looks awesome.

Its almost free, thats the beauty. It cost as much as SMAA T2x in C3 probably.
Turn it off and test the framerate, You should notice really a difference.
And yes i agree, the best AA i've seen to date. Its like slightly blurrier 2xSSAA + FXAA, its amazing.

Any chance with the new drivers that I'll be able to get 30fps at 4K on a 970? Thinking I'll grab it as a graphical test for my rig, plus I think I'll actually like this game.

How far off are we from a single GPU that can run this at 4K@60? Haven't been following GPU roadmaps or rumors.

Content with my PS4 and XBox One until I can run games on my 4KTV and Occulus when that arrives.

Right now my 69502GB is holding its own.

Any word?

we need a little over triple the perf of a 1.5 ghz 980 to bring the worst case scenarios of ryse to 60 fps.

This game is weird. It runs 60 fps most of the time, but sometimes the framerate just drops. First it was just stutterings, but now on the forest level in some brief parts the framerate simply drops to 30 and stays locked for a few seconds, then it returns to 60.

Anyone else had a similar problem? I have a 970 with i5 4460 and 8GB ram. i've heard that leaving ShadowPlay open in the background fixes the stuttering problem, but it didn't work for me. I don't think it's because of the VRAM thing because other cards apparently face the same problem.

The hard drops to 30 happen because of double buffered vsync. You can eliminate those hard drops by setting it to borderless windowed mode (triple buffering).

First set your game to Windowed instead of Fullscreen, then create a file called autoexec.cfg (use notepad > save as type: "all files") in your SteamApps/common/Ryse Son of Rome folder. Put this in the file: r_fullscreenwindow 1

Make sure you restart the game and you should be good.

Ah, many thanks! It helped with the hard drops, but the occasional stuttering persists. :(

I set everything (including textures) to low and it didn't get rid of the stuttering, so it's not a VRAM issue at all. :(

Game seems awfully CPU intensive. I can't see measurements during the game, but I can hear my CPU fan going full blast, which almost never happens. And I think this is the first time I've seen a game do it.

Performance is overall good. Not sure of my framerates yet (probably 30). EVGA Precision isn't displaying for some reason (it does that on some games, haven't figured out why yet), and I haven't gone back to try FRAPS or something else. Seems pretty smooth, though. The only hiccups are when the game loads a new gameplay section, the first 30-60 seconds are choppy as hell, but then it smooths out and seems to be rock steady after that.

i7-2600K @ 3.4GHz, GTX-680, all max settings (except for supersampling). I wonder how much of the settings I could back down on and not really notice much change visually.

Does the game have a built-in screenshot tool or you guys using FRAPS or something external to do it?

reinstalled ryse and im getting lots of stuttering accompanied by drops in gpu usage that i dont remember being there before. trying to use vsync makes it worse. anybody else have this problem?

neither that nor clean reinstalling drivers completely fixed it.

If you use ingame vsync and your fps drops below 60, even to 59, you will automatically drop to 30 fps. Ryse has a shitty vsync implementation.
You could try to enable borderless fullscreen by disabling fullscreen ingame and then adding "r_FullscreenWindow=1" into system.cfg (without quotes). In combination with that use a program to limit your fps just above your monitors refresh rate.
(I use Nvidia Inspector, AMD users should probably use RadeonPro or some other program)
For example, for a 60Hz monitor limit your fps to something like 62 or 65.
Here's a link to all available console commands if you want to try them out as some might help with your problem: https://crytek.kayako.com/knowledgebase/article/View/383/164/ryse-useful-cvars-overview

the fps wasnt just dropping to 30, it was all over the place anywhere between 25 and 60 with the ingame vsync. the borderless window method was better but still not great with random hitches for no reason to the 50s. went to try nvidias adaptive vsync but everytime i tried to select the ryse profile it would auto jump back to the the top profile of the list. doesnt happen with any other profiles. had to use nvinspector to gain access to the ryse profile. adaptive vsync seems to be the best option for ryse.

Are you running at 1440p? one 980 may not be enough for a fully consistent 60 at all times, hence the weird Vsync action you saw.

Also, are you hooked up through HDMI? I am curious.
