Ryu Ga Gotoku: Zero Demo thread and impressions

To be fair, most westerners would rather play a linear shooty bang with pretty set pieces, then beat the living shit out of idiots as a brash badass entrepreneur in late 80s Japan.
That kind of generalisation does the Yakuza community no favours.

Instead we should implore them to open their eyes to the fact yakuza is violent, with super cool action scenes, both you play and ones that are amazingly rendered, and there is always something to do of mind boggling variety and depth (a rare combination).

My only worry is, subtitles turn people off. And that's one problem SEGA realistically can't get around (if they don't want to invest in subtitles, they are not going to invest in English VO). I much prefer the Japanese actors anyway. They bring so much to the performance.

Anyway sorry, I know this thread is about demo impressions.I'll be curious to see a reaction from a non-Yakuza fan checking out the demo. As fans will most likely love it (me as I said in last page, am not going to tempt myself since there is a good chance I'll never get to play the full game).

Since it's 1988, I can't wait to see how the story ties in with the eventual collapse of the economy.

I wonder if they're gonna pull off some bullshit like Tojo or some other party fucked up and caused the economy to collapse.

I'm really looking forward to how they're going to utilize the setting and real world events.

I really doubt the collapse of the economy will be part of this story.

There was a thread that attempted that, but as you can see this thread is already in its 2nd page, as I've posted before mention of this game being on PS4 can give a little more awareness for PS4 owners, who otherwise would think it is a PS3 or Wii(U) game.
It's a simple thing yes, but who else would be interested in trying this demo out other than Yakuza fans?

It's like a psychic trigger that will make one curious to give it a shot if they're willing to take a while to make a JP account on their PS4 and check out the demo.

Oh come now I'm sure many turn the subtitle options ON for every game they've played in the past and current gen. I know I do.

Yep, backed by an awesome OP video that I hope non-fans hopefully at least tried to watch: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=966950

I will find sensible ways to bump that thread from time to time :)

Yes but this is a game you can ONLY understand by reading the subtitles. I mostly have subtitles on too in English VO games but more as a 'reference' in case I can't hear clearly something someone says. This is more akin to how many people don't like subtitled foreign movies because "omg i have to read?!".

Funnily enough I've seen that as more of an 'American' thing, as I don't live in the US and having played many games over the years with JP voices, such a thing NEVER bothered me.

First off, why does SEGA lock out screenshots?

Impressions are solid. I can't read any Japanese, but after playing for an hour last night and guessing what was going on, I'm really hoping this comes to the West.

Is it me, or does the DOF actually look nice?

Yeah, I was born into having to read subtitles when watching American (and other foreign) movies and TV series so it's really a non-existent issue personally. I'd hate it if they dubbed everything that's in English to Finnish.

It is pretty nice, I think.

Yeah was annoyed I couldn't take screens or record gameplay :/

Game is gorgeous and combat is soooo good! Getting this day 1. Love what they did with the city and can't wait to return to Sotenbori!

Due to my lack of thinking, I had just discovered the 3 different fighting styles! I love how the music changes depending on the fighting style. I've been running around for the past hour playing around with the "speedy" style the most.

Majima is like Akiyama but slower and less powerful. Other than his shouts during battles "キェェェェェェ~"(`・ω回´), he is not fun to play so far.

Holy shit. I mean, just holy shit.

I played the demo for 3ish hours- after the second segment you can free roam to your heart's content before proceeding to the final cutscene. This game is everything. Kiryu's attacks are so unrefined, he feels like a young brash badass. The attacks also feel a bit slower, and more brutal from previous titles. The upgrade system is neat- having both a money component and a point requirement feels like it'll add a real sense of progression to things. The HEAT actions are flippin' awesome- to see a counter on an enemy holding a trashcan was one of the coolest things ever! GAAAAH! Money flying everywhere, fists pounding on skulls, Kiryu getting put in his place by the elder bosses, and roaming around with Nishiki- there's a real sense of insane fan service.

And I had not a single clue what was being said. But there's nothing like wandering into Shellac and getting drunk as fuck before beating the shit at anyone who decides to run into you. It's got this killer 80's vibe, that has so much color and energy. I fucking love it. The Karaoke song selections are so ace- hearing the background ad lib from Kiryu on Rouge was hilarious!

Oh. My. God. I so wish this would come over digitally to the West, I want so much more. Wowsers.

I feel the same. It is not noticeable to me but according to the in game tips, his move is getting faster when the heat is charged.

Aww are they getting cheap on the cutscenes?

Karaoke! I love this series. XD

That's cool how the music changes with the styles.

I'm drooling, this is amazing...Looks beautiful. Ishiin was great but there's a lot more to this that is impressive.

Do the right thing Sony/Sega

Digital only is good for me, i can always buy the japanese retail edition for collection if i want to.

Played the demo, despite being a crossgen game i think it looked really good, seeing a Yakuza game so nitid, crispy and smooth was awesome. Too bad the guys in the demo get knocked down so fast you cant even enjoy the combat...
Only complaint is about Kamurocho, after all these games i cant stand that place anymore.... Does the whole game take place there?

IIRC, some of it takes place in Osaka. Doesn't Goro go to Osaka for most of his story, while Kiryu stays in Tokyo for his?

Also, play Yakuza 5 if you want out of Kamuro. You go to Nagoya, Osaka, Sapporo, and Fukuoka.

EDIT: Yep.

Players will travel through the iconic Yakuza city of Kamurocho in Tokyo (pictured above) and Osaka’s Soutenbori, a city that reflects the Kansai region of Japan and is home to the Omi Alliance, a powerful yakuza group.

Majima Goro - 24-years-old. Manager of the cabaret club “Grand” in Soutenbori, Osaka.

I liked the demo, but as usual, it's cut constantly with the chatter about the plot.
I can understand that it's a slice of the actual game, but for demo purposes I would have wanted it to be a bit tighter.

I also wanted to try the kart racing and other stuff, but those were not available.

And yes, changing fight styles was nice. The slow and heavy was good and the constant supermoves felt really satistying. Bicycles bashed into faces as always ahahahahaha

Oh, and it looked surprisingly good yet in the same location. I am a bit tired of the same old same old place no matter how good it now looks. Seems like we get more but how much exactly.
Will buy anyway because it's yakuza.

I don't know man. I kind of like how I know where everything is.
Will surely buy Yakuza 5 as soon as they put it on the eu psn store, i'll admit that the new towns are one of the things i'm more excited about that game.
With Kamurocho is a love/hate thing for me... Every time i start a new Yakuza game it's like getting back home, but after the dozens of hours doing quests and missions always in those same streets i get kinda tired of it.
Probably the main reason i liked Dead Souls was seeing Kamurocho burning and destroyed XD

I can't believe how soon it comes out. Do I use my remaining JPN PSN balance to buy, or hold off and hope the game gets translated for NA? Ive been saving my balance for something special but after Ishiin its a lot of work playing a non-localized version of this series, regardless of how much I want to support it.

I love the demo...well except the forced Karaoke part, other than that I enjoyed it, hope 5 does well enough that we get a localization of Zero too.

That being said, whoever is making the OT for the import: if you don't a make the title a reference to Tough Boy, you're doing it wrong.

I may if a US release isn't a foregone conclusion.

What's the correlation to that song?

lyrics basically, I mean it's just FotNS 2nd opening, but the chorus part about living/fighting in the 80s seems like a perfect fit...to me anyways.

Something like "Tought Boys living/fighting in the 80s" is what I'm implying.

Just made a JP account and I'm downloading this. Can't wait to give it a shot. Downloading some other demo's too so I'm glad I finally made the account, even though I'm hopeless and probably won't have a clue how to navigate menu's.

Is anyone importing? Do you think there will be a translated guide? I want it so badly.

I'm considering it, but it makes the game considerably harder to stick with for me. I really hope Yakuza 5 does well enough for SEGA to partner up with Sony again and get Zero out.

But really, the game looks and plays amazing. The thing with playing a game like Zero is, the setting is very familiar for Yakuza fans so you should know what's what. With Ishiin it was harder to determine what was what without the guide.

I really wish they ditched old gen and that they expand on Kamurocho. I mean they could do other districts in Tokyo. I actually got excited when I saw some footage cause it seemed there were other districts in the game, like 3 other maps but then I realized they might just be there for the control the city with businesses mini game with Kiryu.

Would be awesome to fight in roppongi, other parts of shinjuku, shibuya, etc... Hell I'd love a Yakuza set in Kobe or Umeda part of Osaka.

I know, I'm saying I'd like them to open up other parts of the district or hell even other parts of the cities to play in, kinda like how they did with Sotenbori from 2 to 5. Just a full fictional Shinsaibashi would be rad with all the arcades and bridges.
I used to give English lessons in an Indian restaurant in the street with the giant crab in Dotonbori, seeing it in Yakuza 2 was awesome and makes me yearn for more places in Japan represented in the games.

The still/motion cutscenes are.... interesting. Not sure how I feel about them yet, seems a bit of a corner-cutter. Neat aesthetics, though.

Yea I see what you're saying, perhaps eventually it will be this way. I am curious to see what they do with Zero though. A truly open-world type experience in Yakuza would be really incredible. At least being able to travel around to different areas.

Coming straight from Yakuza 4, it feels so much better.

The animations are less robotic to. I loved It

Only thing, the guys faces dont get bloody and disfigured when I beat their asses :(
