Sakurai discusses George Lucas and fan criticism

I read the piece and found it very interesting; just responding to posts that baffled me or made me a bit confused :(.

Sorry, i may have used a very large brush, but the comments you are quoting are confusing because its very off-topic.

It seems no one actually read the piece at all. Most, if not all of the comments are very embarrassing.

I read the article too, but I admit, I chose to respond to the title instead, knowing that that's why most people were going to be here.

The real core of this article, that Sakurai (as a creator) doesn't want creators to be discouraged by criticism, is genuinely a more interesting point of discussion. Because Sakurai has famously ignored or disregarded a lot of fan criticism in favor of what he wants his games to be. I think this enabled him to make some great games, but with a lot of elephants in the room.

64 is a prototype and can be easily ignored. Melee is Raiders of the Lost Ark, Brawl is Temple of Doom, while Smash Wii U/3DS is the Last Crusade. Which probably means that the next game is Kingdom of the Crystal Skull so fuck.

hey op

Brawl. Other than that, the Smash games have generally been solid (Melee being the king, with Smash 4 in 2nd).

Brawl has a 93 on Metacritic. It's the highest rated game in the series. How is that not critically acclaimed?

Despite the tripping and the slowness, despite what Melee fans say, Brawl isn't anywhere near a bad game.

Something something all my friends played Brawl for 10 minutes and they hated it something something not competitive enough

Sakurai had a lot of interesting things to say about criticism and vocal minorities in this column but the thread title is going to ruin any interesting discussion on it.

This is the perfect thread to tell who is posting based on the title and who actually reads the article
Yup
A lot of people (including me) weren't fond of Brawl but it did receive great reviews, I suppose.

That being said I think he has a good track record outside of that. Kirby games and the other Smash games range from good to great and Kid Icarus Uprising is my favorite 3DS game so I wouldn't compare him to George just because of some missteps.

He only compared himself to Lucas because the amount of work put into their respective work, there is always heavy criticism that follows which is devoid of actual knowledge of making such franchise.

How's either of those a problem? If anything, Brawl was the equivalent of the prequels.

Brawl is pretty bad.
Guys you need to stop with the revisionist BS, majority think Brawl is not only a good game but a great game

To be fair I think he misses the point of why people complained about Cloud's inclusion. I say that as a Cloud fan who bought the DLC ASAP.

It's somewhat funny that he's included a character that advertises an upcoming PlayStation exclusive AGAIN... and people complain about Corrin!

This is all opinion. Everyone prefers a certain Smash game. Brawl isn't bad, in fact if it was released first no one would complain.

It's still regarded by a good chunk of the Smash community as the worst entry in the series. Though to be fair, there is still some fun to be had with Brawl, & it did spawn Project M.

Describe a good chunk, because 11 million people have bought brawl

Um you should read his actual article, because it is very personal and moving.

And this thread is already starting to look like the problem.

And there were people that strongly criticized that, saying “Stop adding non-Nintendo characters!” This is completely ignoring the fact that I’ve added many, many Nintendo characters to Smash. It also ignores the many fans who were overjoyed at Cloud’s addition. Looking at the big picture, I am on the receiving end of countless amounts of truly trivial statements.

I dunno who all, but I know WiiFolderJosh is this way a lot for Smash Bros. He doesn't want any 3rd party characters in Smash. Period.

It's so trivial and crapping on the people who are genuinely excited. And these were likely not easy on Sakurai's end too and it was done for the fans.

Smash Communtiy is the minority. Stop trying to pass opinions as facts.

There are so many Smash fans that any good chunk of people will agree and disagree on there favorite and least favorite Smash. There is absolutely no consensus on which is the best and worst Smash Bros.

What a shitty, click-bait thread title that is actually going to prevent a good amount of intellectual discussion on what he wrote.

I agree with Sakurai's sentiments that you can't always let the vocal minority get to content creators or else you will never feel satisfied.

That would make more sense if those were Lucas babies, but while he created and co wrote those films Spielberg directed those and it's obvious.

As for the actual article (not just the title) while I get the larger point using Lucas as a touchstone was a bad idea, when given complete control the man usually manages to turn out shit, and not just with Star Wars, and deserves all the criticism he has gotten post Star Wars .

Its an apt comparison.

Sakurai made a good game by accident (melee) and then made a bunch of trash under the same banner because he failed to realize what people liked about it in the first place.

To be honest, I've had a hard time adjusting to Smash since Melee, was great at the first two.

But these new entries are too defensive and the new "attack match up" mechanic is a bit wanky. Hit boxes are nutty as hell on some the characters and two many moves rely on the sweet spot gimmick.

What I hate most though is that it feels like grabs (not the throws but the grabs themselves) have been nerfed more than they ever had.

Online is better than in Brawl but I'm seeing all sorts if crap. I recently had a match where I used a Crash Bomb on Little Mac as he was charging his down Smash, it went through him. The match had no serious lag issues either. What the hell is going on with the DNA of this game?

How is the teir list developing for SSB4? It seems like it has characters all over the place. Is it taken as seriously as Melee?

I just realized how hard it must be to direct a Smash game nowadays.
It's like Sakurai has people screaming at both his ears and has to make a choice that would stop the most yelling.

You're complaining about hit boxes for the RECENT smash games? lol

The metagame is still developing for Smash 4, & likely will start to make more progress once Corrin & Bayonetta are released. As for how seriously Smash 4 is in the FGC, it's taken pretty seriously. However, Smash 4 is usually around Melee's ball-park (sometimes above) when it comes to entrants. Though Melee has the upper-hand when it comes to viewers.

The thread title is awful. He isn't "comparing himself to George Lucas" -- he's just empathizing with him.

I feel like Sakurai understands good direction, while Lucas is a good ideas guy who really just got lucky.

Sakurai has an authorial presence.

I know he was more comparing how he is trapped creatively by the audience, but still, he is ultimately a better game designer than Lucas is a good director.

its sort of a shame Lucas never got around to do his "experimental stuff" I hope Sakurai is able to just produce the smash games and let someone with a fresh take build on his groundwork, maybe expand the modes available. He is a very talented guy and should be able to explore his creativity.

How do you know FF7 remake isn't coming to NX?

Hit boxes in 4 are far from perfect. Instead of hitting where it looked like it didn't it has the opposite effect. I can't count the number of times Marth's sword has passed strait through an opponent without doing anything.

My opinion is kinda caught in the middle as to what Sakurai should do next. I do agree that he deserves a break either way. But as for what to do afterwards, there's two major things to consider.
  • I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Sakurai wanted to do another passion project along the lines of Kid Icarus: Uprising. However...
  • The NX Platform needs a Smash game within a timely manner. And if Sakurai pursues a passion project first, we'll either have to wait until the 2nd wave of NX hardware for another Smash game or have Smash 5 be handed off to another developer. Either scenario has the potential to not end well, especially the former (because there's a decent chance that a new director could do a great job).
I'm honestly not sure what would be the best course of action.

Far from perfect, but has the best hitboxes in the series.

I so wish we could be talking about the actual content in the article instead of this George Lucas bullshit. This week's column was very moving. Instead, this thread is going to go to hell in a hand basket all because of a shitty title.

The title is just kind of misleading. I came into the thread thinking Sakurai was confirming he was handing Smash off to someone else.
Same.

I saw someone like you in Sakurai comments/article

Yes, thread confirming Sakurai's article.
