Samsung Confirms "Galaxy X" Bendable Phone for 2018

If it actually does release next year, and it's available in the US, I will gladly hold onto my S8 until I can buy it. I could see the form factor being really useful.

This was their prototype video:

Can fold a bigger phone

I'm so excited for this particular model, but also for the other ways you could go about it. You could have this but with a Kindle-style e-ink screen or Blackberry-style keyboard and smaller screen on the front (since the inner tablet makes a large OLED front screen less necessary). Or you could make a phone that unfolds not horizontally to a square tablet, but vertically to a 21:9 screen for on-the-go movie viewing.

This is fucking cool. Hope that itÂ’s actually good in practice though, new tech like this normally takes a few years out in public to really get right.

Day 1.

Apple fans to stay in 2015 tech for the next 3 years confirmed.

I mean, just now they are getting OLED. And not even 4GB of RAM.

And you still can't expand the storage without an external device. But animated emojis?
Apple haters stay letting the everyone know that they feel like superior people because of their choice in phones. Wow.

What's the point of the second screen on the back(other than breaking/eating up more battery life)?

One handed use, no need to expand it always.

But more importantly, yes this tech is cool and has a future, but that GIF is probably 8 years or more away from being a real product guys. Theres no fucking way the first gen of these things will look that good. In the same way the first curved smartphone screened phones didnt look nearly as good as these current gen edge wrapped Galaxy S8 and Notes (and it hasn't even been 8 years since those).

It will take time to get the point that they can seriously make screens like that GIF that are visible in sunlight and durable enough to last years.

Will be cool though. I would love to try trading on an exchange during the day with a functional version of that thing.

Not really, I'm saying it from a specifications point of view.

But yeah, sure. Haters. Nevermind the other side. Fine people.

An actual innovation in smart phone tech. The last thing I thought was remotely cool was Touch ID. Will wait 10 years for Apple to invent it in an iPhone though.

not quite sure why i would want my phone to bend but i've always liked samsung hardware. i just wish they'd kill off their stupid version of Android and go full stock.

IMO there is zero chance they can release anything as sleek as that video for a very very very long time. No way something like that and that size can be done anytime soon.

And the tablet in that video... lawls.

It's gonna be funny if phones go back to being fat for a while to fit this tech. Like they'll be thin when they're folded out all the way but when you fold it back up and stick it in your pocket it's gonna plump out.

I wonder if eventually we'll get phones that are as thin as they are now, but folded, so when they're all the way unfolded they're like crazy thin. Just glass and maybe a slight bezel at the top and bottom to house the chips and maybe a magnet to keep it shut.

It's not going to be as good as in that video, no way. And anything that bends like that, would show wear in that place after a certain time. I don't see it bending as much as that video makes you believe either. I really don't believe it's going to be all positive and there will be no downsides to this tech. And the Chinese tech demos are cool, but I suppose it's being fed by an external battery.

But if it does live up to the promise, that would be an amazing step for mobile phones and similar devices.

Yeah in the Chinese demo there's one being bent over a metal rod and you can see when it flattens out that the screen is warped along the bend line :\

On every prototype the flattened 'full' display looks like warped plastic. Fuck that.

That's why I just want two thin metal slabs with zero bezels that you can fold open. None of this wonky plastic garbage.

Of course it's called the Galaxy X 😂

It's a neat idea and hopefully it comes out properly at launch. I'm hoping the tech trickles down to other Android manufacturers because while I love the idea of a courier-esque device, I despise Samsung software.
It's been called that for a while...and before apple just in case that's where you're going

What about the price?.
Probably like the iPhone 8 / iPhone X situation just more extreme since they have to fit in the Note. Unless they replace the Note with this one which I doubt.

S9 - whatever the price is right now, probably a little more expensive considering the industry trend
Note 9 - 999$
Galaxy X - 1199$?

Am I the only one that doesn't see how this is a step forward? It just seems like it's a gimmick without knowing if its viability (as far as parts not warping, etc)

It's not.

But it's new and looks futuristic so people invariably get their hopes up. People are always itching for new and disruptive tech.

IÂ’m a big Apple fan and have used their products consistently for 18 years but have to say Samsung are killing it these days. IÂ’m impressed and a little jealous honestly.

I haven't been too wowed by any new phone in years, though I appreciate the incremental advances - bigger screen, higher res, camera improvements, etc.

But this is pretty awesome. I've become really comfortable with the size of the Plus iPhones, imagine if I could unfold it and have a little mini tablet? That's huge, pun intended.

How long until they actually look like concept vids? Three to Five years? Hope they work out all the kinks, it's a fantastic idea.

Fuck IÂ’m so excited. This in addition to the incredible progress made in the SoC side of industry and you have such promise. Only thing left is the necessary evolution of batteries to power these devices.

I might be in the minority but I want to see a resurgence of the flip phone design. Imagine a 4x4 type design that can keep the display safe in the pocket, flipped once for phone functionality and flipped twice to have a full tablet.

Not really, I'm saying it from a specifications point of view.

But yeah, sure. Haters. Nevermind the other side. Fine people.

The A11 chip blows away everything on the market and it's not even close. It's so powerful it competes with 13" class laptop CPUs. So much for specs being years old. And your RAM argument makes no sense when it outperforms a device with 6GB thrown in. ?_?

Anyway, bendable OLED phones and TVs are the future I'd like to see. Bring it on, Samsung/LG.

I hate how large phones are getting. If I could get a phone that was generally small that I could unfold into a larger display I would be really happy.

We knew the name of the Galaxy X before Iphone X
