Samsung Confirms "Galaxy X" Bendable Phone for 2018

Am I the only one that doesn't see how this is a step forward? It just seems like it's a gimmick without knowing if its viability (as far as parts not warping, etc)

If it works like the gifs in this thread I think the potential is huge, I just really doubt we'll get more than a gimmicky version if it this year.

This was their prototype video:

Can fold a bigger phone

It's not.

But it's new and looks futuristic so people invariably get their hopes up. People are always itching for new and disruptive tech.

It sounds like a gimmick but its actually very useful for people who want large screens AND portability. Can't really call it a gimmick when 0 information has been revealed about the product yet and all we have is a simple prototype video from years ago. If no one took a step forward in technology, then we'd get the same boring tech every year with minimal upgrades. Samsung is doing the right thing and actually taking a huge leap to try something new.

itÂ’s gonna be cool but mostly suck for a few years, and then right when they are about to either figure it out or give up on it, Apple will swoop in and execute on it perfectly first try

the Samsung way

lets be real , im gonna get the iphone x, but iphone will never attempt a foldable phone for at least another 10 years.. and by then samsung will prob be working on a phone that can vanish

Maybe I'm missing something but what kind of potential? I'd still worry about warping + inability to keep its shape after tons of bends.

Additionally, some people ITT are acting like larger screens are somehow not portable when it's still a lot smaller than something like an iPad and can fit into pockets.
