If the EU pricing rumors prove true the price may be WAY wrong. Looks so good though.
Yeah I heard it's more expensive than the iPad :(.

Are there good comic book and PDF readers apps for android?

It looks extremely light in some of the hands on videos.

it says it weighs 380g's which is about 0.8 pounds. O_o I think my phone weighs about that weight.

O2 Germany just announced the price for it :
O2 Germany's official Twitter account informs us that the Galaxy Tab will cost the Bundesrepublik roughly €759 (about $972) in all -- a €99 ($127) deposit to start off and then €27.50 ($35) a month likely over two years.
..ughh i hope to god this isnt true.

That is seriously mental.

That's what you get by using Android though. You are unable to use the marketplace without having phone features in your device. Without the marketplace the device becomes useless, and with the phone features you are at the behest of the carriers (unless it seems, if your are an iPad).

Still doesn't really explain why it costs as much as a good laptop though.

this needs to be a wifi only device (or at least have the option) - the perfect pairing for 2.2 android phones...

Price needs to be quite a bit less than an ipad, with market access. Seriously, this thing shouldn't cost that much. I'm thinking maybe around $300 to be attractive.

This is from a Samsung fan and Galaxy S owner (Captivate). Anything like the prices they are discussing and not offering wifi only version it will be a DOA

So I see there will be an HDMI dock for it, and that it can handle 1080p.
Is there a media player for android that plays MKV?

I thought they were going to remove this?

rockplayer does, I think. Not so sure.

EDIT: Plaaty, are you sure you're using the stock player and that Samsung doesn't have its own player or something? I remember that I had a video that the stock player couldn't play, so I had to download rockplayer.

stock one probably does...

I have the Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) and the stock player does mkv fine. Samsung supplies it with mad codec support - done everything I have tried, avi/divx/xvid/h.264/mkv (I know that is a mix of codecs and containers...but you get the idea). I haven't tried 1080p (I didn't have a test file handy that would fit!), but it had zero issues with my 720p mkv files. I think this is based on the same hardware as the Galaxy S - as name would imply.

As far as I'm aware, the certification test for Marketplace access is still in place.

Also keep in mind that you can only purchase and sell Android apps in a select few countries. The full list is here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_Market

It's fairly restrictive. Much much more so than the (gasp) 'closed walled garden' App Store.

Not really as the marketplace isn't the only way to get apps.

Wow, way to relate two issues that have nothing in relation to eachother.

The Android Marketplace is currently restricted to "Smartphones" only. Hence the reason it's unavailable on the Archos tablet.

A 'persistent data connection' is a stipulation from Google for Marketplace certification. Something not really available on wifi only device, which is what some consumers obviously want in a tablet.

So even though the Samsung Galaxy Tab has Marketplace access, you cannot purchase apps in in the majority of countries, and developers are unable to sell apps in the majority of countries.

If Samsung want to beat the iPad (and obviously they do), that's an issue that needs resolving right ?

The issues being with apples closed platform and google's market problem.

developers don't need to sell through the market. thus, the platform still isn't restricted. the manufacturers actually buy the rights to use google's apps. Nothing to do with the how open android is.

No thanks. I'll wait for the HTC tab running gingerbread.

Bigger Key for me is I'm just waiting for 2nd gen tablets. This goes for android stuff and the ipad. 2010 seems like the year for 1st gen stuff which is always cool, but always lacks obvious features and shit. I'll wait it out and snag something next year.

Ugh this looks great but needs to be cheaper than an iPad for me to jump onboard. Plus I doubt there will be many Tablet centric apps developed for it. Not sure what Samsung and Google can do to rectify that.

Definitely interested if the price is right. Would be interested in giving the wife my iPad and picking up something like this, IF the price is right.

One of the UK's (worst) tabloids is saying the device will be around half the price of the iPad (£200-£300).

Well that solidify s them as one of the worst tabloids, it will be a miracle if the Tab is anything less than £500.

What would you be willing to pay?

Matter of fact, why *does* it cost so much?

Then again, the galaxy s was ~$800 unlocked, so I shoudn't be too suprised

but damn

Isn't this a Wi-Fi + 3G model only? Probably competing with the iPad 3G model.

I would pay around $450, i guess.

Unfortunately you will have to wait quite some time for a decent slate with that price tag.

It wouldn't surprise me that the price of the Tab has been inflated simply because Samsung want it to appear as worthy as the iPad. There is no hardware in the Tab that warrants that price. If the screen was either Super AMOLED or IPS then maybe.

The problem is that 16GB Wi-Fi iPad is Apple's best selling model.

DING DING DING... I know everyone is thinking phones phones phones but other non phone carrier tied shit sells well too like the wifi i-pad or the wifi kindle. Heck look at all the ipods Apple sells along with the iphones.

Problem is certain companies are making such outrageous products that they can't sell at a non subsided price.

Couldn't agree more, re: preferring a wi-fi device over a 3G/carrier enabled one. It should be treated as a computer, not a phone.

I was very close on going with this for my tablet device, but it looks like the next gen iPad it is.

Pricing fail. Nobody wants a contract on a device like this.

Apple is going to have a solid year before we see any real competition.

Love love love the iPad. Never used android before, so I got no hate for it.

I'm just excited to see a good iPad competitor coming out, it'll keep apple on their toes. THe more competition the better for the consumer. iOS or Android fans, we both win.
