Samsung Gear VR : Consumer Edition Thread: Goodbye, real world.

Oh well, just threw all caution to the wind and bought it on T-Mobile's website with overnight shipping. Better not go on back order or some bullshit!

So are Gear VR games/apps are running at 60fps? I already think it's pretty smooth, I can't wait to see what 90 or 120 (reprojected) is going to look like.

They're 60 fps iirc, though I'm not sure about low persistence. I get black smear in some things, the front menu for Dreadhalls in particular is pretty bad, thankfully not as much in game.

Just got an email from Amazon. My Gear VR is set to arrive on Tuesday. Plus they gave me a 25% discount due to the delay (had asked for it in chat). Suuuuuper stoked!! Hopefully some of you will be getting a shipping email soon too.

Amazon hands out discounts and freebies like candy, its pretty great. When my gf found a moga pro at a Target yesterday and snagged it I was able to apply my handed out free one day shipping for that order from a previous chat to a new order once I canceled, they even changed it to same day shipping which I can't say I've used before. Pretty sure the holidays are apologetic overload time for them.

Didn't think Cirque de Soleil stuff would do much for me, Kurios really blew me away. Lots of eye contact moments with the various members of the troupe, definitely good for repeat viewings cause there's so much shit going on across the 180 degree spectrum you're bound to miss things. Was eerie how easy it was for my brain to feel like I was getting my own personal show after awhile, was kind of an overwhelming feeling actually, ecstatic even. I now really see the potential for these kind of best seat in the house 360 videos. Now I just need Thom Yorke to sing in front of me while staring longingly into my eyes :p

Would be great if the sports content could get in on the 3d setups but I'm sure that's hard as hell to pull off for live streaming.

Thanks for the awesome info, keep it coming. Mine should be arriving by next Tuesday and I am counting the seconds. My only experience with VR has been with the Oculus DK 1 and I expect for the Gear VR to be a better experience, especially when it comes to resolution.

To save time I was looking for a way to download VR apps ahead of time, but it doesn't seem to be possible. If you don't mind I have a couple of questions.

1-What experience do you like the most so far?

2-Have you felt any type of motion sickness?

3-Have you gotten the warning message informing that the phone is getting hot?

The resolution bump will be huge for sure (I'm looking forward to it myself even after using DK2) but the thing I remember most from the jump from the DK1 screen to DK2 screen (which is a note 3 screen) was the rich colors and deep blacks. That alone made a world of difference compared to DK1's milky, gray pixels.

I'm very interested in this but don't have a samsung phone. What's the best, cheapest option for me? I figure I could use it basically like an iPod for VR

Most welcome. You actually can dl apps ahead of time, here's some instructions from reddit how to do it (ignore note 4 part its confirmed working on newer phones):

Quick and easy process.

1. Go to Playstore and download "Quick Shortcut Maker" https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....quickshortcut

2. After the app installs, have it look for "VRSetupWizardStub" this is the command the Note 4 receives the first time you plug the device into Gear VR

3. Tap the Try button

As long as you have a compatible Note 4 model, the Oculus app should launch. Now you can download VR apps and games to your device ahead of time, your Gear VR experience will be fully loaded before UPS drops it off at your door.

As for the questions...

1. For games or geometry 3d experiences my favorites so far are Androids Dream (game jam title so will have to sideload it) and Dead Secret. For video content its Jurassic World and Kurios.

2. My motion sickness isn't so much nausea as it is headaches, and yes I had a few during my first day with it but it went away the second day I had it. Ymmv.

3. I have yet to get an overheat warning, and longest session so far is probably around 30-40 mins so I haven't really stress tested it. On Note 5 and don't use the faceplate.

I wouldn't really recommend anything else besides the Gear VR, Oculus CV or the HTC Vive. VR is something that can make you sick really fast if its not done well. Maybe the Google Cardboard so you can have a basic idea about VR.

WOW! THANKS! Now I can hit the ground running. I have a Note 5 as well so it's good to read you haven't experienced this message.

Sorry. I meant what phone should I get? I don't plan to use it like a phone, just like an ipod touch for VR. I was thinking the S6 but not sure where I can get a good price on one. Wish they had a bundle where they could sell both items together

Overall the DK2 was a nice jump from DK1 but the drop in FOV was a letdown. Almost enough to make me rather use DK1. GearVR has a good blend of everything minus the positional tracking.

I bought an unlocked 32GB S6 from Newegg through their eBay store for $450.

If you are not going to be using it to make calls, have you considered buying ex-demo units on ebay?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SALE-GALAXY-S6-Edge-DEMO-UNIT-Excellent-Condition-SOLD-AS-IS-/231749644020?hash=item35f55aeef4:g:EJ4AAOSwtlhWGByq

These units won't be able to make phone calls, but should be okay to use as media device.

Got an external mobile battery earlier, this thing is a godsend for long sessions considering how fast the gear chews through the phone battery.

I love using the cinema, it's so cool kicking back in your own personal theater. Now if only Netflix would offer a theater environment...

Whats the difference between the "normal" Gear Vr & Innovation edition?

Is it worth getting the Innovation edition over the pleb one?

Edit: Fucking exchange rates, purchasing the Gear VR would run me the equivalent of 230$, fuck that.

from the OP:

The new Gear VR is 19% lighter than the previous Innovator Edition and features improved ergonomics plus a completely redesigned touchpad for easier navigation.

Can you download MilkVR videos without going in to the Gear? I've been queuing a bunch of videos in the app and then going into a game while I wait, it seems like this makes overheating more likely. I'd prefer to select videos from the phone interface anyway.

Also, is there a way to filter the MilkVR search so that I only get 3D content in the results?

You can manually download videos and copy them to the device if you can find them, but I don't know a good source for that. Still, instructions on how to name the files (the file name tells Milk VR whether it's 180 / 360 2D/3D etc) I found here this morning:

http://virtual-workshop.net/index.php/229-2/

I definitely experience more overheating if my phone is downloading too, so you weren't imagining that. I didn't find a filter or category or way of just getting 3D videos from Milk either. I'll hit up someone who I know that I think is working on the software with the suggestion.

I just got a note 4 2 months ago, and now I wish I had gone with a note 5, despite the lack of removable battery/upgradeable sd card :/ Oh well, guess I'll wait for PC vr.

Hi all,

I'm going to get a new phone today at T mobile and was wondering which phone works the best and is the most "future proof" for upcoming games performance wise in VR?

EDIT: Looks like all the phones are almost identical spec wise so I'm thinking I'll go with the Note5 for the bigger FOV.

Yeah, I suppose a 3D category would be more useful than a 3D search-filter given that there probably aren't enough 3D videos to return results on many given subjects and I'm desperate enough for 360degree 3D that I'm impressed by GE's promotional film on brain-research.

Samsung S6 and Samsung Note 5 are equally good (though Note 5 might have better FOV due to screen size) and should set you up perfectly for the next three years. They both have the same chipset/innards.

Awesome, thnx for the confirmation. Going to get the Note5.

Really enjoyed the Inside Impact video with Clinton.

That scene where a girl is hearing for the first time thanks to a hearing aid was really touching, and that scene in particular had some of the best immersion I've felt from a 360 video.

Spinning around in the classroom and seeing all the kids was surreal, they nailed it with positioning the camera at a desk. These empathy experiences can be pretty powerful, especially with that Felix&Paul setup. Hope we see more from them soon.

Still wanting to see a quality 360 front row/center stage concert video, anyone know of any for the gear with good 3d and video quality? Was hoping the Chris Milk "Hello, Again" Beck concert with binaural audio would have gotten a release by now, guess Lincoln are being grubby about it.

You're going to spend $400+ on a phone exclusively for VR?

actually, guys who have the new gear , can you confirm please the new youtube VR modes worth with it? i assume yes?

You have to use a package handler to be able to use the YouTube stuff because when you plug your phone into the Gear VR, it either boots to an app you have selected or goes straight to Oculus Home. For YouTube VR stuff to work, you have to disable that.

Well, T-Mobile still hasn't shipped the unit I ordered yesterday, so I have a feeling they are sold out as well but just continued taking orders without telling anyone it was out of stock...bastards...

Updates to Oculus Social and Video...

Good to see rentals as an option now.

Shipment? Did amazon even send out a single unit? I cancelled mine last friday and purchased from BB.

I honestly have no idea. My order status hasn't changed but I have to imagine they've at least shipped out the first batch since it's now showing as sold out on their website. Should've ordered through BB I guess....

I was surprised by how good Samsung's setup was. In a lot of demos I've tried it's clearer than Oculus's setup (but still a far cry from Vive). If you've got a Galaxy S6 or whatever, this is a great way to blow $100. Kind of wish I had a Galaxy phone for this purpose. iPhone 6s in Google Cardboard is not a great experience.

Yep looks like amazon finally did ship some out.

I have an iPhone 6 Plus, and I keep debating swapping for a Note 5 or S6. :S

So yeah, I do know a guy involved in developing Milk VR (I think he's in charge of QA...) anyway, the next major feature they have planned is a 2D interface to let you browse and queue up videos for download just using the phone, which is great news. I asked him about a filter for 3D only content, and he's going to pass it along to the devs. It's not currently on the road map, but hopefully we'll have changed that :)

That's good to hear. I wasn't even browsing the Samsung store within Oculus Home, just using the 2d Oculus one and then was like "there's a whole lot of games and apps I missed". Hopefully we can get a 2d Samsung one as well at some point.

A Star Wars Force Awakens VR experience is coming out Dec 2nd, Google is sponsoring it for cardboard, here's hoping it gets a port to Gear or the CVs at some point.

Today VR and Star Wars fans got the news that they have been waiting for, Star Wars is coming to VR (100% officially this time).

Developed in collaboration between Google, Verizon and Disney, the experience will release on December 2 and will be wholly new to the Star Wars universe. According to StarWars.com, the experience will include a “compelling story and exclusive, never-seen-before content, which ties directly into the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

Fans will be able to access the experience through the official Star Wars app on iOS and Andriod.

Hero Bound is pretty sweet if a bit casual, they nailed the scale of environments and camera positioning in each room so you don't have to crane your head too much to see everything. The intro area with the volcano is awesome. This makes me want a native Zelda VR game pretty bad.

Was having a blast playing Smash Hit, so simple yet so addictive, hearing that shattering sound doesn't get old.

Played a bit more of Dead Secret but had to quit due to some nails-on-a-chalkboard sound stuttering bug making the protagonist slur her words and music sound glitchy, downloaded an update that hopefully fixes it. That game can certainly spook you in a subtle way, great storytelling and note/diary collecting exposition. Environments are really well done too.

I might have to take a break from Dreadhalls, wasn't expecting that to spook me as much as it did, Oculus version seems wayyy basic and stripped down compared to this one. Timing of scares appears to be a lot more meticulous even if it is randomized. Just the way monsters can be spotted and you just look off in a direction away from them, only to turn your view back and they're right next to you...jesus christ. If there's a game that's gonna give somebody a coronary in vr it's that one. I only ever made it out of the early Oculus version once, curious how much bigger the dungeon is in this. At this rate I'll complete it in a few months xD

I can't tell you how excited I am for this. I'll definitely be picking up a serious VR headset, but this is fantastic that this came out for phones. It'll give me a great taste for what is ahead. Virtual reality has basically been my life for the past few years, it has really taken over my interests for video games.

I have an iPhone 6 Plus, and I keep debating swapping for a Note 5 or S6. :S

I would do it. iPhone is really lacking in terms of innovation. The S6 is a powerful phone as its self, I would highly recommend it.
