Samsung halting production of the Note 7

Apple already have the high end mobile crown. They just going to gobble up the people that they lost to Samsung over the last few years.

The IPhone 7 plus is a good phone. But it's not a great phone in terms of offering something new and Samsung had a good chance to get decent sales in. We all know the big overhaul for IPhone is coming next year, so this year was Samsungs chance to put a dent in Apples sales. As whatever phone Samsung release next fall is going to get destroyed by the 10th anniversary IPhone.

Apple stock hits highest since December on Samsung Note 7 fire crisis

This is the end for the Note's brand without a doubt
but is it for Samsung as well?

i will never buy a samsung's phone after this fiasco

Oh shit, didn't even think about that. I really want to keep it and really do hope they come up with a proper solution, but I'm nervous charging this thing and having my kids use it even though I have one of the newer models. At this point I only charge it while at work or during the day when it's in sight to make sure I can keep an eye on it.

These things are catching fire when just sitting on a table; it's not just a charging issue. And I certainly wouldn't let any kids of mine near those things, they're a safety hazard at this point. I understand you love the phone, but it's in your best interest to return it. If they figure out the issue I assume there will be an upgrade path for a new-new one.

Yeah I'm pretty much done at this point. It's either go back to my previous phone which is old and beat to hell or see what Verizon will allow me to exchange to. I'm just thinking they will refuse since the screen has a crack running down the left edge.

I'd think they start doing what they do in China and Japan everywhere else now. Which is remove their logo from the front of the phone.

We're talking what, 3 cases out of a few million units? It's more likely to get hit by lightning, than to have a faulty replacement unit.

Every smartphone line in existence had cases of faulty batteries (aka "exploding") - even the new Iphone. The replacement units of the Note 7 are just in a very focused limelight for a reason. That's not to say that there might not be an deeper issue with the new phones, tho.

Wrong, it's five REPORTED cases in the USA ONLY in less than a week and just for the ~25% of phones that had already been replaced. Now extrapolate that over an average two year contract with all phones being replaced and including all countries in the world and its thousands upon thousands of needless fires. This is WAY above the norm.

60% as of 9/27

I hope you don't live in an apartment building or ever fly on a plane

why would i not fly on a plane?

other devices have actually caught fire on planes in the air

Thousands? No.

Thousands? No.

Worldwide over two years there absolutely would be. In less than two months there have been over 100 in the US alone and we haven't even hit the holiday season when many more phones would be bought. In less than a week there were a minimum of 5 fires in the US for replaced phones. At that run rate you're looking at thousands of fires within two years (5 fires / week * 104 weeks = 520 in the USA only).

I've heard about Edge's exploding now too? I have an S7, not an edge, and I am so fucking worried about it blowing up now lol

I don't get why people would hang on to the Note 7 like it's the last phone on the planet, you know when Samsung says to turn it off that something is seriously wrong.

Samsung as a company? No of course not. Their handling of this, not to mention producing such a disaster of a phone in the first place, has really been dreadful though.

So just how fucked is Samsung? Will all this be forgotten if the Galaxy 8 blows everyone's minds?

I'd still buy Samsung, but best believe I'd wait a bit to make sure I wasn't buying an eventual incendiary grenade.

You can easily get a stylus pen to go along with another phone.

Yes but a stylus does not have integrated pen features like the note 7.

Everyone that suggests a stylus is a great alternative have not used the features the note 7 has with the pen.

This really stinks but I am done with Samsung.

It is 5 cases in one week in the US, with cases also reported in Taiwan and South Korea. There were only 500,000 replacement units provided as of September 21. It statistically has a lower chance of getting hit by lightning.

I'm surprised but relieved that none of the cases resulted in a catastrophic loss of life. Just imagine if any one of them would've caught fire as it was charging in the middle of the night inside someone's home...

It really puts things into perspective, and why people saying "it's just a handful of cases per several million!" really have lost the plot. You don't fuck around with this shit. Cell phone batteries can be extremely dangerous if things go wrong.

This hasn't just damaged the Note brand but the Samsung brand too.

Had an older couple of woman in store the other day pointing at the S7 sign and saying "them are those phones that blow up, they're Samsungs 7 phones".

Ironically Samsung shares reached an all time high some days ago

Very unlikely. The phone has been out for ages. If there was an issue it would've been noticed long ago. If any are exploding/catching fire it is more indicative of freak incidents. We've even heard of iPhone fires through the years, I sincerely doubt it is anything beyond freak incidents which have been happening since lithium batteries were a thing.

The Note 7 uses a different battery and different internals to S7/Edge, there is something very, very wrong with this phone specifically that is causing this. It's unbelievable a company could twice put out a dangerous device like this. And it's clear at this point they actually don't know what the cause is.

Also your reaction is indicative of brand damage that is going to be very difficult to shake off.

The public's memory retention usually is pretty short and even forgiving at times, but Samsung really screwed up their chances with that botched recall. Samsung as a conglomerate, should be ok. But their smartphone division will probably never be the same. I imagine LG and Google to take the reigns for the Android market.

That's silly. It hurts, yes. But it's forgotten in a year. You don't lose your #1 spot over a single car crash. They may lose the people who bought a note 7 but that's a microscopic part of the market.
