Samsung halting production of the Note 7

You're both rolling the dice on the phone going all Mission Impossible on you at any time. It doesn't have to be charging to blow.

True, but honestly there's nothing else on the market that interests me. I've been with the Galaxy lineup since the S3 and loved my Note. I'm keeping a close eye on the phone and I'm holding off till the end of this month hoping that Samsung finally fixes the issue once and for all. If there's still no hope, I might go with the S7 Edge in place of the Note 7.

I will say Samsung owes something to the owners as they have the market for large phones with a stylus locked, yet we have to be cautious of this thing blowing up. I would easily grab the competitors phone if there was one.

I got a replacement note 7 and still love really love this phone. It's a shame really because I really like NOTE series. I've had one since the start. I really hope they figure their crap out and make the NOTE 8 good. I'm stupid enough to give them another shot at the risk explosion.

I don't really have choice as far as Android devices and Verizon. I like big phones with a pen.

If you are willing to risk your safety and your family safety go on ahead. There are plenty of other options out there.

Make sure to not keep that replacement unit. It's not worth the risk.

I agree I was just curios as to all these other pen alternative phones.

Galaxy Note 5

Not interested.

Samsung and CPSC: Turn off your Galaxy Note 7 right now

Yep:

In a corporate statement, Samsung said it will also "ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note7" while it investigates the cause of the fires.
It also said, "Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note7 or replacement Galaxy Note7 device should power down and stop using the device."

Unbelievable, thank god I picked up the Edge instead of waiting for the problem to be fixed. What a shame, that phone looked so awesome :/

So i wonder what went wrong? How do they replace batteries and still have them light on fire.

Samsung deserve burning for this. its reckless to put out replacements that are still dangerous. I'm quite certain they know exactly what is wrong with the phone but its likely a fundamental flaw in its design and they thought papering over the cracks may have helped.

Seriously? Fine, you win Samsung. How does the exchange work with Verizon? Do I just take the phone in and tell them I want to exchange for an Edge or something? Will they care if there's any damage to the phone? This really sucks to be honest.

If anything on the phone is damaged just light it on fire.

Seriously. How do you issue a recall on a phone and then put out a replacement that has the same issues? Did they not extensively test the replacements before shipping them out? Unbelievable.

I just got my Note 7 today and sadly it will remain in the box and go back to T-Mobile. =(

We're talking what, 3 cases out of a few million units? It's more likely to get hit by lightning, than to have a faulty replacement unit.

Every smartphone line in existence had cases of faulty batteries (aka "exploding") - even the new Iphone. The replacement units of the Note 7 are just in a very focused limelight for a reason. That's not to say that there might not be an deeper issue with the new phones, tho.

My guess is that they jumped to conclusions (.jpg) on the root cause of the problem. They likely did identify a manufacturing issue related to the batteries and assumed that addressing that issue would resolve the problem. However, in actuality, it turns out to be something completely different that they were not inspecting / monitoring during their validation phase of the replacement version. They will likely be much much more rigorous and methodical in investigating the issue now before releasing the a follow up product to market.

they had an official recall, they obviously did their own investigation and found a considerable defect in the engineering/design. And now the company is telling people to power them down.

This isn't some BS like all the other "-gate" issues. This is the real deal.

At this point it's more an emergency PR break than any safety concern. Every single new exploding phone is a new PR debacle all over again and again, whenever it happens. It tarnishes not only the Note smartphone line, but the whole mobile (maybe even umbrella) brand. They cut their losses short, rather than having to endure the negative PR forever.

You can also bet that the Note line is also figuratively 'burned' and won't be seen again.

Thats actually a high failure rate for the Lithium battery industry. Sony recalled nearly 10 million laptop batteries for less.

Anyway the point is not that it's "1 in a million" but that the failure rate is alarmingly higher than is to be expected. Sure, maybe the odds of something bad happening to you are low, but the outcome has the potential to be really bad for you and everyone around you. You can't brush off "that's hardly anything" when the government can and will turn it around to say "you're 10x more dangerous than any other device on the market".

The airline ban is never going away, leaving Samsung without much left to do but scrap it and try to mend their reputation.

Well i'm in a shitty position. The only other Android phone i'd want is the Pixel, but that's not out for another 10 days, and likely much longer than that before they're readily available in Verizon stores. I don't have a backup phone either. My options seem to be stick with my Note until then and hope it doesn't explode or get a phone I don't want.

If switching to different and assumingly good batteries didn't solve the issue, then there is something fundamental with the Note 7's design that's the root cause. If that is the case--and that's looking more and more likely the case--then Sammy has no choice but the halt sales.

it will be interesting the see what was the root cause of the Note 7 when the dust settles.

Go tell Verizon. They may give u a loaner of you preorder the Pixel.

Sigh.. I already replaced my note 7 originally. This is ridiculous. I think I'm done with Samsung. I don't want to switch to an s7 edge. I'm just really disappointed in the way they have handled everything. I have T-Mobile. What's the next best android device to get?

That's it for me. As much as I love the phone, I just cannot go through this replacement process again and again. :( S7E was my loaner phone, but it just wasn't as nice as Note7 IMO.

I am very very disappointed at Samsung, and I am not sure if I can ever go back to their product. I started with GS2 Epic 4g Touch, and used it for 3 full years w/o any issues, but WiMax was just being ditched everywhere.... so switched to Xperia Z3C. Started having issues just over 18 months with the phone, I thought Samsung phones are just made better. I love my Note7, for it's beautiful screen, and spen functionality, expandable memory, powerful performance, and great camera.... and I was thinking I truly found a phone that I could really like.

Wrong. I mean, explosively wrong - or more than likely, I'm just very unlucky when picking a phone.

I am thinking of hopping over to iOS for a change - hopefully I can get a nice iPhone7 tomorrow morning. (I actually stopped by Verizon store today after work to exchange my phone - and the waiting time was 80 min, no kidding - so just walked out)

try to get a pixel pre-order in.

Can I pre order via t-Mobile? I did a quick search online and it seems like it's only through Verizon or Google themselves. If that's the case I might have to just fully refund the note 7 and wait for the pixel.
ah fuck I forgot in america it's verizon only through carrier. Yeah try that :P

1. Is it okay for me to continue using my Galaxy Note7?

No. If you own a Galaxy Note7, you should power it down and take advantage of the remedies available, including a full refund at your place of purchase. If you bought your Galaxy Note7 from Samsung.com or have questions, you should contact us at 1-844-365-6197 and we can help you.

Apple are the biggest winners here. This doesn't just tarnish the second biggest mobile brand. People will go from Samsung to Apple as a result of this. It's not only done damage to the Note brand but to the S8 also. How can people trust Samsung after this?

Just got off of the phone with Verizon, my wife and I have been trying to get replacement Note 7's since the first recall, but haven't been able to do so due to stock. Now we are trying to swap down to S7 edge which are now also out of stock.

Any suggestions on a good phone to go to in lieu of the Note 7 debacle? Also, is Samsung offering any compensation for customer who have had to deal with this issue?

S7 Edge is basically the same phone without stylus. iPhone 7 plus is a good phone. Have to wait and see what people say about the Pixel.

iphone 7 or pixel if you want to stick with android.

I don't thinkt he verizon exclusivity was ALL google's choice. They needed to be on verizon to succeed because that's where most customers are. Verizon probably said they won't carry it at all if it's not exclusive for a period of time, but to make up for it they'll throw advertising dollars at it to match.

If manufacturers like huwawei and xiaomi DONT take advantage of this then apple deserves the high end mobile crown by default. This a golden goose opportunity for the Chinese mantufactures who want in on the mobile market in the west. Yes xiaomi has legal problems to work out but they need to invest massively in any and all methods to release their phones not only in Asia before sammy tries to regain its footing by next year. Personally I think huwawei will swoop in and steal a lot of market share and profits that were once sammy's. they already have a lot of phones released in the west and they can pump out phones real quick.

Apple already have the high end mobile crown. They just going to gobble up the people that they lost to Samsung over the last few years.

The IPhone 7 plus is a good phone. But it's not a great phone in terms of offering something new and Samsung had a good chance to get decent sales in. We all know the big overhaul for IPhone is coming next year, so this year was Samsungs chance to put a dent in Apples sales. As whatever phone Samsung release next fall is going to get destroyed by the 10th anniversary IPhone.

Pretty much this. It is crazy how badly this ended up.
