Samsung halting production of the Note 7

Hope they properly deal with the harm caused to people and explain what happened

Hopefully they also keep all the features of the Note Brand like the S Pen if they decided to rebrand. So the new whatever is essentially the Note 8.

Early adoption for the Note 8 will be horrendously low. People will literally be AFRAID to buy that phone.

They better make the Note 8 greatest damn phone EVER and sell it at a drastically reduced rate to get their reputation fixed on this one.

Hell, they might not even want to CALL it a Note. They may be forced to do a brand new line for it now to shake the stigma.

This demolished all the good will they have cultivated within me for years through many products.

Although I won't boycott them or anything I will never Day 1 again like I did with the Ativ.

Whatever comes out next fall will have no chance sales-wise against a redesigned iPhone.

At the very least I hope this forces Samsung to go above and beyond with the next revision in terms of value and the positive outcome of this is some even more extreme competition in this space next year.

They did do this well this year in terms of well implemented hardware features. What I really hope this allows them to do is try to push to improve the software experience hard by having less bloat and actually optimizing their snapdragon chipset like other companies did. Keep pushing screen tech and efficiency and camera because iPhone has caught up to them there. Improve battery life through better, smarter software and the better screen efficiency.

It's the right thing to do for now. They will learn from this, but consumers will be weary about the Note line. They need to home run the next iteration.

I wonder if they'll go back to user replaceable batteries.

Pretty much the main reason I went for the G5 over the Galaxy S 7 this year. What's weird is that with my previous phone, the Note 3, I've bought 3 unofficial batteires and never even had the thought they'd explode outside of some kind of external factor. I'm well aware of the energy batteires store, and when I vaped (to quit cigarettes) I only bought reputable 18650 manufacturers and inspected them for fakes.

The fact that the 7 has soldered in batteires is scary because Samsung's quality control here was worse than an eBay China clone's. Now with replacement units catching fire I'm not sure this a battery as much as a fundamental design flaw or chip issue.

It'll be tough to relaunch the Note 7. I don't think the Note brand is dead quite yet, this is not the Pinto. 8 better be awesome though.

Edit: just saw this: http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1291637

Okay. Maybe this is the smartphone Pinto. Nader is salivating.

People need to come to the realization that there will be no more "Note" series from Samsung. The brand is dead at this point. Too much damage has been done to the brand, and soon, Samsung's pockets as a result of this.

I hope all Galaxy S line phones come with an S.Pen then. I feel that was one of the best things about the Note line.

Shame. I heard the Note 7 was a solid piece of kit too.

Let this be a lesson to Samsung to never for one second even think about taking their finger off QA again.

I was thinking of getting either the Note 7 or V20 before this..fiasco. Now it's between the V20 and the Pixel XL. Thanks, Samsung, for making the choice...nah, it's still not easy to choose. ;_;

I currently have the S7.

I own a Note 5. I've owned a Note since the 1st gen. This hurts. This might be it for the series.

Goodnight sweet prince.

I have a Note 5 as well, and I love it so much. It's an amazing phone with a killer camera. I'm not a huge fan of Samsung as a company but I'm sad that the Note brand has taken such a beating this year.

I hope this is a lesson for the industry.

I don't need my phone to be as thin as a piece of fucking paper.

Just let me have a removable fucking battery with a fucking microsd card slot.

Fuck.

Hopefully this destroys Samsung's reputation and we get someone else to lead the Android charge. They and LGs are just tarnishing the android name with their shit quality control and awful bloatware.
Google needs to get more serious ASAP. Get phones with stock android at all the popular pricepoints and make them available widely.
It was disheartened to not be able to find a Nexus at a decent price where I live the last time I was looking for a phone.

They successfully killed the idea that Samsung hardware is better than Apple hardware and they also killed the Note brand in the US and major western markets. It's disappointing, but they'll probably just integrate the Note brand with the regular S line and rebrand it as such.

For next years phone, I think they should consider reintroducing removable batteries and not prioritizing a razor thin profile for the device. Also, they shouldn't follow in the footsteps of Apple by removing ports, because quite frankly, the Galaxy phones will need a lot of goodwill next year.

I hope this is a lesson for the industry.

Completely agree.

Does the thinness of the device and non removable battery have anything do with the exploding note 7s?

This isn't the reason for exploding batteries though. The lesson here is to make phones that don't blow up.

The issue is caused by a battery cell failure that users could have mitigated by using a different battery from a manufacturer that doesn't have the problem. But that's not an option so now the entire phone line has to be scrapped.

Probably. Making a device thinner can cause problems with heat dissipation and thus make the battery easier to overheat.
Having a non removable battery also makes the problem harder to fix since you can't just swap a faulty battery and you need replacement phones.
Samsung went cheap on the battery cells this year to try and increase their profit margin and now the batteries are crapping out(a common problem in their cheaper phones)

I live in a town that literally only exists because we have a Samsung factory here. People aren't exactly happy right now.

are they making the Note 7? or part of the chain? Samsung's stocks are the highest in their history at the moment, the N7 is just a small blip in their product line

Samsung makes the best android phones spec wise, the hell are you even talking about.

I love Google but at $700/£599, the Pixel isn't an option for me. I was banking on snagging a Galaxy Note 7. Oh well, I guess I'll wait for what Microsoft/Apple/Oppo have in store in the coming months.
