Samsung's Galaxy S5 has leaked

Skipping a generation was supposed to make me exited. I had a captivate...now gs3...but am feeling nothing for the gs5. Maybe if the battery life us amazing and unlocked bootloader/custom rim friendly I'll revisit.

Also the OS footprint has become larger and larger and defeats the purpose of even owning 16 GB version of the phone. Unlike iOS which is small compared to Touchwiz.

The purpose of the 16GB version is that you can buy an additional 64 GB of storage for $45 because MicroSD cards are so cheap. You can probably also unlock the bootloader and put on a custom ROM with a smaller footprint within the first week of release.

How much would an extra 64 GB run you on the iPhone?

That is the least sensible post I have ever read. Samsung going the "Apple route" is going to force your to go to Apple?

That you EVER read huh, Really? Well I never owned an Iphone before so I don't know what I'm missing. Samsung is now doing the incremental upgrade thing to their phones. I was hoping for a big improvement in this one but its just an S4s. So now I'm debating to go Iphone 6 or something else at the end of the year when my upgrade hits. Is that better for you buddy

i hope all of you people swearing off Samsung and backing HTC/Sony/LG follow thru...
Currently on an HTC One. I have a sister with a Note 2 and my pops has the S3. I thought they were pretty decent for their time and price points, so I was looking forward to the S5 reveal. Ha. I was naive to believe that Sammy would actually implement modern design in their phone lineup. HTC and Sony are now the only two vying for my money. Might go with Sony just because I love what they've done with the Z2 and it's modern design, also I don't think I see myself wanting just a slightly better HTC One which is what we are all expecting from HTC.

I already have 64 gb micro sd card... the problem is most new games or apps dont go into external memory. So this is a big in my opinion for new android phones...

Seems like a decent enough upgrade to me from the S4, especially going by the battery life promises. That said, I'm thinking I'll wait to see what LG has before laying down any cash this year. The one thing that would keep me in the Samsung camp at the moment is the Gear Fit.

You should also consider what LG got to offer. The G2 is an amazing phone.

Just the size of of the device with a huge screen, makes the Z1 feel like a brick.

I just updated to kit kat too while the the z1 I have to a few more months.

I knew I was forgetting something. Definitely going to check that out. Personally I like the bigger phone screens, but I'm definitely looking for something will small bezels and onscreen buttons.

This might be the best place to ask at the moment: I have an S3 and AT&T have sent me a text recently stating that my number was eligible for a free smartphone upgrade. I was thinking about whether or not it's worth upgrading to an S4 or possibly an S5? Or should I just stick with my S3 at this point?

I think that the Note 3 will be my last Samsung phone, I have a Spigen Slim Armour case for it and Samsung have deliberately killed the S View functionality because it's a third party case. Well if that's the way they want to go, as well as releasing uninspiring mobile devices then I'll take my business elsewhere.

How did they kill that functionality or is the case to thick for it?

Sweeeeeeeet. When is this due to come out? My S3 is due to be replaced in October.

Phone announcements are so boring nowadays. I wonder when someone will come up with the next big thing.

Until bendable batteries and motherboards are a possibility, I'm afraid to say that we'll be seeing the same thing for a good while yet. SoC's are now as powerful as you'd ever need them. I mean, who needs anything more than a 2Ghz quad core CPU? Or 2/3GB RAM? What we need is more built in storage, no more 16GB devices. And larger batteries. Even 2800mah isn't going to get you through a day of medium or heavy use.

My question about the S5 is, how much/how little Samsung bloatware is in that 8GB required space? Is it just so they can expand for future updates? Is Google Now/Voice the default over S-Voice? Is there a Samsung app/music/video store still?

Has been said a few times already, but this just confirms again that I made a really good purchase decision getting the LG G2. Great price, awesome screen, amazing battery life and I really like the size.

It's only in the last year that there have been really good mass market alternatives to the galaxy s line in the android world (HTC One, Xperia Z, LG G2) so I can't really blame people and I was skeptical myself when I got a Note 3 to replace my One but it's not that bad actually....if they lighten up on touchwiz next time that would be better

How quickly people forget:

I'm not defending the uninspired design in the S5, I had the original N7 and it felt great with the perforated back. It may look aesthetically ugly but you'll be holding your phone in the palm of your hand a lot more than you'll be looking at the back and that's what really matters.

I wonder how tough the water resist of that phone when the back is like this..

octo.jpg

It's got an IP67 certification

6 – ” Dust Protected “; Totally protected against dust ingress.; complete protection against contact
7- ” Immersion Protected “; Protected against short periods of immersion in water.Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion). Test duration: 30 minutes; Immersion at depth of at least 1 m measured at bottom of device, and at least 15 cm measured at top of device

I have a Korean friend who was applying to Samsung's mobile division... and the nature of the organization was that it's a clone factory. They wanted you to pass IQ tests to screen out the multitudes of Koreans were applying... Only hard working order-takers need apply. Innovation? Nah, Better you be a smart person who follows orders. That's all that will be let in that organization.

I think Samsung's best way forward to to cultivate a "design culture". They need an individualistic creative class of designers.. Creatives with a little autonomy to create the next great product. But they are miles away from that.

There's a reason why these phones are hardly inspiring. This is a company culture that is designed to line up the hardest working troops, and copy the designs of the West. No innovation here. I believe they will be outmaneuvered eventually.

Samsung is now in the position where Nokia was 10 years ago. They've gained a huge market share but growing so fast in all directions can result a level of bureaucracy that kills innovation and fresh ideas. The decisions they make now can have long-lasting effects on whether they stabillize their position or stagnate and fall like Nokia.

I've got the choice between an iphone 4s 16gb for £180 or a Nexus 5 for £220.

I borrowed a Nexus 5 over the weekend. It's an amazing piece of tech for the price, fast, camera was good, battery was decent. However it felt slightly too big for a phone, it almost seemed impractical. For this reason I'm considering a iphone 4s. Anyone here using iOS7 on a 4s? Any issues or are they being overblown?

What's your advice smartphonegaf?

Every single aspect of this phone screams of being phoned in. Design? Let's just follow what we have done for years not and add a nexus 7 2012 ish back. Apple have a fingerprint scanner? Let's add a worse one which requires you to slowly slide your finger over it. Google wants us to tone down touchwiz? Ok, but lets pack it full of bloat anyway. Scree? Let's use the same one as the S4, just a little it bigger. Etc etc.

Just to weigh in here, I have to say I'm the total opposite. 3.5" screen is ludicrously small at this point.

Do you currently have a smartphone?

You won't get used to a 5" phone over a weekend. After a few months you'll think the 4S is tiny.

Eventually you'll find 3.5" way too small, in a world where most flagship are going 5" and rumours of Apple going even higher than 4" you'll eventually get tired of the small screen.
I recommend you trying to get used to the Nexus 5, or you can look at other phones.

I find 5" a sweet spot, I have no problems operating my phone with 1 hand and I don't need any hand gymnastics either.

i am very dissapointed with this device. its almost like note 3 :/

i was hoping for 2k resolution. it doesnt even have the latest snapdraon processor (801 vs 800)

it only has 2 Gig of ram. i mean what gives, even the note has 3 gigs of ram.

compare it to the Xperia Z2, that phone is a much better buying option. better processor, in my eyes better screen {never was a fan of super amoled}. and the Xperia Z2 is way more attractive than this crap.

i skipped GS4, and i will skip GS5. now i am waiting for HTC two (or whatever they call it) and compare it with Z2.

if HTC two is also 1080P, then i will stick to my iphone 5s and wait for 6.

Your post is logical until the last sentence? Why would the the HTC being 1080p make you stick with the iPhone? That's still better than the iPhone...

Don't go for the phone that was outdated a year ago. The Nexus 5 won't feel so big after a few days.

true. but to be honest i cant see much of a difference between 4 inch 720P { which i assume the iphone 5s screen is around this figure} and a 5 inch 1080P

yeah there is a difference of course i am not blind. but i am just saying its not that big. of difference otherwise i would have purchased the HTC one or xperia Z1 and not Iphone 5s.

however, 2k is a totally different story. that is something worth upgrading for. which is what i was hoping for " my only remaining hope is HTC two now.

i believe that there is a phone Called " Find 7" i think and its going to be released with a 2K screen. i just do not know anything about it yet.

.

The iPhone 5S has a 640p display. It's technically not even HD, were it not for their 'retina' display, which to be honest, I still don't really know if that's just a marketing term or what.
