Samurai Warriors 4 |OT| Raging through Japanese History at Hyper Speed

Only played the first stage so far but know I am going to lose a lot of time to this game. I'm actually scared to know how many hours I have sunk into Musou games this year. DW8XL, HW, WO3U and now this.

Really liking the idea behind hyper attacks, adds a lot more variety. Game also looks pretty damn good on PS4, certainly the best looking Warriors game so far. Kind of wish this and Bayonetta 2 weren't coming out in the same week, going to be hard to divide my time between both! And I haven't even finished the Master Quest adventure map in HW!

Edit: Oh, and definitely play on hard mode if you have played any musou games before. Seems very well balanced.

Really loving this game so far. Haven't even touched the story mode yet lol

Also, my gamestop code still doesn't work OTL

Oh nice, I screwed up and failed a stage and it still let me keep all the items and experience I got up until that point instead of just losing all the progress. Very welcome addition.

What's the difference between this one and the new Dynasty Warriors game? Is it just merely different set pieces? I would like to get into to one of these game, tried the demo for HW at Target, and I'm not sure which one I should get.

Despite the fact that I've been playing pretty much nothing but Hyrule Warriors since it came out, I'm loving this already.

Just hook the Musou up to my veins, I guess.
I know the feeling. I've still got to finish Orochi 3 Ultimate and Hyrule Warriors, yet I will likely be buying this and Shinovi Versus shortly. All musou, all the time.

Bayo comes out Friday too ... HACK AND SLASH AND SHOOT ALL THE THINGS!

This isn't really an addition, Samurai Warriors has always had this (I want to say even the first game had it) and the Dynasty Warriors team stubbornly refuses to add this to the DW series for whatever reason

Haven't played a mainline Samurai Warriors since the first, never bothered to buy SW2 only because I salty my favorite character was removed, and 3 was on the Wii.

I'm enjoying the combat, but can't help but feel like the overall tone of the game is too similar to Dynasty Warriors now with all this lovey dovey friendship nonsense I've seen so far. I much prefer the darker atmosphere of the original game. The objectives seem kinda shallow this time around, too. Also, who the hell thought it would be a good idea to put speech bubbles in the center of the screen like that? WTF?

I still love the game and I'm gonna plat it for sure, I just kinda miss the first game.

Just played a stage with remote play on the Vita. Wow, it works perfectly! The controls aren't complex so they translate to the Vita really well. You only need to use the touchscreen to pause or call your horse. Really liking this game, I've played a SW before.

Ah ok, this my first SW game outside of the 3DS Chronicles game. Assumed it was new because WO and DW don't have it. They should really get on that, spending 40 minutes on a stage and then losing everything because of a surprise musou attack from a general is a real drag in those games.

WO3 is probably the best Musou ever. For 60 bucks or however much it costs on ps4, the amount of content you'll get for it is insane.

Yeah but it's a shitty port. No graphic enhancements other than resolution and still runs like shit. The load times are bad as well, especially the ones for little cutscenes during a stage. So infuriating for the gameplay to suddenly stop and show a loading screen just for a pointless short cutscene. It would have been the best musou game ever if they had given it the same treatment as SW4.

My first Musou game ever, and it's great so far. 2 Missions into the Legend of Kanto, been playing as Lady Hayakawa and Kai as secondary. Though I feel the game does a good job with the tutorials, there seems to be many elements that are not clearly explained for a newcomer to this long-running series - 3 questions that bother me especially, if anyone could explain them to me, that would be great :D

- in the mission objective screen, there are some "???" objectives with an avatar of other characters next to them, what are those for?

- I did a musou move with Lady Hayakawa and Kai simultaniously together, though I have no idea how I triggered that.

- few minutes after that both were connected through a red, lightning-like line, - also no idea what that was und what it was for.

These two questions have the same answer, if memory serves.

The red lightning "tether" between your two characters indicates that you can do the double musou attack, which you can only do when your two characters have that tether between them, otherwise you'll just do the musou attack for the character you're playing.

I don't have the answer to your first question, unfortunately.

Thanks for the answers, suspected something like this!

I have not played a Samurai Warriors-game since the second one, and I have played most of the Dynasty-series.

Watched some Twitch-streams yesterday, this game seems right up my alley. I can see myself playing this after a long evening shift... Good stuff.

I'm actually kind of with you a bit on this. Sam 1 is still probably my overall favorite game in the franchise, and while so many aspects of combat and various features have improved moving forward, it also feels a bit dumbed down for the sake of accessibility.

Objectives used to be meaningfully integrated into the battlefield maps and core strategy providing sufficient risk and choices for attempting to take them on. Choosing to disrupt food supplies or prevent a fire attack had actual consequence or repercussion based on your selection that dynamically altered the flow of the battle progression. Now you are just following an almost linear guide path through stages with objectives like "kill the general 3 feet in front of you" or 'take down X number of enemies in X time'. They aren't integrated into the actual battle as seamlessly. You aren't forced to make split decisions or break your intended path barely at all. Morale isn't quite such a decisive factor to manage as it once was either. The new 'red zone' system is a great concept, but so far all bannermen are placed directly in your path without much risk to discovering and stamping them out.

Granted, the game is still a blast to play, but it's less tactfully mindful than it once was.

No dub reveals another issue---you got to pay attention to the text (why's it in the middle!) unless you know Japanese, which is annoying. You also miss out on the cool pre-Musou lines which aren't even subtitled. :(

Also, can you target foes? I always seem to miss the Boss.

Any recommendation for what order to do Story Mode in?

Create-A-Character's pretty great, lots of nice options. I made Gintoki at first from Gintama which was pretty easy to do---person who asked about Kenshin, yeah, I swear I saw a scar option that's just like his.

Which is the best PS4 DW-type game with a focus on RPG elements like deep character/weapon/loot systems?

This one seems to be the best in terms of taking advantage of the PS4 capability (environment detail, draw distance etc)

For the first question, the missions showing another character are ones that you need to play as that character to have the mission pop up.

Yea, DW8 had english voice acting and all battle commentary was also outputted to the controller speaker which I loved. Having that secondary audio source meant that the voices were not drowned out with the music and sound effects and I found it very easy to parse out orders without having to read the screen. SW4 at least highlights all the pertinent info on the minimap so you really need not pay attention to the orders clearly, but you miss out on some lore and interactions.

No auto-target sadly. Orochi 3 had a great camera snap that was not utilized in this game. Gotta manually track enemies in SW4, which you get used to but it's a bummer.

Which is the best PS4 DW-type game with a focus on RPG elements like deep character/weapon/loot systems?

All Musou games have a heavy emphasis on that stuff, but they do experiment with new systems and implementations that do make them feel a bit different. Weapon/item drops are a constant and combat skills and abilities are plentiful. Persistence is a key element of the addiction that is shared in all games.

Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate is the most flexible in terms of literally letting you customize, purchase, and fuse weapons and skills with the greatest ease.

Dynasty Warriors 8 comes somewhat close by allowing any character to wield any weapon, thus if you create or discover an incredibly powerful sword or item, anyone can wield it(including level 1 heroes allowing you to dive right into the harder difficulties to continue earning more powerful rewards). Much like Orochi 3, you can also customize weapons by fusing skills or abilities you like from weaker weapons onto stronger gear giving totally freedom to instantly create powerful gear with enough resources.

Sam 4 is a bit more RNG in terms of loot drops. You can power up gear by attaching gems to slots to improve innate skills, but there is no fusion(meaning lesser weapons you find essentially become vendor trash and you are more consistently dependent on discovering quality drops). Hyrule Warriors works very similarly, but you are given a few more options here than in that game.

All games are just incredibly massive in terms of scope and content. Sam 4 has the most interesting and enjoyable combat of the three (so far). DW8 has some novel concepts and some strong battle map layouts but the modes fall pretty flat(story and ambition mode are very dry and tedious). Orochi 3 has a ridiculous plot injected with personality and light humor which I appreciated.

I'd recommend Orochi 3 easily(as many others likely would). Sam 4 is technically the most advanced(in terms of aesthetics) and so far has been equally as addictive but we are all still early into it. Can't really go wrong with either for now.

I need some more Vita impressions...I rather play on Vita than my Ps4 but if it is a crap port then ill pass
It's what I've been playing. Seems just fine. The textures don't look good if you get up close to anything, but as a result of that it runs great.

Downloaded and installed it last night then played a single map. DAMN, I haven't played since SW2 so it's been awhile but they really upped their game with everything for this series. I love this style of Musou game more than I do how DW and WO is now so it's really good to have this. Gonna play the shit out of this guy, lol.

Hyper Attacks are such a nice addition to the game. Making triangle attacks less generic and more suited to fighting hoards is great and it really adds even more depth to the character movelists. Magoichi benefits from it so much, for example.

Ok so I caved and bought it last night enforce sleeping. Played a few maps this morning and it's amazing. Finally looks like a PS3 game runs flawlessly and the hyper attack is fantastic. Really adds to the sense if being a badass on the battlefield.

This is my first SW game and my knowledge of Japanese history isn't the greatest but loving it so far.

How diverse are the characters? I've only used like five so far, but are there any "clone characters", or is everyone unique? Love how you keep getting more and more moves as you level-up.

I wish this game had a nice "Chronicle" like DW8 had which laid out the linear plot for new fans. I only know the basics, but am confused as to where each Story fits the overall narrative.

So I got into the Warriors series with Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate and am looking for some more musou. Is this a good buy or should I get Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends?
Is there a possibility that this will get a similar expansion?

I've been reading that this sacrifices gameplay depth for flash in some impressions/reviews. Is that an accurate assessment?

There are only one set of kinda like clone characters (Kunoichi and Nene) cause Koei Tecmo is too lazy to give anyone in this series new weapons unlike change weapons frenzy in the DW series. But, it's only really their normal attacks and some of their charges that are the same (their C2-2 and C4-4) and I guess they are both hyper characters now too.

Only played a couple stages so far, but I love the game. Already making me forgot about the awful 3rd game.

I didn't think I'd like the removing of the triangle strong attacks outside of a combo, but the quick attack move that slices through peons is pretty cool, also works as a little bit of a speed boost.

Game looks pretty on the PS4 as well. Can't wait to unlock Musashi!

So what's best on PS4?

  • Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Complete Edition
  • Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate
  • Samurai Warriors 4

(I own all three, just not sure what to prioritize)

Also, does Samurai Warriors make you play as a pre-determined character before each scenario like Dynasty Warriors does now? Honestly, that tarnished the franchise for me a bit. Loved playing story mode with one character, leveling just them up.

Love the "finishing move" added in this game too, nice little touch rather than just killing with whatever.

Oh, and the anime movie included is awesome. Wish it wasn't so short though, I was expecting a full extra part =/

Does anyone know if the Gamestop codes are working now?

I just redeemed mine about 20 minutes ago.

Yes, it's kingdom style like DW7 and DW8, but you have a much larger choice of characters to choose from for each stage. I think at least 5 or 6 per stage.

It's not, framerate drops during musou attacks, especially ones with fire effects.

Still, how would you describe it comparing to DW8 (ps4)?

Is it better? Does it hold 60 with more ease or is just a constant fluctuating mess? And that DOF effect is toned down or is pretty much the same? I'm asking cause I'm still waiting for my copy and youtube videos aren't, in any way shape or form, the best way to judge the game on those fronts.

Thanks in advance

It's stable most of the time except the ones I mentioned above. It's really the rare occasion but depending on the character you have and your move set, it does slow down if you constantly make the same move in big crowds. It's not annoying but I just pointed it out considering we're on PS4 and the game still looks last gen to me.

I don't think the DOF is as intense as in DW8 but then again that didn't really bother me.

If you like these type of games and interested in the setting I'd recommend it.
Also, I believe DW8 XL is 30fps on PS4.

Thank you mate! I'm looking forward to playing it tomorrow (if I'm lucky). DW8 fps wasn't the best ever but it didn't bother me too much. I would have liked if it was better, but not a dealbreaker. If this one is better on both accounts, than all the better for me. :)

Judging from the videos, it seems like there are more enemy units on screen at all times, so I guess that performance boost had to come through some compromise in textures or models. But that's not at the top of my priorities when playing a musou game. Just want to slice dudes by the hundreds and burn everything in my path :P

The Gamestop DLC unlocks "Secret History" and there's two stages to play so far.

I played with a level 10 character and leveled up 5 times for completing the 1st scenario. lol.

I'm having so much fun with this, I love Nobuyuki, glad we finally got him as a character.

It's smoother, plays & looks better than DW8 imo. I prefer the weapon system too, didn't really care for the nonsense with the 2 weapons and affinity stuff.

I'd love for them to come up with a brand new engine for these musou games, hell I wouldn't mind if the graphics were on par with something like Yakuza Ishin, but this will do for now.
