This has been such a shitty year for me when it comes to deaths - first nujabes now satoshi kon.:(

dammit. I loved all this guy's work. :\ Starting with Perfect Blue at a young age to those late nights staying up and watching Paranoia Agent and more recently watching the brilliance that is Paprika & Tokyo Godfathers.

RIP, good sir.

Only 47 years old... :(

I've only seen three of his works. Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, and Paranoia Agent. I really enjoyed them. Way too soon. RIP.

This is a real kick in the balls; the man was easily one of the most interesting working in animation today. Or just film in general, even if Paprika was merely an entertaining pile of ideas.

On the upswing, now I get to force my girlfriend into watching Paranoia Agent with me. I can now insist it would be disrespectful not to do so.

Time to unpile all my anime and watch all of his stuff again.

Has there been any work on when Yume Robo will be out? It has to be almost done, by now.

It was slated for next year.

I'm just sort of shocked. I mean, I'm familiar with Satoshi Kon (I saw Paprika and a portion of Paranoia Agent) but he was hardly ever beyond my periphery. Still... at such an age he should have been creating for another few decades at least.

Havin' a drink of Dogfish Head to my man, Satoshi Kon. Really wish I had Tokyo Godfathers lying around, cause I could really use a pick me up right now :(

They ought to play ELO's Twilight at Kon's wake :/

Perfect Blue was the one that got me crazy over Kon. The anime world will never be the same without him.

Rest in peace.

What do you guys recommend should be the first Satoshi Kon movie to watch?

I've been thinking Perfect Blue. It's the only one of his that I've seen, but it was a very long time ago.

You can't go wrong with a single one.

Tragic news indeed. I was looking forward to his next work. My condolences to everyone who knew him and the entire Japanese animation industry, who has lost one of their greats. His legacy will always be remembered.

T_T

:(

Dammit. I was so looking forward to his next work too. FUCK. Guess I'm going to be doing a marathon of his works soon. RIP.

Just because it was in Venice Competition doesn't mean Marco thinks he's a master. Plus, this is the man who put the abysmal English-language TETSUO in competition last year :lol I'll withhold my personal opinions about Marco since it's irrelevant to this thread, but just because one guy thinks so doesn't mean the rest of the world has to agree. And I've been to his festival a number of times.

I'll reiterate that I do admire Kon's works, but it's a shame that he never managed to make that one masterpiece which will lift him above most of his compatriots.

In every film festival there are some great movies and some awful movies, and it's not because he put the movie in the competition, it's because he said it and he wrote it.

As others have said, Millenium Actress is a masterpiece too, some would consider Perfect Blue a masterpiece (ask Aronofsky), if you don't think he made a masterpiece, that's your opinion.

Honestly I can`t believe my eyes when I saw this thread title. Its just so sudden & too soon. Millennium Actress is probably my favourite anime movie ever.

RIP Satoshi Kon.

I`ll rent out Paprika this coming weekend to honour him.

I would never trust anything that Marco says. Been burned twice already by the guy. Never went back to Venice since.

But I already said many times that I deeply admire and respect Kon and his works. Isn't that enough? Why do I have to follow everyone else and declare his works masterpieces just because he passed away? I enjoyed them - and that's already more than what I can say about 90% of filmmakers.

Kon left a note...
Apparently, it was pancreatic cancer. He learned about it back in May and was told he had six months left to live at most.

The whole thing is freaking heartbreaking, and so are some of his recent comments on his site, in retrospect...

Well actually the post you are replying to said you didn't have to do that.

And either way, a discussion of works, rather then his death, is more fitting over here.

I can't connect to that link, can you say more about what he wrote? And about the other recent things? Can't say I can read Japanese and translators kinda suck.

Damn, this is so sudden. I was expecting him to have a long, illustrious career. Love all his movies.

RIP.

I found a repost on 2ch. It's an entry entitled "goodbye", and it's basically his final message to everyone he knows. He goes into detail about how he found out about the cancer, his life expectantly, and so on. I only read some of the beginning and the end, and it's really too depressing to read and translate. Maybe someone else will translate it, or maybe I'll read it and summarize some details later. T_T

I tried to post the original Japanese message here, but it was too long to fit into a post. Wow. Err.... yeah. :(

Edit: Uploaded it to Mediafire for those who want to read it.

I'm really sad to hear about this. One of my favourite anime directors and, together with Masaaki Yuasa putting out pretty much the most original, innovative work out there recently. There's still a lot of work I haven't seen of him but I was hoping to enjoy many, many more and watch him develop his art more and more :(.

The only film I haven't seen of Kon's is Tokyo Godfathers, and it's been on my shelf for the past month. I guess I know what I'm watching tonight.
RIP Satoshi Kon. You did amazing things. :(
