Saturn or N64?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sega_Saturn_games.

I guess my final thought is that (according to the above Wiki article) the Saturn had about 540 games, approx 140 more than the N64, and definitely had a better title diversity. Even with specific well regarded titles (Mario 64, the Two Zelda games, Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark, which I will readily concede being fantastic games, and amongst the best in their genres for the era) the virtual non-existence of specific key genres, coupled with some of the great titles from the Saturn, makes me very reluctant to suggest the N64 over the Saturn.

At the time, I would have picked N64. But now? I think I'd pick Saturn. Saturn made me an import gamer.

There's probably nothing like an OoT on Saturn, but there's a VF2 and so, so many awesome shooters and wacky stuff.

grab a saturn with princess crown, dragonforce, guardian heroes and capcom's D&D lineup..and the holy grail, Panzer Dragoon Saga.

you will win.

If I knew then what I do now (as well as had the money)? Saturn. Too much 2D goodness to pass up, in so many forms. Saturn Bomberman, Groove on Fight and Guardian Heroes alone would have been well worth it for me.

I'm sorry Saturn fighting games, but I can't pick you over Majora's Mask, Jet Force Gemini, and others.

N64 because the Saturn was only 32-bit.

Damn right. Need to be extra sure we got that 4 MB address space covered.

At the time I had a Saturn, and didn't regret it at all. SO many great games especially if you import. Capcom fighters with the RAM expansion! BEST D-PAD EVER!

I personally think the Saturn had the best Sound/Music system of that generation.

But 3DS will be my first time playing OoT. I played Mario 64 at my friends houses.

Saturn had some really cool software that you couldn't find anywhere else at the time... Panzer Dragoon series, Astal, VF2, VC2, Daytona USA CE, Dragon Force, Dark Saviour, Shining Force III, Enemy Zero, Burning Rangers, NiGHTS, Fighters Megamix, Virtual ON, Guardian Heroes, Sega Rally, NightWarriors, Magic Knight Rayearth, Shining the Holy Ark, Albert Odyssey, Legend of Oasis, Winter Heat, Saturn Bomberman...

Thing is though that, perhaps with the exception of NiGHTS and Panzer Dragoon Saga, the N64's best outshone the Saturns offerings.

Yeah! Xmen vs SF and Marvel vs SF with the 4MB cart were unreal compared to the PSX versions.

Was totally worth it, if only for having versions of MSHvSF and Vampire Savior that didn't suck.

Guardian Heroes is IMO the greatest console game ever made. But even then I still give it to the N64 based on the quantity of great titles. Saturn did its thing, but its library just cannot match the N64. When I consider, even for a SECOND the default 4 player of the console and some of the crazy games, No mercy, SF Rush, MKart, DKR, Goldeneye, Sin and Punishment, Starfox, FzeroX, Ogrebattle64, Super Smash Bros, Waverace, the early Mario Parties (hey, some of the early ones were fun back then), Bangai-O, I mean shit, and that doesnt touch on the legendary shit like OOT and the like. Ive got to give that to the N64, but Saturn was played often in my house, no doubt.

The playstation shits on them both from on high though.

Honestly, I couldn't name a single Saturn game even if I wanted to (except Sonic, I guess?). So, for me, N64 win by default.

If you want quirky Japanese games, 2D games and fighters, get a Saturn. If you want Nintendo games, 3D platformers and old school shooters, get an N64.

Yeah, it's up there. Kind of disappointed that it hasn't made it's way to XBLA & PSN.

Sony was lucky that one competitor was a shit to make games for and the other continued using cartidges :P

Mischief Makers > all Saturn games
Oh wow. Pretty much exactly what I came in here to post, didn't expect to get beaten to it.

Also... Magic Knight Rayearth got a game... and it was actually something worth remembering? Crazy.

Ironically, there wasn't even a "real" Sonic game for Saturn.

Yep, there wasn't really a Sonic game on the Saturn. Well it had Sonic Jam, but that was basically just the Genesis games with a mini 3D world/hub. It had Sonic 3D blast too, but that was also a Genesis game.

If were talking about american lineups than the N64 wins out for me. However if you take the excellent import library into account the N64 has no chance.

There weren't a large of amount of worthwhile games on the the N64 but some of my absolute favorite games are on that system.

goldeneye, mario kart, mario party... i dont think i would have had as much fun with friends with a saturn but i would have nerded out if i could have my pick of saturn games

id kill for a saturn these days... shame i cant speak japanese though

N64 without question.

Some of what I believe are the best games ever, amazingly fun multiplayer and some historic games that really helped define 3D gaming for today.

Edit: (And yes, I have 152 Saturn games, I did actually play both systems. :P)

Saturn, without even a hesitation. I can't even begin to imagine a situation in which I'd pick the N64 over anything. That system was basically my way to play Wrestlemania 2000, No Mercy, Harvest Moon 64, Snowboard Kids, and that's it.

Well, I guess maybe if we were picking system based on their wrestling games. Then maybe it'd win.

Saturn by a long shot , i hated the N64 with a passion. Outside of Mario 64 , Ogre Battle 64 and the 2 Zeldas it did nothing for me.

Imagine if a system had something like 320 games, but 8 of them or so were absolutely groundbreaking, and the rest were garbage.

Even thought I've never played a Sega Saturn, I'll still pick it over the Nintendo 64.

In this regard the N64 and Saturn were quite similar.

I think you could buy an N64 and every great game for it for the going price of one top-tier Saturn game. Considering how quickly and viciously Saturn games were clearanced it was certainly the better investment at the time.

I wouldn't want to pick. I liked them both a lot for different reasons. But today I would be more likely to play my Saturn than N64.

I want a Saturn very much, but ebay sellers gouge Canadians on shipping so badly it's ridiculous. Considering I'll have to buy a 4-in-1 card for the imports and a mod-chip to play the Shining Force scenario 2 and 3 translations the final cost is high enough that I'm reluctant to pull the trigger. (Not to mention it HAS to be a model 2 for me to even have a chance of properly modding the thing) I'm hoping I'll find a good deal from someone.

However since it has Shining Force 3 I'd have to say nothing on N64 could top that for me.

I got this game for $20 bucks on craigslist a few months ago along with Shining the Holy Ark and Galactic Attack. I don't think the guy knew what he had , it came with everything except the stickers.

Of all the N64 games, the only ones I still play today are F-Zero X, Blast Corp, and Tetrisphere. Would play Yoshi Story, but my copy died. Paper Mario might be worth going back to. I prefer Super Mario 64 on the DS for Luigi.

Saturn on the other hand? Oh amazing system for games for me to enjoy.

Assault Suit Leynos 2 is a great title that so many missed for 2D side scrolling mech action that is a beauty to watch. Great mechanics, wonderful controls, a grading system that makes you want to replay over and over again.
Guardian Heroes, the best console beat-em-up of that generation.
Princess Crown and Legend of Oasis for action RPGs
Burning Rangers
All those Arcade fighting games that almost made it rival the Neo Geo.
Shinobi Legions, ignore the acting.
Panzer Dragoon series for shooting.
Panzer Dragoon Saga for an amazing RPG experience.
Shmups, so many wonderful, wonderful, did I mention wonderful yet, shmups.
The better version of Grandia.
Dragon Force, a strategy RPG that was a true large battle of hundreds. Any fan of Ogre Battle would love this game. Nothing beats sending 100 of your best units against 100 of the opponents.
Magical Drop III for puzzle.

I loved the N64 when it was out, but it's long since decreased in how much I can go back to it for. Saturn has only increased in my love for it.
