Saudi preacher proves that Earth doesn't spin around its axis

This is hard to watch. Mostly because it's bullshit, but also because something like that is hard to comprehend in subtitles. So here for every who can't or don't want to watch the video:

Someone is asking whether the Earth moves or whether it is fixed in place. Does it move or remain fixed? The truth, as described by our scholars Iman Ibn Baz and Sheik Saleh Al-Fawzan, is that the Earth is fixed and does not move. This is in keeping with the Quranic text, and it makes sense as well. There is ample Quranic evidence that it is the sun that revolves around the Earth. As for evidence based on reason... (The Westerners) present all kinds of theories, but we Muslims also have theories and brains.

First, let's say that we go from here to Sharjah Airport and take a plane to China. Are you with me? Concentrate now. [takes out small object that looks like a small, round glass table]

If we take an international flight from Sharjah to China... You say that the Earh is turning, right? If the plane stopped in mid-air, wouldn't China come to it? Am I right or not? If the Earth really does turn - China should come to the plane. Now, let's assume that the Earth revolves the other way - the plane will never catch up with China no matter how long it flies. Since China is also revolving, you will never get there.

Secondly, Allah talked about the (celestial) house frequented (by angels). This house is located in the seventh heaven. The Prophet Muhammad said that if it fell from the sky, it would fall on the Kaaba. But if the Earth revolves, it would not fall on the Kaaba. it would fall in the ocean or somewhere on dry land.

This proves that the Earth is fixed in place.

The (Americans) say that they landed on the moon, but they never set foot or laid their eyes on it. They produced it all in Hollywood or I don't know where. They said that they had gone to the moon, and we just took their word for it.
Please be enlightened.

Wait what's the actual point of this thread?

To point at a preacher and just say "lmao look at how dumb he is, religion is so stupid"

Why were you itching to post this video OP?

How is the fuck is that newsworthy?

I just google searched "Rabbi disproving science" and got this link. I'm pretty sure if I made a thread and tried to make fun of the dude, no one would give a shit or they would call me antisemitic.

Dude, thread whining is a very bannable offense. Tread lightly.

Edit: Okay this thread is basically looking at one preacher from one of the most conservative Muslim countries on the planet and trying to say all Muslims believe this nonsense, I see the point of the thread now.

The fuck?? Where the hell did you get that from?? You need to take a chillpill. Not every jab at a random Muslim or the religion is a personal attack on you or on all Muslims, in fact it never is.

The irony here is that Arabic cultures generated a lot of mathematical and scientific advancements centuries ago, but now this.

If he were still alive, Isaac Newton would get an aneurism reading this.

It is hard to believe now that there was a time once, before the renaissance when Muslims were at the forefront of scientific thought.

Now, where was that thread asking about humanity and it's capability to regress?, I have something they may be interested in seeing. :P
I'm pretty sure people have had unpopular or wrong opinions since the beginning of time. What would this prove?

This. I don't doubt there are clerics or preachers or what have you that are that stupid but at the same time, memri has an obvious agenda that should exclude them from being taken at face value when it comes to stuff like this.

I completely disagree. Are you suggesting that they staged this video? That's almost as absurd a statement as claiming the moon landing was faked.

I am a former Muslim, native Arabic speaker from the Middle East and I can tell you this isn't an SNL skit or something. It's a real man saying the most dumbass shit one could say in the 21st century. And for that, I deemed it thread worthy.

Memri's agenda has absolutely zero bearing on the content of their videos. And this is what this thread, and every thread about a video they translated, was about. The content is real and golden.

I felt obligated to know more about the guy. This is the single piece of news that ever mentions him and hes been mocked about it by most local publications and people have been mocking him on twitter and facebook.

Presumably he was "educated" at a Madrassa.

Even if he was if I'm not mistaken education is standard in the country until high school (it then branches into scientific/management/religion) and until then you learn most of the basics of chemistry, physics and biology.

So true. I think that had more to do with the proximity of Greek, Roman/Byzantine societies, than Muslim scholars themselves, though.

Wow, but not surprising... There's more than a few batshit Christians that believe the same thing.

I hope he never jumps up in a moving vehicle or elevator that's going down, he'll be at risk of falling or going flying to his death. >_>

Yes, because we all know there is no such thing as an enlightened muslim scholar. Preposterous!

I didn't say that? They assimilated some knowledge and expanded on it in a scientific way, but some of it was distorted in order to reinforce their religion, in order to exert control over their subjects.

Anyone know how widespread these types of.... views.... are around there?

Well, he cites two scholars (the word in Arabic is actually the same for scientist) as teaching this. So the number is at least 3, but probably a lot more than that if there people of religious authority in a very religious community who are citing scripture and making "logical" arguments for it.

People who don't believe in basic science like the solar system should be barred from using all modern technology. Airplanes, cell phones, microphones, televisions, glasses, etc.

Your post makes it seem like you were trying to downplay their contribution. "oh, they only did it because greek books were just laying around". One of the biggest reasons why science thrived in Early and Medieval Islamic societies is because The Quran encouraged people to seek knowledge, expand their horizons and contemplate the universe. So, scientific knowledge was encouraged, and as a result, countless Greek and Roman scripts were translated and archived, and scholars began to build on those ideas and formulate new ones that eventually would lay down the foundation for many advances in science, and laid down the foundation to the European Renaissance.

There's a video of a different cleric on Memri making similar claims...

Although the editing for this one is pretty weird. Almost like they are trying to emphasis the point bout Muslims must follow the Quran more than the fact that he's spouting gibberish.

I know that, and I agree. I was just saying if there wasn't that exposure to all of that established knowledge in the first place, I don't believe their discoveries would have been as ground breaking as they were.

Nobody said anything about staging; strange leap for you to take really. Memri just translates and there's obviously a lot of wiggle room with how they might choose to interpret things. It's the nature of language.

Like I said, I don't doubt the cleric said something stupid or actually believes what he said, but at the same time, suggesting memri's agenda has no place in this is utterly disingenuous. And given that obvious and blatant agenda, I'll take any of their productions with a grain of salt, unless it's verified by a third party.

Fun facts about the Quran:

The word "اقرأ" (read) is mentioned 3 times.
The word "نكاح" (copulate; fuck) is mentioned 19 times.
The words "قتل" and "قتال" (killing and fighting) are mentioned 96 times.

What part of I am a native Arabic speaker and I'm a professional English speaker (I made a career out of writing and editing English) and that I vouch for the accuracy of the translation don't you understand?

The fact that Memri is out to make Arabs and Muslims look stupid is none of my concern. And has no bearing on the fucking content of the video itself.

I was tempted to translate the video myself and post it, but thankfully Memri saved me the effort. If I had posted it with my own translation yesterday, the only way the thread would have differed is by the lack of Memri whiners like yourself.

Wait, I wanna play this game too.

I mean... Isn't that true about anyone?

Shoulders of giants and all that...
