Scary movie scenes when you were young

A few that stick in my memory (all have been previously posted with images):

- Chucky: Stupidly watched Child's Play II when I was 8 or so. After that for a long time I had fears of him coming out of my wardrobe and stuffing a sock down my throat.

- The Darby O'Gill banshee: Maybe it's because I live in Ireland and was already terrified of the banshee legend, but this freaked the shit out of me. It's a feckin' universal rated film too!

- I.T.: I only saw about 10 minutes of this when I was a kid. It was enough for me to know not to watch any more of it. Clowns in general scared me (still not keen on them); hell, even Zeebo from Are You Afraid of the Dark creeped me out a little.

- The Exorcist: Absolutely terrifying. My friends all laughed at the end and said it was crap, boring and not scary. I bet every one of them was lying to themselves and shitting their pants.

- Terminator 2: As someone else mentioned, any scene with the terminator in it (Robert Patrick that is, not Arnie) scared the shit out of me. Pretty sure I didn't sleep that night and had to get my parents to calm me down.

That's all I can think of at the moment. I'm sure more will come to mind later.

Yea It scarred me so bad that I had a clown doll that I threw in the basement because I was terrified that the doll would come out of my closet and kill me. Then I was afraid of going into the basement. I eventually threw the doll out. Later when I was 13, I tried reading the book It and while it wasn't really that scary, I was crying while I was reading it because of the damage from the childhood memories.

What scared me so much about the book and movies isn't so much the clown part but the fact that she can become anything you fear. 'It' truly is fear incarnate and for a child that is absolutely terrifying.

I have to say some episodes of AYAotD were pretty damn creepy watching them as a kid. Not scary, just a bit creepy. I remember an episode where some kid was stuck in a pin ball game and he thought he was in a mall.

The Clown from IT was seriously disturbing. This is the one movie that I'm fairly sure will disturb any little kid that see's it.

Finding out that Tim Curry played IT blew my mind.

The Mouse King. I literally had nightmares about him as a small child. And for some reason I kept watching the movie over and over. @.@

Chucky freaked me out. I mean, look at that sadistic face.

'It' gave me the creeps only on the bathub scene, because unexpected blood message.

Large Marge scared the shit out of me

Temple of Doom face melter REALLY SCARED the shit out me

and that weird dog blowing the rich guy scene in The Shining

wow, so many people share my horror!

The alien ship scene in Fire in the Sky damaged me when I was in middle school. I was so scared of being abducted for a long time.

No movie has fucked me up more as a kid than Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Large Marge, Clown Dreams, Devil Francis, even the waving robot clown Pee-Wee chains his bike to...

clown.jpg

My parents took me with them to see it in the theater when it came out, I was 5 and I had no idea who Pee-Wee was. I had nightmares for weeks...and yet now, as an adult, it might be one of my absolute favorite movies evah.

As posted before, when I think of movies that screwed me up as a kid, this dude from Poltergeist comes to mind.

A few years later, It sealed my life-long fear of clowns.

Puppet Master

It scared me but I still continued to watch it. I love the series now...well except that shitty SyFy Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys movie.

Out of all the puppets Leech Woman freaked me out the worst.

I have no screen caps but the "Get Out" scene in The Amityville Horror when the priest was in the room full of flies. The clown scene in Poltergeist is good but the claw/hand reaching out of the TV was scarier for me. Finally, Pet Sematary, pretty much all of it.

What was this from?

I seem to remember some scenes from what may be two separate movies but they all got jumbled up in my memory:
* A poltergeist style haunted house movie that takes place in space-- either on a human or alien space ship
* A kid, at the very end of the movie, wakes up thinking everything was a nightmare and goes to his parents room (either because he was scared or because he heard/saw something) and when he walks in their room they are getting eaten (or were already eaten) by monsters/aliens

Again, I can't remember if these were unrelated scenes or if they were from the same film. One of my uncles had a huge stash of 70s/80s low-budget/grindhouse films so it could have been anything.

This. Jesus this movie when I was young. Also Golem from the Rankin and Bass Hobbit. We had that shit on vinyl and I swear to god golem's voice would have me up at night.

I also throw this into the mix as the bad guy was pretty scary to me as a child as well. There was a darkness to the film that kinda haunted me.

In Hook when they put one of the pirates inside a chest and throw in a huge ass spider. Goddamn it fuck that movie.

When I was young(and still do a bit) I always found Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands pretty scary. I know it's not a horror movie but he's just scary.

Probably Tobe Hooper's remake of INVADERS FROM MARS.

I think that IS it...

From the director of Poltergeist and, according to Wikipedia, the ending is exactly what I remember! Thanks!

This was creepy in The Shining and I have no idea what it meant, but the part in the movie when the women is trippin out is pretty nuts.

Quite possibly one of the most memorable, creepy instants of film. The utter lack of explanation and shocking appearance is really brilliant.

There is an explanation, mind you, but it still works without it.

oh and tv movie i guess works.

my sister and i just happened to turn on the tv right as the link above started (right after the last commercial break). we could guess it was alice in wonderlandy, but i think we were waiting to watch some other show. when the jabberwocky shows up OUT OF GODDAMN NOWHERE, i think both of us froze up for a sec before i rushed to turn the tv off. now it's really, really silly looking, but it was terrifying back then.

It's not a movie (it's from Sesame Street, of all things), but as a child I was absolutely terrified of the Bert and Ernie skit when they explore a pyramid.

The sound, the atmosphere, everything in the scene was pretty creepy. Now to go back through the thread and see if anyone else has mentioned it...

I remember when my dad showed me this movie as a kid, thinking I was old enough, but I couldn't finish this scene. Didn't end up finishing the movie until years later.

Oh god this. Nightmares for months.

I thought I was the only one that watched this movie.

I remember this old Tales from the Darkside episode in the 80's, had something to do with a curse if a family member dies on Halloween, you had to write all the family members names on rocks and the rocks had to remain untouched by human hands through All Saints Day. Well this kids grandmother dies (after she tells him and his sister this and helps him with the prep work). Well the boy and girl agree to leave the stones alone in the living room. Somehow they get scattered and the girl picks one up. It has the boy's name on it. For the duration of the show he keeps seeing a creature with red glowy eyes coming to kill him. It didn't end well and scared the absolute fuck out of me. I refuse to look it up

Wow first reply nailed it. I had nightmares for YEARS about looking out my bedroom window and seeing someone floating there.

Since people are posting non-movie moments too...

There used to be an old anime series that retold Grimm's Fairy Tales, and quite faithfully, really. Probably too faithful... Most of the time, they scared me really badly, but they were so well animated, acted, and written that I always wanted to keep watching. I had two or three VHS tapes of the series, and one of them had the story of Hansel and Gretel on it.
The witch in this show scared me so badly it wasn't funny.

She starts out harmless enough.

Then she starts to get scary...

I DON'T WANT TO EAT CANDY EVER AGAIN!

OH GOD, WHY?!

I always knew I was going to be freaked out, but I just loved it too much. Must have been all the good looking food.

As a little kid, I was flipping through channels once and came upon Nightmare on Elm Street on Cinemax right at the Johnny Depp bed scene. Thought I was gonna be traumatized for life.

Man I will never forget that scene... I must have been like 4 or 5 and it was night (back then my bed time was around 7-8ish). It was the weekend and I remember sneaking down the hall near the living room to see what everyone was watching (this was back when people still used VHS and I was still curious about things).

What I saw..... I'm not sure how I was able to sleep again lol (I'm not sure how I didn't bust out screaming... guess the Belt > Freddy Kruger... maybe).

Oh my god, I'm not the only one...

Great show but wtf with this scene? no nightmares, but almost.

I had forgotten how elaborate were death scenes in Freddy movies, looking at them they look terrible and goofy, but at those times... christ I couldn't sleep for days, a nightmare with Freddy is the worst kind. They could make a great psychological thriller using that dream theme and teenagers fears, too bad something like that is impossible to happen.

Jesus Christ almighty.

I almost didn't wanna do the google search to get the pic. Scary. As. Hell.

Edit: beaten I see. Regardless though.....

I should have posted a picture when I noted Captain EO.

Her claws came through the screen at you. For a kid in the 80's, it was scary shit.
I remember covering my eyes going into Captain EO when I was younger because of her.
