Quite possibly one of the most memorable, creepy instants of film. The utter lack of explanation and shocking appearance is really brilliant.

There is an explanation, mind you, but it still works without it.
What is the explanation behind this? I've asked around here before; suspecting that it was the first ever furry act that we all know today.

In Hook when they put one of the pirates inside a chest and throw in a huge ass spider. Goddamn it fuck that movie.
Wasn't that a big scorpion? The boo box.... BOOOO BOOOOOOO.
I can totally see how that can be scary.

Wow first reply nailed it. I had nightmares for YEARS about looking out my bedroom window and seeing someone floating there.

Still have. One of the creepiest images, having a pale face suddenly appearing at your bedroom window. Think about it next time your going to sleep.

Any time those demons showed up to carry someone presumably to hell in the movie Ghost scared me as a kid. The noises they made. Ugh.

Oh and I couldn't handle Luke getting his hand cut off in Empire Strikes Back until the 1997 rerelease and I was 12 by then.

Was going to post Melting Face from Raiders of the Lost Ark, but clearly that occurred to a lot of people already!

A less obvious one, and bear in mind I was very young (like 3 or 4):

Heffalumps and Woozles. I did not enjoy this part of the movie, what a creepy dream.

Oh, another good one:
Halloween III: Season of the Witch

I don't know why, but the stupid countdown song has been stuck in my head since this movie was new. Its one of those weird things I'll never forget.

"Two more days till Halloween, Halloween, Halloween" etc. The basic repeating keyboard note is creepy in itself, but the weird fucking images that pop up on the tv screens were always creepy to me, even now.

More specifically

That and The Skeksis scared the ever loving crap out of me when I was 8 watching it in the movie theater.
DarkCrystalSkeksis2.jpg

Those two didn't bother me that much. It was when that damn Fizzgig first popped out, barking mad with that wide, sharp teeth mouth of his. Always wince whent that part comes out.

Take a look at the first page. ;)

Oh, another good one:
Halloween III: Season of the Witch

This scene always bothered me when I was a kid. Most horror movies back then didn't kill children, but then this movie came along. The gruesome way this poor kid got killed scared the hell out of me when I was young, it still does. It doesn't help that snakes freak me out too.

Also, there was some movie where a class acted like they had been murdered in violent ways.
There was blood everywhere and one kid had his finger in a pencil sharpener.
I stopped watching it before they got up and said it was a joke, but I had nightmares about it for years.
Can't remember the movie, though.

Summer School. Classic.

Since people are posting non-movie moments too...

There used to be an old anime series that retold Grimm's Fairy Tales, and quite faithfully, really. Probably too faithful... Most of the time, they scared me really badly, but they were so well animated, acted, and written that I always wanted to keep watching. I had two or three VHS tapes of the series, and one of them had the story of Hansel and Gretel on it.
The witch in this show scared me so badly it wasn't funny.

She starts out harmless enough.

Then she starts to get scary...

I DON'T WANT TO EAT CANDY EVER AGAIN!

OH GOD, WHY?!

I always knew I was going to be freaked out, but I just loved it too much. Must have been all the good looking food.

I had a VHS of this too! I still remember, mine had The Old Woman in the Wood, The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes, and The Devil and his Grandmother.

This segment scared me as a kid: http://youtu.be/OUijJ5tMszc?t=5m15s
I mean seriously this is for little kids! Damn them.

a lot of fantastic ones have already been posted for those of us who grew up in the '80s. Well done, GAF.

Three off the top of my head:

twilight-zone-the-movie5.gif

Twilight Zone: The Movie was just creepy as shit most of the time (other than Spielberg's shitty entry), but the Nightmare at 20,000 ft segment made it very, very difficult to fly in a plane by a window seat at night for years.

Creepshow 2, The Raft segment. God, this one just disturbed the crap out of me. Never went swimming in any isolated ponds during summer break after watching that.

Evil Dead 2; when Ash's girlfriend pops up from the grave and starts dancing, along with the music and the bizarre way she just hops into the darkness. Still creeps me out.

That shifting polygonal computer and the psychedelic scenes from Demon Seed, I think gave me actual nightmares when I was a kid.
