SCEA: PS3 Supply May Be "Tight" In Coming Months

Finally got mine at Toysrus. Guy said he hadn't gotten any shipments in a week or two but got 7 today (Monday). Said demand wasn't any higher than usual...just lack of shipments from Sony. Anecdotal evidence but there you go.

Obviously I know this isn't what they're doing, but it'd be great if they got Gem/Arc/Whatever out around this time, and the only available SKU during the GoW3/FFXIII/GT5 season was a motion dection bundled one. I say "great", I mean for them, because it's just about the only way I think they'll get a sizable install base, by thrusting it on people largely against their will.

Whatever the reason for the shortage, it's still a big fuckup. If I decide to buy an iphone today, I go ahead and buy it. If I decide to buy a PS3 or Wii today, I have to work to find one, and may not be successful.

Your customers should never have to make an effort to give you money.

I keep on hearing that Wii supply is tight at the moment in the US.

In the EU Wii hardware is on free supply, what is going on?

So I guess this is related: http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/03/10/ps3_model_change/

A retailer is reporting today that Sony will be giving the PlayStation 3 a slight weight reduction from its current 3.2kg to 3.0kg. This will be accompanied by a change in model number from CECH-2000A to CECH-2100A.

It's presumable that, aside from just the weight, something else has changed inside the system. Sony often makes minor hardware adjustments, changing the model number in the process.

The retailer expects Sony's PS3 shipments to switch to the new version in March.

This retailer also reports that Sony will be ending shipments on its Bright Yellow PSP-3000 model. The retailer notes that this was the least popular of the PSP-3000 systems at his shop.

I guess it's just more security orfor the hypervisor or something , since the old one got hacked.

It's been speculated in the past (but not confirmed) that Nintendo gives first preference to the regions where hardware gives them the best exchange rates. It sounds shitty but it does make business sense when supplies are low to sell that supply to the areas that will make you the most money.

If that report is right, sounds like Sony had a new SKU planned, figured shipments over Xmas would last longer into the new year to neatly meet up with the intro of this new SKU, but that didn't happen, obviously. Interesting that the first iteration of slim was so short lived though.

No, the system clock lost a date or two.

That could be a supporting explanation.

What's making people think the us is getting a God of War 3 bundle? Everytime they release a new bundle they announce it a month in advance or so. I can't see sony just throwing a new bundle out there with zero consumer awareness.

I would assume it comes at least a month or two after GOW3's release. If it happens at all.

I said for the US. I haven't seen any sort of announcement or pre orders being taken for them in America. If there is conclusive evidence please show me so I can cancel my slim order from Dell.

Thats what I would think too, but that would do me no good anyways. It's not like the people buying a PS3 for GoW3 have to have the game day and date, so this makes sense to me.

I figured as much I forgot if I posted "in the US" and checked and it looked goofy to me too :lol. Sorry I was using my phone, I get lazy when I'm using a mobile browser.

From the looks of it, it doesn't have any uniqe stylings ala the MGS4 console which is dissapointing.

Except sony is going to meet their sales forecast almost exactly so we know this can't be true.

Also it's not as if sony is just posting huge numbers. Their selling what, 120,000 a month or so in Japan and less than 300,000 a month in the US. Surely those sort of numbers shouldn't cause shortages.

I've said this in other threads but this isn't a situation like the wii where demand was just so incredible they couldn't keep up.

Do your homework before opening your mouth to speak.

Sony underestimated the potential demand for their product;as you can see from Activision´s forecast,PS3 Slim sales far exceeded anyone's expectations.

He did his homework. As of the last quarter of financial reports, Sony were bang on target to ship what they forecast they would ship for the year.

Depending on how badly this issue affected them they may miss this quarter's target though. (They needed to hit 2.2m, but it's clear shipments were down, at least for January and February).

That they may have sold through their increased shipments faster than they expected is another story... but even so, take a look at the numbers you posted and you'll see that they're only a couple of hundred thousand above where they were last year... not millions.

Edit - Unless Europe is doing crazy things of course. :)

March 15, 2010 - Sony is making sure there will be plenty of PlayStation 3 consoles available in North America during one of its biggest quarters of the year.

John Koller, SCEA's Director of Hardware and Marketing, told IGN the company is readying PS3 supply for important game releases, including tomorrow's God of War III launch.

"We have shipments flowing in now," said Koller. "As you know we are in tight supply, and the reason for that is because demand is outstripping even what we thought it would after the price drop."

"We have a lot of big launches coming up that we need to make sure we're in really strong supply for, and we will be for when God of War III launches," he added. "We'll be in a tight situation for a little while, but for big launches, and particularly for the titles coming in the back half of the year, we'll be fine."

Recent PS3 supply constraints have put a damper on sales since this past holiday. February's NPD revealed Sony sold 360,000 consoles, good for third place. With a full month of Heavy Rain sales, and the releases of Final Fantasy XIII and God of War, March NPD data should prove positive for Sony if there is ample supply.

My target store has had plenty of PS3s in stock for last few weeks. We dwindle down to like 1 left and resupply quickly.

Tomorrow will be interesting to see if they sell alot.

Shit I'm buying a new ps3 today. Should I not? I don't care about hdd space because I have a 500gb ps3 compatible drive I was gonna put in regardless.
