wow

journalism

Here's the screenshot of said thread on /b/, where OP says he was going to kill himself today and make it to the news, I'll just post the link, since there's a picture of the Columbine Massacre and some people might not want to see it.

Anyway, the link

Edit: There are dead bodies on the link, a picture of the Columbine Massacre that's NSFW.

This is real?

And as with every tragedy, regardless of scale, Facebook proves to be a direct hook into the vein of the insipid, egomanical cunts who insist on being first to create either a) the hateful, slandering page for the perpetrator, or b) the memorial page for the victims, without having any tangible relationship to either of the subjects in question.

Disgusting, though painfully unsurprising, behaviour from the media.

Really, anyone who is trying to start any other discussion other than "man that's so terrible, condolences to the victims/families/etc", whether it be starting some uncaring social network following (positive or negative), or thinking 2 seconds after reading "boy I wonder what the socio-political fallout will be here"... they all make me feel nauseous.

That goes for the media and the "public".

People will search for who or what to blame. People will spend hours digging into the background of the killer and making someone who was a nobody into a somebody, even if that somebody is a monster. The media is doing exactly the wrong thing.

What needs to happen is we and the media need to bury his name, he should be remembered as little, and a coward, and be completely forgotten, otherwise he gets what he wants.
Just the abstract from this paper shows the change that can happen if people and the media change how they react to particular situations.

Here's a forensic psychologist on how help prevent this behavior.

Then can you explain how all these national outlets shit the bed?
As an Editor, you're making decisions on coverage based on:
A. Is this newsworthy and will it provide a fuller picture for my audience?
B. Am I reasonably sure that this is accurate?

These are independently decisions happening in every newsroom - NBC, CBS, Fox News, Huff Po, etc. aren't in some cabal where they decide to run the exact same story. Each newsroom had an independent reason as to why they decided to run that picture.

It can totally be true that they're running it on incorrect information, but it's sourced from at least somebody that tangentially knows real information.

If you were a producer on NBC News and printed out somebody's Facebook page just saying, "this is a guy's name," then you'd be shamed beyond all reason. You'd get your ass fired for just copycatting without confirming through whatever the Exec. Producer's criteria is for certainty. If you're a national outlet, you have a legal team making the final call on some stories.

[Updated at 3:01 p.m. ET] The principal and guidance counselor at Sandy Hook Elementary School were both killed during the shooting, according to a witness that spoke to CNN.

This is just god damn terrible. Poor kids.

And Jesus H Christ, what happens to journalism? Time like this I'm even more glad to have non-generic name.

Be cause of the second amendment.

Ive heard canda is nice. Wonder how hard it would be to immigrate

Kind of a naive statement. You think if Guns were illegal people wouldn't be able to get them? Quit being ignorant. Gun Control will keep people like you and I from owning guns because we do the reasonable thing and abide by the laws. Lawbreakers and Murderers won't change for laws.

Same. There will be plenty of time to blame guns and the media and bash america for being the cause of this tragedy. Now is not that time.

Some people are addicted to that kind of thing. I've always been very distrustful of anyone trying to latch onto tragedies like that. Family, friends, colleagues... they're the people whose grief is real. I find it almost offensive when people go over the top with their "sympathy".

I can't believe we're still getting unsubstantiated twitter and FB links. Stop! We will know in the next few hours when official information is released from the police. Fuck.

Fucking 4chan

what a god damn cesspool of a site. The lowest of the low.

Yet I see the meme's that are created there first being used all over neogaf and rest of the internet. /b/ can be a cesspool and it is 99% of the time, but don't label the entire website because of posts like that. /v/ is awesome. /fit/ is awesome.
