It really seems like the only people doing their job right are the CT police. Seriously media fucked up the name and plastered wrong guys fb photo all over the place up until just a few minutes ago. At least the police are confirming all the facts.

media can't wait for the briefings so now we get all this misinformation

I'd rather they talk about God. If we can talk about God, we can talk about mental health, we can talk about a culture of violence, we can talk about guns. Let's put everything on the table.

That would be the best thing to do, because as it stands now.....our society is fucked up.

Someone mentioned the mental health issues should be a talking point after these and I'd have to agree. The fact that these people are generally isolated and have no social support systems seems to play a large part in their psychological state leading up to the killings. The stigma attached to mental health is something that really needs to be addressed so more people seek help or are sent for help.

Yes. Guns were the facilitator here and should definitely be discussed but it was not the cause for these actions. We are so quick to call these people monsters and evil but we really should do a better job of trying to understand why the hell this happens on a mental and societal level and how we can prevent this by other means other then just having less guns around(which I agree with).

What the fuck, media fucked this one up, poor brother of killer to find out through Facebook poor families fucking crazy

I think another problem besides the media is their source, if its someone 'anonymous' that is part of the investigation then there was a serious breach of conduct within the investigation that should be accounted for. Its common procedure to withhold the name of the assailant until 1) they have contacted all parties involved (including family of the possible killer) and 2) are absolutely, positively sure it is who they think it is. I'm guessing someone in the investigation heard the the name of the ID and reported to local affiliates who ran with the story only to find out the killer stole the ID from the brother afterwards and by then the damage was done. Still investigation is not done and I don't think we will get a true full grasp of the picture till later tonight or weeks/months from now. Shit changes every second because of these 'anonymous' sources and 24/7 news agencies both on cable and online.

Okay. I fail to see the link between religiosity in schools and a mass murderer that went on a rampage in a kindergarden classroom.
Because maybe you're not that religious? People associate the rise of secularism with the decline of morality in the public sphere. This is what many honestly believe, and its also a tool used by ideologues. We'll see far more of this kind of thing from many different avenues. Its how people and society processes things.

Again, I'm not saying its right, but we're a large society with many different perspectives, and that is one that I'd think is rather common in this country.

I'd love to see everything put on the table but let's face it, they're only going to put what's advantageous to them on the table. You're not going to see Huckabee talk about mental health or gun control, he's only going to pump the religious aspects and if he gets questioned about anything else he'll bring it back to God somehow.

Oh yeah, all over my facebook people are saying how this is all cause God isn't allowed in schools anymore and that if the teachers were armed like they were in Isreal this wouldn't have happened.

Because of course, an armed teacher would have executed a perfect fucking headshot before anyone could be killed. And not, you know, turned the entire school into a panic of gunshots that devolved into a meat grinder. Nope.

for fucks sake, Huckabee is on Fox saying its because we have systematically removed god from schools

had a friend post that this is why he is religious. lack of god in people's hearts and bla bla bla. told him you worship an omnipotent being that just let 20 children be murdered as punishment.

My god, 27+ dead? One person can do way, way too much damage. Who the fuck kills kids. Can't even imagine what those parents are going through. Just fucking senseless, I feel so...mad, and helpless. How do you even stop something like this?

Somehow I think this is even worse that its his actual brother, and not someone random with the same name.

You not only get your face blasted on national "journalistic" TV, but then come to find out, its your brother that did the shooting, and this is how you find that out?

Goddamn. Just a total media failure on this. The fact that I have already heard 3 times how "we are reporting as accurate as we can" tells you how big of a fuck up this is.

What about media control? Can that be discussed in this topic?

I went to a Christian private school my entire life from K-3 onward. I grew up in a Presbyterian household. I am a Christian to this day.

I fail to see a link between immorality and lack of religiosity in public or private experiences.

I do, however, see a huge link between hypocrisy and religiosity.

So many details about facebook Ryan Lanza and the "shooter" matched even at the time of initial reporting that it was extremely unlikely that they were two different people. Adam likely had his brothers id, and that's indeed what facebook Ryan Lanza himself suggested could be the case. So while the initial reporting was premature and shouldn't have been done, there was more to it than just media googling the name and running with the first person they found who happened to live in CT.

This is the absolute most horrible saga I can remember.

I grew up about 15-20 minutes from Newtown. Only been there a few times, but it's such a nice area. Terrible that something so tragic happened there and basically will define that town forever now. The kids and people killed, and their families... can't even imagine it. Right during the holidays too. Damn, condolences to everyone.

Then, to make everything worse, this Ryan Landa guy gets incorrectly fingered for the murder by a media perfectly willing to sacrifice journalistic integrity and just any sort of decency whatsoever in order for a chance to break the identity of the killer. Now it turns out he may be the killer's brother and had his own family killed.

I can't remember anything this fucked up. This has affected me more than any news story in quite a while, possibly ever.

Sometimes you want a strong leader and sometimes you just want to be reminded they are people too with children of their own.

That's not a failing, believe me. But I'm not talking about your outlook, or mine. Just saying we'll see plenty more of this, and that much of it will be honest and heartfelt, and not just a prop, although we'll see plenty of that too. Tragedy brings a lot to the surface.

Exactly this.

Unfortunately, mass murderers are horribly understudied when compared to serial murderers so we don't have a whole lot of information on them. Generally, though there is evidence of a long periods of despair or depression and these people usually feel like their lives are failures and there is little to no chance for them improving.

Don't we have someone on NeoGAF that threatened to run over and kill people with his car? I think he posted it in the Depression thread too.

CNN said:
Separately, another adult was found dead in a second location in Newtown, Vance said. A senior law enforcement official familiar with the investigation told CNN the suspect's brother was found dead at a residence.

So is it the father or brother found dead?

Yeah, and I can understand that. I said in the last thread that with suicide, for example, people are thinking irrationally. The world will be better without them, no one will miss them, etc. None of which are true.

With mass murders of children, the rationale is...

?

Without knowing any further information the only thing we can really draw from this is that they were just collateral since his mother worked there.

The wording is confusing the shit out of me. When people say 'in custody' people automatically assumes they're being arrested for something.

Yeah, he's likely in custody for questioning about the situation. There could be the additional precaution that, since family members were being targeted, he could be in some danger as well.

ignorance like this needs to be stomped out.

i truely feel for all involved :(

Wow just wow this is so fucking sickening. Just 2 days ago my school (Cal State University, Fullerton) In Cali was on lockdown for hours due to a gunman hiding somewhere on the campus. And then this shit happens. Man my heart goes out to all those families, children etc. involved :(

Good on you..and no I'm not being sarcastic..fuck that friend of yours.

The god angle in this case has to be one of the biggest propaganda driven shit I have heard in ages

I am surprised CNN hasn't brought in Ja Rule to make sense of all of this right now.

Might actually make more sense than that dumbass douche Dr.Drew.

@WTNH: Police confirm Nancy Lanza, the suspect's mother, was found dead in her Newtown home. Adam Lanza, 20, is the suspect.

Wait so the mother was shot at her home and not at the school?
