Screen protectors - Y/N?

No. My phone is pushing four years old (iPhone 4) and the screen still looks fine with no more care than an occasional clean with a microfibre cloth. Unless you've got the superpower that allows you to put a screen protector on straight without any bubbles or dust underneath, they look like ass.

Eh it's really not that hard. But then again I feel like alot of people don't take their time when they put their screen protectors on.

Just hate misinformation that's all.

Here's an idea. Spend the $3, put it on, try it for 6 months. If everything looks fine take it off and never use it again. Win/win.
If you're clumsy and won't take care of your device, sure get a piece of crap thin layer of plastic over your screen.

If you're a responsible adult that can take care of shit without fucking it up, then you don't need it.

Does that make you happy?

What do you think of this:

The problem is that most people never change their protectors when they get scratched/torn, etc. So in the end they have a perfectly good screen behind a protector full of scratches. Plus the actions that damaged the protector most likely wouldn't have done anything to the screen itself.

So they will have those protector-damages in front of them all the time, while keeping the screen clean for the next person who owns it (or the junkyard in some cases).

I rather prefer to have a clean screen for myself instead for the used-buyer.

Once you protected your phone and its nearing its lifecycle then what? Resale value wouldn't be a lot and you have a perfectly good screen for a dying device.

There's no misinformation in me stating that nothing has happened to the screens of my phones in six years.

I had a screen protector on the original iPhone because it was expensive and I thought I needed it. Took it off a few months later and never put it back on. Why make the screen feel bad and reduce the contrast for no gain?

I've gone through multiple phones without anything happening to the screens. My current iPhone 5 got run over by a car and the entire back is dented and cracked, but the screen is perfect.

You've really fallen for the Gorilla Glass marketing huh? I've seen so many scratched (not broken) iPhone and android phone screens it hurts. A decent one that's not "tacky" may in itself get scratched, but the screen itself won't.

Pay the $3 fucking dollars and protect your $150 screen.

I've only had two iPhones since the 3G was released and I've never had a scratch. No case either.

I like using them, but based on topics in the past, most people seem to say no. I'd like to think the protectors contributed to getting "like new" trade in status on me and my wife's 2.5 year old 4s, but I don't know. It seems like I can't avoid getting permanent hairline scratches without them.

I don't use it but if I were, I'd only use the tempered glass ones.

I've used cheap ones before and there's this friction that I don't like about them.

Accidents happen.

Yeah most people don't change them when they get scratched up. So change them.

As for resale value, see how much the price of an iPhone drops when its screen is scratched. They usually have good resale ability for many years after the original owner.

And, again, I've sold all my devices at top market value as mint devices without any issue, always covering my next device.

Rather than get a screen protector, get a slim-line case that has a small (2-3 mm) lip raised around the front edge of the phone. This way you can set it down on a counter top or surface face down and rest assured it's not completely face down glass-to-surface contact. That keeps most of your scratching situations from happening. I worked for VZW for 7 years without a screen protector on my phone and I've never had a scratch on a screen.

With Sapphire and Gorilla Glass nowadays, it's becoming more and more difficult to scratch your device.

Most people with screen protectors don't even put them on properly, so they're peeling at the corners and full of unsightly bubbles. Then there's the rainbow effect over the entire screen. And the way finger oils and gunk sticks to the film. And the slight to large reduction in brightness depending on how shitty your protector is.

But we wouldn't want an unsightly scratch or two on our Gorilla Glass 3 screens. That could affect the viewing experience.

If you're responsible and take care of your devices then a screen protector isn't necessary. I've owned several iPhone and iPad models, as well as most handheld game consoles, and none of the screens have even a slight scratch on them. There's no way I'd ever use a protector and have to deal with an unresponsive touch screen.

Bought 3 cheap ones on ebay for my smartphone and used them up over time. Then I read a thread like this where everyone claimed gorilla glass is unscratcheable so I went without for less than a week before getting two scratches on the screen on the same day. From keeping the phone by itself in my suit pant pocket. Maybe it was a piece of sand, or a crumb, or dust or who cares.

Every phone since then I have had protectors on with no incidents. Just replace it regularly and don't look back.

Do they protect against screen cracking? My sister swears that they do and constantly jumps into conversations about new phones to tell people they need a screen protector.

I don't believe her and have had my screen unprotected for years.

Haha, no.

Yes. My Galaxy Note 3 has one of those Ghost Armor screen protectors and it has been a life saver in a couple situations. Would never think of not getting a screen protector on any phone I have. I'm VERY careful with my phone as well but it's nice to have added protection.

I have an iPhone 5s that I plan on selling when the 6 comes out so I've had a screen protector on it since day one. No scratches should give it a bit more value.

Hell no. Never gotten a scratch on any of my iphones, and if it ever got too beat up it's not even 50 dollars for me to replace it. I'd recommend it for phones with larger screens though. My girlfriend's Nexus 5 is a scratch magnet and that screen ain't cheap

Anything with a glass screen doesn't really need a protector. You'd shatter it before you'd scratch it, unless you REALLY scratch it good, in which case I'm not sure the protector would completely save it anyway.

Even on devices with plastic screens, like a Vita, I don't use one and opt to just buy a case for it for when I'm not using it instead. I get why someone would use one in this situation if they were putting it in a backpack or something though (I'd be too nervous to do that without a case regardless, though).

I've never scratched a screen on a device I've owned in my life.

Using a tempered glass protector on my HTC One.
Not going back to plastic.

Only use them on my phone and Vita, since they see the most travel to and fro.

This. Glass shields are amazing shit - much much thicker than plastic protectors, but pretty much feels the same as a naked screen - same clarity, responsiveness, and same oleophobic coating.

Used mine for 6 months now and not one scratch on it, just a tiny chip on one corner because I've dropped my 5s quite a few times. If it were a plastic shield, I'd have got scratches on it within a week.

I don't know about other phones, but using it naked without worry is bullshit. I used my 4s naked for two weeks and already got one long micro scratch on it.

Never. My Nexus 4 is approaching 2 years old and is scratch free aside from some very small ones on the back. Only use a bumper and regularly carry it in my pocket. Thinking about ditching the bumper too, but I tend to toss it onto tables and whatnot since the bumper catches all of that abrasion.

Nope. I have a gorilla glass phone and kept my keys and change in a separate pocket just in case, and my naked phone's screen is still flawless after a couple of years.

I haven't used a screen protector since my Blackberry around 4 years ago and I've never had a scratch on my phones' screens since then.

I had both the Samsung Infuse (basically a lower speced Galaxy 2 or maybe 3) and my current Note 2, never tried to put a screen on them (I can never put them on without getting a spec of dust or a bubble under them anyways) and only gave them small cases.

I take good care of my stuff and have never had any major drops and even with about 2 years of use on each of them the screen still had no scratches. I remember screens scratching like CRAZY just 5-10 years ago with portable media players like my Creative Zen Vision M and flip/candybar phones back in the day, but screens now are pretty amazing.

It's actually astonishingly easy- one doesn't even need to use scotch tape to remove dust too.

I stopped at the HTC One and never looked back. It's completely unnecessary anymore with Gorilla Glass 2 and the probable introduction of Apple's sapphire screens.

I used to use one (and a rubber case) but I got rid of it because they make the screen look dirty/scratched. I've enjoyed my phones much more since getting rid of screen protectors/cases. Also got rid of them (screen protectors) on our 3DS's earlier this year and the bottom screen on those look a lot better, too.

The rest of my family uses screen protectors on everything, and they just make the screen less responsive and look and feel like shit. Both my old phones were used heavily for 2 years and has one tiny scratch only visible when the screen is off. Their screen protectors are covered in scratches.

The only exception is the DS/3DS. You may want a screen protector for using a stylus on that cheap screen quality.

Always have a screen protector on my phone. I am on a film shoot at university I had my phone on charge and some jackass pulled the 4-bar charger and my phone was dragged face down across the floor.. Protector off and perfect just threw another one on.

Every phone I've had since the Optimus has had a screen protector and case before I even used it. I like my phones to be in immaculate condition for when I resell them.

Yes...But I put it there because it feels better for when I'm using the touchscreen. I prefer the screen to be a bit slippery, felt like I'm lighting a fire with my thumb without them.

Isn't it the other way around? More friction on the plastic so more heat?

Usually I don't use one because I don't have problems scratching phones. The only phones screens I ever scratched were because I literally dropped it on top of a pointy rock or sidewalk and stepped on it.

I get them. Only the high quality protectors. I have no idea if something might happen so I have it on.......just in case.

I use a screen protector but no case. I wouldn't recommend a fingerprint proof protector however. I had one and it made the screen look really really shitty. I switched it with a regular one and haven't looked back since.

I have never seen a good screen protector. Not that I have been looking very carefully, but they always seem to affect the brightness of the screen, and feel plasticky. And my phone with its 5 inch screen is too big to fit the same pocket I have my keys in, so the biggest risk is avoided right there...

I always use a screen protector. Then I usually remove it during the last 6 months of my contract. Case too.

My current phone is now severely beat up. I do think these things help.
