Screen protectors - Y/N?

Nope, I go totally bareback. No screen protector, no case, just a beautiful naked HTC One M8. I stopped using that stuff two phones ago.

I'm a little OCD on all my devices as far as screen protectors go. As soon as I take the thing out of the box, I immediately put on a protector. My smartphone, 3DS, PSP, Wii U Gamepad, etc all have screen protectors on them. They probably don't really help that much, but it makes me feel better, lol.

Screen protectors are less resilient than the screens themselves. I've dropped my phone so many times on a bunch of different surfaces and all the scratches have been able to be buffed out easy to looking like new with only a couple of minutes of elbow grease.

I go completely naked. I've only had an issue with one phone, the HTC One. I dropped it from about 3 feet on cement and spider webbed the whole screen. :( I was very sad but I still don't do a case or screen film. The screen will always get eventual small scratches that are noticeable in certain light but it's worth not having a larger/hideous phone.

I used to use screen protectors, but they're far more irritating than the risk of scratching your screen which is really the only thing they have a chance of preventing. The only screen I've ever scratched was that of my current phone when it slid off my lap onto a gravel and glass covered floor and slid around. I've never been able to scratch any of my previous iPhones.

I don't run a case either, it destroys the aesthetics of the device and replacing a screen is a relatively inexpensive and easy fix. IIRC, a 5S screen is about $50 shipped and it takes about five minutes to swap out.

Unless you live in the desert, then I don't think you need a screen protector.

I only put very light cases on my phones since I feel that if anything's going to scratch, it'll be the backside that's not protected by Gorilla Glass.

Absolutely not.

I have a Moto G naked. I've dropped it a few times at the gym and it has some small dents on the edges, but the screen is perfect.

What's the point of having a high resolution screen if you have a shitty piece of plastic over it.

On a phone, no. A decent case does the trick.

Generally I'd say no, but I have recently put one on the back screen of my new camera. Just to safeguard its value should I choose to sell in the future.

Nope, don't use one. Both my Droid 4 and current Lumia Icon have Gorilla Glass and neither has had a problem so far. I did actually put a case on my Lumia Icon, though, since it looks so good and I don't want the body scratched while I'm at work. I typically have some kind of stuff on my hands from working so I figured I'd get a case so I don't scratch it up. The screen does fine though.

I only use them on cameras nowadays, since the screen is always exposed and if I carry it around by the neckstrap the screen can rub against a zipper or something.

Phone? Nope, stopped a while ago. I use cases for my phone ("wallet" style), which protects the screen anyway.

Yes for the 3/DS...that console will get scratched if you don't put a screen protector on it. The 3DS especially, since when it's closed the different sized screens tend to rub against each other. What a pain.

It doesn't really seem necessary on phones. I like the one on my tablet though, if only because it has a matte finish that is nicer to use and makes me not notice fingerprints.

Yes. There are screen protectors on my family's (including extended) phones, the DS's I gave to my cousins, my 3DS, my Wii U Gamepad and eventually a Vita.

I should've got one for my Wii U.

The scratch on my gamepad still bugs the fuck out of me.

Might get one for the 3DS since like the Wii U the screens are cheap as shit.

tempered glass screen protector. feels as good or better than naked (especially for vita). Saved my phone a few weeks ago where it fell flat on concrete, which just only chipped a bit. I replaced it the next day for $15.

I used to use them, they weren't worth the hassle. Doesn't seem to matter on any of my phones.

My Vita, however, could probably have used one as the screen covering seems to be made of the world's softest plastic.

Just a good case. Pretty happy with my tablet, the outermost layer is designed to be scratched, they wouldn't make it a touch screen otherwise.

Using a tempered glass protector on my HTC One.
Not going back to plastic.

Only use them on my phone and Vita, since they see the most travel to and fro.

Glass screen protectors 4 life.

The feeling of glass and added scratch protection (and even a degree of impact protection).

I don't use it but if I were, I'd only use the tempered glass ones.

I've used cheap ones before and there's this friction that I don't like about them.

This. Glass shields are amazing shit - much much thicker than plastic protectors, but pretty much feels the same as a naked screen - same clarity, responsiveness, and same oleophobic coating.

Used mine for 6 months now and not one scratch on it, just a tiny chip on one corner because I've dropped my 5s quite a few times. If it were a plastic shield, I'd have got scratches on it within a week.

I don't know about other phones, but using it naked without worry is bullshit. I used my 4s naked for two weeks and already got one long micro scratch on it.

This, I have a glass screen protector on my S5 and it's fantastic, some screen protectors feel sticky and they are difficult to wipe clean.

I used to use one. I dont anymore. I use a flipcase though for my phone, so it is all the protection that I need. If I do you a screen protector, I would use one of the glass screen protectors. They feel just like the actual screen.

Only downside is that they are significantly more expensive than the traditional screen protectors.

Listen to these people, they are right. I used to absolutely hate screen protectors because they're a hassle to apply and ruin the feel of the touchscreen and so I ended up giving up and not using screen protectors at all by the end of my GSII's life. I got a HTC One and a Spigen GLAS.t screen protector, never looked back. Yes it's expensive, and yes it's thicker, but it protects against scratches, feels great, and gives more protection than a normal screen protector. I dropped my phone on tile, face down and it hit the corner of the glass. It bent the nearby aluminum and would've shattered the screen but my tempered glass protector was in the way. It cracked a bit but was otherwise fine.

TL;DR Get tempered glass no matter what.

Screen protectors are practically a scam nowadays, the plastic ones anyway. They used to serve a purpose back when things like iPods used to get scratched to shit if you put them in the same pocket with your keys, but now virtually every electronic device with a screen has some kind of glass to protect against scratched, whether its gorilla glass or something else. It's sad so many people waste money on this garbage when there's no point anymore. I've had my phone naked for about three years and it has zero scratches.

Cases are almost as bad. I recall hearing someone that did a test that concluded that most cases do nothing to protect your phone. The only thing they do is make your phone look uglier, which is a sin considering how good some phones look.

So yeah, go naked.

Lord no. Most people mess them up when applying them and they look awful and cheap. I've had my iPhone naked since October 2011 and not a scratch on the screen. I don't even have a case or wallet for it.

I swear by my ArmorShield wet protector.

I used to use those shitty plastic dry install protectors but those were garbage. I finally decided to get an ArmorShield protector (wet install) and I couldn't be happier. You can scratch this thing, and a few hours later it will go away. I swear I've dropped this phone so many times in ways that should have cracked the glass, but the wet application has held it together.

TlDR don't buy those dry static install protectors. Get a wet apply one like armorshield or zagg.

I'm using the one I got with my Z2, and I'm glad I am. Dropped it about 3 weeks after I got it, and the protector took all of the damage. One pretty deep scratch and a couple of smaller ones.

My screen protectors always get scratched to shit, so I find it hard to believe they "do nothing". For how little they cost, I don't care.

The vast majority of screen protectors do not hold up nearly as well as the bare screen does. Something that scratches your protector wouldn't necessarily damage the screen.

My wife and I got the same phones (HTC mytouch 4g), I used a screen protector for 2 years, she did not. I removed my protector and our screens looked identical, zero scratches.

So, no they are not needed. Cases are needed, especially as phones get thinner. My new LG G2 just wants to leap from my hands.

I've never needed one.

I also say cases aren't needed. Just be careful with your phone.

I used to use invisible shield back in the day, but now i don't like to use any. I like feeling the glass under my fingertip and would rather keep that then go to the feel of plastic or the sort of rubbery feel of screen protectors.

Never cared about protection from drops. Only reason I use a Spigen neo hybrid case on my GS5 is for better grip and to protect the chrome sides from being scratched.

I always use a screen protector, simply because I hate scratches, although sometimes they do muddy up the clarity of the screen. Am thinking of just getting rid of it, since the feel of glass is a lot more pleasant than the plastic or rubber.

So what do you say GAF? Are screen protectors worth it? Do you put a screen protector on your devices? Why/Why not?

I haven't used a screen protector on my phone since the original iphone, no issues. I don't even use a case, I just put a sticker on the back of the phone so it doesn't slide around on a table. I've also never shattered or lost a phone

For the first four months of my phones new life it had a screen protector. It got torn for some reason in my pocket. I thought about getting a new one but I like the feel better of the natural screen and my screen hasn't incurred any scratches. The screen protector has been off from nearly three months and I would happily avoid replacing it.

Also my phone has an overheating problem so I think losing the screen protector has kinda helped with that. Losing the case helped most with the overheating though.

Me to, I also have my nexus 4 in a case, but that's mostly due to the back being fragile a fuck.

I always felt like they were more trouble than they're worth, at least for me. I just keep my keys and other stuff in my right pocket and my phone in my left.

Havnt had a phone scratch in a long time. They are pointless. Same goes for cases. What do a few scratches on the back matter.

Has it got a case is it scratched asked when selling iphone. No but I can put a case on it so all your friends think it isnt scratched underneath.

Current smartphones have such a nice sheen to them that it's a shame to put a case and/or screen protector on them. I love the way my Lumia 928 looks naked.

But, here's some advice, take care of your phone.

That shit costs $600 so treat it like it does. What helped me is that I designated my right pocket to be my cellphone pocket. Keys and everything else goes on the left.

If you're going to dump it in a bag or purse then you should protect your phone.

Edit: I never understood why people cover their phone for resale value when most people will get around $100 for their phone. You're buying someone and babysitting it so that when the next person uses it, it looks nice. Fuck that, enjoy it now.

I use a rubber stylus on my nexus 7 only and when it's in transit/not in use I cover it in a large microfiber eyeglass cloth. Seems okay so far after a year or so of use.

I'll occasionally put a Zagg shield on my devices, but I keep buying devices that they don't have a cut for. Gorilla Glass does well, but it's not infallible. I will never use a case, though. Hard to enjoy the device's design like that - also, devices were meant to be used, and I don't mind mine looking used.

OK, here's what I have to ask people who use screen protectors:

What are you protecting you screen for?

Is your smooth, shiny glass screen going to sit behind a film of grungy plastic its entire lifespan, never, ever actually being touched by you?

What is the point, then?

You really have to ask the function of a screen protector? And some of you guys must have used some REALLY shitty ones the way they're being described in this thread. I have the Spigen ultra crystal on my N4 and can't even tell it's there unless I look at the very edges of the bezel. Grungy plastic...huh?

No protector, no case. I'm on the jump plan. I just get a new phone about once a year. I've never had a problem with scratching my phones anyway. Water is usually what does my phones in if anything.

I have one on my N4 (well, I used the one that comes on the phone for months, then replaced it with a shit one that has been scratched up by what I can only assume is a pocket zip. I need to get a new, higher quality one.

My N7 doesn't have one at the moment, and although I'm less likely to need one as it never enters a pocket or leaves my house, I'm still thinking about it. I might get a flip case for it though.

why would you ruin your phone by adding a screen protector/case?
Why would you risk ruining your phone by not adding a screen protector/case?

I don't like them.
Screen protectors tend to scratch up pretty easily, I don't see the point in protecting your (much more scratch resistant) screen by having an ugly scratched up protector on top of it.
And its' not like phones have much resale value.
