Screw it! I finally bought a Wii U

I could use some help GAF.

I want to buy the Wii U Mario Kart Bundle right now, but I don't want Nintendo to announce a system redesign or something at E3 and make me regret my purchase.

Should I wait? I'm in the "hope for gamepad less wii u or redesigned smaller size gamepad" crowd.

They would not be so stupid as to launch their biggest game to date with a bundle and then announce a redesign at E3 barely a few weeks later.

And forget about "Gamepad-less Wii U". It was never on the cards, and Iwata recently said they will be focusing on it even more. It will be needed for their NFP/NFC push.

I'm waiting for e3 too, but in my case my finals end on the day of the digital event so I won't have any free time till then. I don't feel right buying a console before e3, even if the odds of Nintendo announcing a revision or price cut is really slim.

Its only around a week and a half, if you can wait that much you might as well. But if you really want to play mk8 now go for it. I don't see anything really happening tbh.

That crowds still waiting for the dual analogue 3DS hardware revision that was definitely going to happen after they announced the circle pad pro.

just saying.
Haha ice cold

Bought a PS4 and while I enjoy it, there's pretty much NOTHING out yet. I'm trying my damnedest to be patient and wait for E3, but all the MK8 hype is nearly pushing me over the edge. For $260, I could get a brand new Deluxe, add to that trading in my 3DS for the cost of MK8 (+ WWHD) and a Pro controller and this becomes very very tempting. GOD DAMN YOU GAF MY WALLET AM CRY!

As an owner of both, my PS4 hasn't seen 1/10th the use my Wii U has since November. Don't torture yourself, the PS4 release sched is kind of a wasteland until 2015, and tons of awesome U games can be had cheap used.

Lego City Undercover is still one of the top 3 games on the console. Its biggest downfall is its loading times and lack of co-op but taking it as the single player game it is, it is a wonderful experience. Also that Gamepad intergration is a thing of beauty with the pop up videos and story exposition.

I'll second this. Even if you normally don't get into Lego Games I'd suggest giving this game a look. It has a ton of charm and definitely deserves consideration from those looking through the Wii U's backlog for possible games they missed.

Quoted for truth. Sleeper hit IMO.

my Lego City antennas buzzed, meaning Lego City has been recommended to someone in the world. I can just say, whoever has a WiiU, BUY THAT GAME

You're right, Nintendo never does what customers ask for.
That's the worst knock on Nintendo yet.

Ms makes their hardware work with revisions
Sony cost reduces
Nintendo adds functions

Nintendo does what customers ask for with their hardware more than anyone else. Specifically with handhelds.

I'd like to pick one up but they're still too expensive considering they're the weakest next gen console and it would be hard for me to buy a Wii U instead of a PS4 if I had the cash. I really want to play Mario Kart though :(

£180 Mario Kart bundle would be closer to the mark for me, it's still around £230.

Alright here'e the thing, I can't find the PIN # inside the box, thus I can't redeem the free game. I wish I could get Pikmin 3 or Wind Waker HD for free though :(

Awww man, that sucks hard. You should call Nintendo customer service about it. You deserve your free game.

guess I get no answer. which game should I get for my digital freebie from MK8. I have them all on disc.

Is NSMBU a good choice or Pikmin or Wii Party U.

Did you go into the eShop and link the console to your Club Nintendo account? That should take care of it, it's how I got mine to work. I didn't have a paper with a PIN in my box either, so I'd guess that Nintendo didn't include them in the bundles anyway.

Very true, the writing and voice acting are outstanding. The humour is pitched very well, it is child friendly but also has elements that only an adult will understand.

£230 is a fair price especially considering that you would get a free extra game for that.
Pointless comparing it to ps4 really. Wii u is the only console that you can play nintendo games on. Not many cross platform games will be coming out on the u now, so relative "weak" power is irrelevant. It is not like comparing ps4/xbone. Besides it is 2/3 the price of the others and has a much better library of exclusive games.

Buy it and join the KartGAF fun! Though it's still your choice but it will really take some good amount of time for the unit to go down that low, and it's the cheapest out of all the current-gen consoles in the market today.

In case you just don't know what you're looking for, you have to scratch the silver stuff off of this leaflet to get the code underneath:

If it's genuinely not in there, that's crappy.

I guess the W101 demo really is bad, or I just don't get it. It's always surprising to see people on GAF recommend it. I kind of wish we could have an honest conversation about how much of the game's praise is genuine and how much of it is from the crowd that needed it to be a great game as soon as it was announced.

GAF led me to my first game import with Demon's Souls and that turned into my favorite game last gen, so I feel like I may be missing out with W101.

Also, MK8 is awesome. Between that and WWHD (never played on GCN), Wii U has been worth it for me.

I'm for sure getting Mario Kart 8 this afternoon, but how necessary is the Pro Controller? I don't have a car and I may wait a day or two for the buses to get back up-and-running.

This update is god awful. By the time I get it set-up, get MK8 and sit down to play, it'll be 2:00 when the US Men's national team play. I started this whole business around 10:30!

I had a Wii U for about a day a few months ago and played W101. The demo is truly atrocious and the game is damn good. I think I put about eight hours in that day. I'm not sure how easy/hard it will be to find, but TRU has been clearing out a lot of games for a while and W101 was one of them. Can be found for $15.

The problem with W101 is that if you never played the game and want a solid discussion about it, it would be hard to do without any spoilers. :/

All I can say is that it's absolutely wonderful. The boss battle are getting better and more epic as you progress through the story. The control scheme is a beast to tame, sure, but once you get it, it's all pure fun.

If you think you're missing out on it, or if you think it just may be your type of game, I absolutely recommend that you should play the finished product to forge yourself a solid opinion.

It's one of these games you need to try by yourself to know, imo.

Im glad that MK8 is as good as we were expecting it to be.

But new WiiU owners and those still on the fence should remember that stuff like
bayo2s8uou.gif
are still on the way, and that you cant play this anywhere else

I forgot that it's been a while since it came out, I'm going to try to find a cheap copy online for sure. Worth a shot. Thanks guys

Another recommendation for the new Wii U owners.

Get the Pro Controller, it's the best controller I ever used.
- dat ergonomic build
- dat battery length
- dat d-pad
- dat design
- dat symmetry

If it wasn't for its ZR and ZL buttons, I'd call it the perfect controller.

Everything the above posters said. I'd like to add that while the game is really good, it does a bad job explaining the combat. Luckily there's these videos on youtube that explain it really well. Once it all clicks, everything is great.

People asked for the 2DS and Wii Mini?

In some kind of way yes but nintendo gave its own spin on it. People where complaining about the durability of the 3ds and people did not want 3d and even parents saying they won't buy a 3ds because it might harm their kids. Now with 2ds hinges are gone so the weakest element of the build is out of the picture. Also 3d removed and parents got a cheap console for their kid. Wii mini was indeed lttp because people where looking for a cheaper wii. Should have been 2 more years early and it could have rekindled some of those wii sales.

I didn't actually try the demo before buying it, but my experience with just getting the finished product and launching straight into story mode was pretty great. Every thread is filled with insistence that the demo was terrible. I mostly bought the game out of new console fervor + black friday recklessness, as I'd just got the wiiu a few days before.

I guess what pleased me was how in-control I felt of the swarm of people no matter how large it got. Dodging, blocking, and dashing all felt good.

Making unite morphs was also quicker than I imagined it would be, just making a quick mark on the screen with a finger. It's mostly served as training wheels, and more and more of my shapes get drawn with the right stick.

There were things it took me forever to notice, and other things I still haven't tried. I didn't know about stunning enemies with repeated basic attacks for ages. I still haven't really tried doing many of the basic moves like launchers or spin attacks on purpose, and I've never attempted things like mid-combo unite morph switching. I didn't watch the fan made advance techniques videos until after I'd gone on a hiatus from the game for a bit.

Many of the non-combat interludes are kind of annoying, but some others are fun, and they're over fast enough.

It was strange that dodging and shielding were techniques that had to be purchased, but I was able to afford them at ether the first or second trip to the shop ever.

I guess the presentation could be grating to some people, but I found it funny in a positive way.

If you're concerned about personal bias: This is my second platinum game ever. My first was mad world, which I did not enjoy at all and sold within a couple weeks of buying it.

While I was able to be registered for the Free Game promotion for Club Nintendo, I generally thought the code would have been included in every copy of the game.

Does anyone know if buying a Fit Meter will still unlock the free copy of Wii Fit U? I vaguely remember there being a time limit set on unlocking the full game, but i loaded it up today and it only said it needed a Fit Meter and nothing about being expired.

After buying a WiiU for Mario Kart 8 i also tried ZombiU and im very pleasently surprised. Granted the combat is a bit wonky, but the atmosphere is great and im loving the "how long can you survive" approach. Going after your old character zombie with your new one to retrieve your stuff is oh so much fun.

Too bad this game is overlooked by many. It deserves more attention and a sequal (which sadly will never be made) :(

I loved ZombiU. Still to this day, the best use of the gamepad in a game.

You're right, Nintendo never does what customers ask for.

Its funny you think that, when most actual customers are fine with the gamepad.

Seems like the people who want it removed are not, in fact, customers.

By all accounts, circle pad pro didn't do a damn thing to help sales.

It was pretty much just a nod to capcom to get monster hunter. AFAIK, the only other games that really benefit are Kid Icarus and arguably RE.

Its just because "dual analogue" is so ingrained in peoples heads as a control scheme people assumed it 'must' be coming.

The W101 demo is bad and it takes a while once you have the game for it to click (took me until at least after mission 1 for things to click). IT is a great game but is one of those that you need to get your head around the controls and mechanics before things click and I can't really give any advice on how to get there, it just happened for me in mission 2.

Some quick questions about Club Nintendo/MK8 free game/DDP promo:

I want to wait until July 1 to register my Wii U and copy of MK8 on CN as I've already earned platinum this year. Do I need to link my CN account or register the Wii U on the eShop in order to access the store for demos and things of that sort? I also want to redeem some of the CN rewards for Wii U (wish I had done this for SMW!!!), but I want to get DDP credit if they count—do they count? And I just get a code that I redeem on the eShop, right?

Sorry if that's worded weirdly, but it looks like I might just have to ignore the eShop for a month or so and I'm just trying to wrap my head around it.

After buying a Wii U a few weeks back I now have more Wii U games than PS4 games. Totally enjoying the system. I took Pikmin 3 as my free game from MK8. I started the game with the stylus controls and am not really feeling the controls but really liking the game. I currently do not have a Wii Mote or Nunchuck but I was going to pick one up eventually anyway. For anyone who has played the game with both should I hold off until I get the WM/NC or press on with the stylus and hope it clicks?
