I guess the W101 demo really is bad, or I just don't get it. It's always surprising to see people on GAF recommend it. I kind of wish we could have an honest conversation about how much of the game's praise is genuine and how much of it is from the crowd that needed it to be a great game as soon as it was announced.
GAF led me to my first game import with Demon's Souls and that turned into my favorite game last gen, so I feel like I may be missing out with W101.
Also, MK8 is awesome. Between that and WWHD (never played on GCN), Wii U has been worth it for me.
I didn't actually try the demo before buying it, but my experience with just getting the finished product and launching straight into story mode was pretty great. Every thread is filled with insistence that the demo was terrible. I mostly bought the game out of new console fervor + black friday recklessness, as I'd just got the wiiu a few days before.
I guess what pleased me was how in-control I felt of the swarm of people no matter how large it got. Dodging, blocking, and dashing all felt good.
Making unite morphs was also quicker than I imagined it would be, just making a quick mark on the screen with a finger. It's mostly served as training wheels, and more and more of my shapes get drawn with the right stick.
There were things it took me forever to notice, and other things I still haven't tried. I didn't know about stunning enemies with repeated basic attacks for ages. I still haven't really tried doing many of the basic moves like launchers or spin attacks on purpose, and I've never attempted things like mid-combo unite morph switching. I didn't watch the fan made advance techniques videos until after I'd gone on a hiatus from the game for a bit.
Many of the non-combat interludes are kind of annoying, but some others are fun, and they're over fast enough.
It was strange that dodging and shielding were techniques that had to be purchased, but I was able to afford them at ether the first or second trip to the shop ever.
I guess the presentation could be grating to some people, but I found it funny in a positive way.
If you're concerned about personal bias: This is my second platinum game ever. My first was mad world, which I did not enjoy at all and sold within a couple weeks of buying it.
