Screw it! I finally bought a Wii U

Yup, that 30 minute X showing finally had me crack and I just bought a Wii U Mario Kart 8 bundle. I can't wait for the thing to get here.

Just curious, but what are everyone's favorite peripherals? I assume the Controller Pro, but what about other little crap like charging stations/cradles? Anything worth the extra $$?

The Mario Kart Bundle should come with a Gamepad charging cradle, I think all deluxe models too. Yeah, Pro controller is my favorite and the battery is beastly. It's all I've really needed for my Wii U.

gamepad hands down. dat thing is just so convenient.

Alright, one more noob question: I wanted to pick up The Wonderful 101 from TRU for $9 but alas they were out, so I grabbed Wind Waker HD for $27.xx today (Target promotion). I've never played a Zelda game, save for a few hours of Link's Awakening and I'm worried that I won't like it. I don't tend to have the attention span for long games, and often give up before ten hours. I can play something like Animal Crossing or Mario Kart for hours, but a tried-and-true RPG tends to frustrate me. I bought this game more for the fact that I got a deal than some longing to play it. In short, I'm on the fence as to whether I should open it up and give it a whirl, or return it and grab something else (3D World, Rayman Legends, DKC:TF, etc; I plan to pick up Pikmin 3 from the MK8 promo).

Help, GAF!

Will add.

Correction, I'm drunk, it's Arwingman101 without any spaces.

Open that bitch. The thing about Zelda is that while it's an open-exploration game that can run pretty long, they're never as complicated/complex as say something like Fallout. They're pretty leisurely, easy-going games that don't require you to keep up with a bunch of bullshit. They're never having you do inventory management or have you doing a billion sidequests like the games you're probably referring to in your post.

Wind Waker is really not a 50-hour game, nor is it what I would call a "tried-and-true RPG." I replayed the Wii U port when it came out and thought it was pretty breezy then. Honestly, at that price, you might be able to resell it if you hate it and not be out too much cash.

I knew it would be happening at some point, but I just pulled the trigger on one of the refurb $200 with Nintendo Land deals.

I never had a Wii so I'm short on Wii-Motes, so I bought 3 of the refurb Wii-Mote/Nunchuck deals also from Nintendo.

Grabbed a charging station that does the pad and Motes (read that the refurb doesn't come with the normal charging station), MK8, Mario 3D World, ZombiU, and Lego City Undercover - gonna grab Wonderful 101 and a Pro controller tomorrow in my travels.

Cannot wait for everything to get here, planning on Pikmin 3 as my MK8 free game.

Fine...

[EDIT] Gah, I named my file my own name, but now it's calling me that instead of Link in-game. Is there a way to change it, or do I have to start the file over again?

bought a wii u refurb and ordered Mk8, so I just need to decide what download game to pick. I can stomach 250 for a wii u and 2 games.
but man..... I never would have thought I'd buy a wii u, I haven't bought a nintendo console since like 2005 when i bought a used gamecube for shits an giggles.

Anecdotal and possibly related: there was a period when I was getting gamepad interference from some equipment in my apartment building, at the exact same hour every night. It was as if somebody was powering on something, and as a result my gamepad would tear both picture and sound for the duration of a second or so. Make sure you're not getting some violent interference from something in the vicinity, though how to check that is beyond my level of EM competence.

Yeah that tearing is the issue I get, just almost all the time. Wish there was a way to scan for interference.

I know it was mentioned about delays in orders from Nintendo's online store, but I had one hell of a time getting my $20 Wiimote +. I ordered it on the 22nd of May and got shipping confirmation a few days later but what happened over the next 20 day was wild.

I got notification that it was out for delivery on the 28th but it never showed up and the tracking number showed it was still a state away. When I called UPS, I was told it would be at my house by tomorrow. Well it never made it, instead it went back to Nintendo. I called Nintendo and was told it was a scanning error and would get to me in another week and they would look into refunding my shipping. I then got notification that it would be out for delivery on the 9th of June. Lets just say that didn't happen and was told by UPS that I could pick it up the next day at the local depot.

I stopped by the local depot and there was nothing there, no clue as to where it was. From what UPS told me this time was that it never shipped and all alone it was just the label that was bouncing around. I called Nintendo back and they offered to put in another order at no cost and overnight it plus give me $15 eshop credit for the inconvenience, they also told me that all the delay and other issues were from them moving to a new order entry system . Good news it, according to the tracking info it on my porch now. Hopefully no one else had issues, especially those getting consoles.

Here's an idea: take your wiiU with you to some remote place - a friend's or somesuch. Check how things work there, possibly after a re-sync.

As a new Wii U owner, I would just like to point out how fucking dumb it is I cant use the gamepad to play original Wii games. Just rebought Xenoblade (originally had an EU version) and now I need to set up a sensor, and also get a wii remote plus a controller. Fucking stupid.

Fine...

You have to start the file over again if you want to change your name. Despite how much everyone calls the main character "Link", it has been possible to rename him in every Zelda title. I can understand that being unexpected for someone who is mostly familiar with the series from other sources.

As a fresh Wii U owner myself, and a mostly happy one (Wind Waker is amazing), a couple of things I have big issues with:

1. Some games don't allow you to outsource all audio through the gamepad headphone jack. Perfect example, MK8 allows you to, Wind Waker does not. What the fuck is that?

2. The virtual console selection on Wii U is awful in comparison to Wii. The Wii U is basically a Wii itself anyway so why the hell isn't the full catalogue available?

Ye I wish there was a standard on the earphone thing.

But where did you get your info that a wiiu is a Wii?

Isn't there a Wii emulator app on the dash? They even included the sensor bar.

EDIT: Having another look at it, it might just be a Wii style menu.

I dont mean aiming the wii remote at the gamepad like a lunatic. I mean using the actual gamepad controls.

and apparently the original pro controller is OOP and the Wii U pro controller isnt compatible either. ugh.

Ahh, see what you mean. Yeah I sincerely hope they let you play Wii games using the GamePad controls soon.

If not, bring on the homebrew!

Yeah, I've started seriously considering getting a Wii U recently. I'm having trouble finding a straight answer on certain things. In "Wii Mode", is it possible to play the N64 games that don't work on the Wii U? Or are the N64 games completely unusable unless one keeps their Wii plugged in?

You can play your Wii VC games on your Wii U in Wii mode.
Also, if the Wii U VC version of said game is available in the Wii U e-shop, you will be offered a large discount and be able to play the Wii U version (sharper, play WITH the gamepad ON the gamepad).

Only had mine a week. Is there anyway to increase the image size of VC games on the gamepad? I got Super Metroid when I registered my Wii U for coins, but it plays it in 4:3 mode. I'd gladly take a stretch to fit option.

Also, can you change the gamepad's brightness somewhere?

So even the Nintendo 64 games can be played in Wii mode?

Oh cool, for some reason I thought VC games weren't playable only on the gamepad. Was this fixed in an update or am I just crazy? Strangely tempted by Earthbound even though my cart still works fine.

VC games purchased in eShop are all playable on the gamepad, VC games purchased in Wii Channel Shop aren't but if there's a eShop version then you can upgrade to that one for 1$ I think.

Sadly it won't happen. The problem is that it's a real Wii that's running.. Not an emulation or virtual machine. So first off they'd need to update the Wii Menu, as in an old fashioned WiiSystem Update (that of course could break stuff), just to be able to sync the Gamepad.. Long story short you will never see Wii U accessories compatible with Wii Menu.. And not because Nintnedo is lazy, but because it would require them to make significant updates to an OS that isn't even in development anymore. The only reason they were able to enable the Gamepad screen is because the encoder chip sits outside of the Wii portion of the hardware between the system and the display output.

Edit - home brew is always a possibility, but afaik home brew is still locked down to Wii Menu only. So if you could sync the Gamepad, it would be special home brew drivers and you'd likely have to resync it back in Wii U mode every time and vice versa.

I'm also in the screw it, I just bought a Wii U club. My GF was having a shitty week and was talking about playing mario kart 64 with her sister, so I just said fuck it and bought the mario kart bundle to cheer her up.

Also just bought a wii u. I made the stupid mistake of ordering a day too late, now even with 2 day shipping, it certainly won't be here until Monday. Really excited to get my hands on it. I've been dying to play 3d world since it's been announced.

Now all you need is some Classic Controller Pro combos and you can play Mario Kart 64 on it through Wii Mode in the Wii shop channel. It's 10 USD.

I think I've basically just become a WiiU fanboy. It was the only current gen system I've been playing up until now, but after E3? Yeah. I'm really glad I have this thing.

Same here, the Wii U was never in my radar until Mario Kart 8. Bought the MK8 bundle and got Pikmin 3 as a freebie. Also bought Zelda: WW, Wonderful 101 and Monster Hunter 3! So many great games!

Bought the new super mario wii u bundle last week. Then got mario kart 8, got pikmin 3 for free, couldn´t resist getting wind waker hd, and yesterday i bought monster hunter 3 ultimate. Sweet jesus, I´m loving the system already.

Literally got the exact same lineup of games for the Wii U I just got. Been loving off TV play especially as I usually play my handhelds more anyways. So many great games on Wii U, I'm still dying to try 3D World too.

Also check out Amazon. Lots of great, low-priced games. For instance, Deus Ex is $17.xx and Splinter Cell is $14.xx. No brainers.

One day in the future, if you actually finish the game, you'll look back on this decision and say, hey, that was a good decision.

Heh, I'm still awaiting my console to arrive - but I honestly don't doubt your post one bit. I've read too many good things by people who have nothing to gain by praising it to think it's not a hidden gem. Can't wait.
