Sega confirms next main Sonic game is due in 2017

"Hey Sonic, if this all goes tits-up we can at least try and fit you into another Smash game, yeah?"

There are some uncertainties whether they're referring to the next Sonic Team game or not. Hopefully it will be cleared up soon.

What's fascinating is looking at release lists Sonic Team has put out a game every year since their creation in the early 90's till 2014 with Pryor Pulp Tetris.

That means they would not only miss one year for the first time but two.

Then you have the last Sonic Team developed game in 2013 and this is by far the largest gap between Sonic games made by them.

Generations was pretty alright so I'm interested in at least seeing what the new one'll be like! Would be nice ta be hype for a new Sonic game. Been a long long time since Rush after all.

Roughly 4 years since Lost World, huh. That's really long for a Sonic game to have been in development. Very interested to see what we get.
Sonic Teams prolly been super busy with PSO2. Maybe that games now at a state where they can free up manpower from it back to Sonic?

The anniversary game is still being shown off at the big party this July and with it releasing early next year likely, they can do an information blow out to cover a lot of the game. Maybe their will be a demo released on PS4/X1 once the event is over, sorta like how in June 2011 we got a demo of Generations.

Sonic Boom Fire & Ice looks to be a damn solid title and I wouldn't be surprised if we get a Generations or Classic Collection port on consoles this fall to make up for the lack of an anniversary game.

I want to be excited about the game....but can't anymore, as I will not be playing it if its a NX exclusive :l. So, just going to say I hope it looks good and that the announcement is well done.

Sonic sold me on PS3 with Generations, but not going to be a sucker for the NX until we learn a lot more about it. Just....honestly upset with this news and hope SEGA clears things up closer to the event next month.

So much for the 25th anniversary.

Sonic Boom 3DS of course ;). In all seriousness I could see maybe a digital release of an older game at least to say that there's something. But I think we can all agree that a game releasing in 2017 with (hopefully) a good amount of polish is better than something rushed out for 2016.

Sonic at NX launch?

Oh that's happening. Sega won't risk missing that launch knowing how Sonic does sell well on Nintendo's hardware.

As long as it'll release before June 23, 2017 it can still be considered a 25th anniversary game.

And the Nintendo NX is rumored to come out in March 2017. Hmm...

Either they are trying to make its launch in addition for the other platforms (PS4/X1/PC) or Nintendo payed for it to be a NX exclusive after being impressed with the title.

Honestly now sure which I believe more......but oh well :l. We will learn everything next month hopefully.

If anyone paid attention to Sonic's Twitter, they revealed yesterday that the new game would be revealed July 22nd.

And it's been in the works for a few years now by the Generations team!

It's better than nothing.

Honestly, I couldn't think of a better quote to make right now :').

'Its better then nothing' for people not interested in Nintendo consoles for sure. I needed the laugh, so thank you for that.

Still got Sonic Boom Fire & Ice, can replay Freedom Planet and give Generations another run though.

Really hope they drop all the 3D stuff and go back to 2D, where Sonic works best. Also gorgeous HD cartoon sprites would be great for Sonic, no more 2.5D nonsense, give us a true sequel to Sonic 3 / Sonic & Knuckles.

Kinda surprised so many are assuming it'd be a Nintendo exclusive. As far as I knew, the Wii U deal was a critical and sales disaster.

You do realize how expensive & time-consuming sprites are, right?

How exactly does it take Sonic Team 3-4 years to crank out a Sonic game when their only other project was that mobile runners thing? I seriously doubt they shipped most of their Sonic staff over to PSO2, so whatever they've been working on better be mainline Mario quality or serious questions need to be asked about they way Sonic Team operates. Trying to push through the 25th anniversary year with a heavily delayed Boom 3DS sequel and a cameo in a Lego game is barely better than what Metroid got.

I don't know, but just assuming it is so I don't get upset later if that is announced and I don't ruin the mood/excitement for others.

I strongly doubt Nintendo would bother to invest in Sonic exclusives after the Wii U deal falling flat but who knows.

Previously: THEY NEED TO STOP RUSHING GAMES OUT TO MEET DEADLINES!

Now: WHAT'S TAKING THEM SOO LONG, WHY ARE SEGA LETTING THEM FINISH AT THEIR OWN PACE?

Look at it this way, this is the first major game since Generations, their previous track record of Unleashed and Generations so far shows this team as the good Sonic games team, if they want more time to make things better, they're the ones who have earned that right.

I strongly disagree, as Metroid is far worse; people never got the game turned-around the Sonic 06-like impact Other M had on the franchise, but that is a whole different discussion.

Just putting genuine time and effort into it, maybe?

Someone on Sonic Retro said they've seen a prototype for an XB1 Sonic game on Microsoft's dev server and that it's not a boost game nor does it use Lost World's parkour system. If it's a new formula they could be trying to get it just right rather than half-baking it as they've done in the past when they decide to shake things up, as the deadlines never gave them enough time to fine-tune whatever new concept they have.

Sega is becoming far more about delaying a game if it sucks rather than shoving out some unfinished product. The Sonic Boom game on 3DS has already been delayed by a year.

Be worth it if done well though, as Sonic games have been pretty mediocre to outright shite since the days of Sonic 3 + S&K.

I'd rather just play the originals, than play any of the newer games because not one of them has topped the original games.

Since when has the rushing argument been relevant post-Unleashed? Rotating the main and storybook teams had them releasing Colours 2 years after Unleashed and Generations a year after Colours, both were great entries, both had enough dev time.

As you yourself said, every time they create a new formula the results are tragic and led to trainwrecks like Heroes, Shadow, 06, the Unleashed werehog levels and Lost World. No amount of polish or time could save any one of those because the base ideas were utterly rotten.

And as I said, after 4 years this title has no excuses for being anything less than mainline Mario quality, it better be polished to perfection.

I thought the consensus for Lost World was "good ideas, needed far more time in the oven".

I want to say the same for 06 but don't want to be labelled as one of them loonies.

You aren't a loony for thinking that; 06 done right would be the Adventure 3 many want now.

But yes, Lost World is a game that if built upon some more, could be a damn solid Sonic game.

It was. Lost World's biggest issues were from a lack of polish (some of the level transitions are an absolute joke).

Sonic Adventure 3 please. Actually, I'd take a remake of the first 2 Adventure titles with improved controls and presentation.

The chance of this being an exclusive is incredibly low considering how poorly Sonic has sold recently and how SEGA is looking to expand the franchise as much as possible now. Multiplatform is the safest bet unless Nintendo ponies up what is going to be the longest developed Sonic game in well, forever if it's a late 2017 release.

Anyway going to be excited to see what it looks like and if it's going to be an early or late 2017 game.

Ofcourse, they arent gonna release a sonic game and not have it release on the most current nintendo console where the fanbase is.

For reals? PSO2 is a big game and a bigger moneymaker than any Sonic game could dream of being. Ya better believe they were focusing on it long & hard.
