Sega Genesis Pocahontas is a really underrated game

I have been playing the Disney Sega games, like the two B&B games, Aladdin, Lion King, Pinocchio, The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid, etc.

I don't really know why or how this era of fun licensed platformers for Disney movies came out, but I ain't mad.

Pocahontas is underrated af. This has some of the best organic level design and puzzles I've seen in a Sega Genesis game. It was never particularly difficult puzzles, but very satisfying and realistic with some clever slow-paced platforming (although the controls were a little clumsy). Also, the art style, animations, and sound quality were exceptional for a Genesis game. The game is quite short though, and can be completed in 1 hour, with 4 main large levels going through the movie's scenes. I highly recommend this game if you want a short puzzle, platformer.
It's easy to like this game better than the movie

This shit is still so good.
You solve puzzles as both Pocahontas and her raccoon, Meeko. As you progress, you help animals as Pocahontas and gain their powers to help in your puzzle solving and platforming. It has surprisingly organic and well-designed levels. Within the first few minutes, you're using Meeko to take secret tunnels and push rocks so that Pocahontas can climb to high ledges. Meeko also doesn't swim, so you need to TLOU-style use rafts and floating logs to let him cross water. But it feels a little fresh each time because the implementation differs a little. The animal powers are useful and make sense. Otter power lets you dive underwater, bird power let's you survive large falls (which cutely enough, you get from rescuing a baby bird that fell out of its nest).

There is even a stealth level that really use the puzzle solving skills. Coming back to it, it kinda reminds me of an early, 2D pseudo-MGS (obviously controls weren't as good, but this came out in 1996). I remember being shocked at the quality of level design at play here for such an old game made with a Disney license.

Does anyone else remember this game? Honestly I was playing this and The Jungle Book tonight on my Genesis and they're still fun games.

I've never played it. Was it only on Genesis or was the Genesis version just the better version? If it was across multiple platforms was the Genesis version different like other Disney games?

There was a Game Boy version as well, a SNES version was developed but canceled.

Really enjoyed the game back in the day, iirc it was the first game I'd ever played that used the mechanic of needing to use two characters to progress with one helping the other.

Disney games back then were so good.

Yup, and it was seamless! A single button press instantly switched between the two no matter where they were. Faster than GTAV's character switch lol. And you're right, it's the first instance I remember as well. The puzzles were all designed around using both characters, in ways I see games even today mimic. This game has some of the best two-character co-op environmental puzzles I had seen until...idk...can't really think of many of those kinds of games right now....but maybe Portal 2.

Pinocchio and Pocahontas were pretty late releases in the Genesis' lifespan. It's not surprising that they were overlooked. I recall the reviews for both games not being so great, which isn't surprising when you consider the newer consoles available and on the horizon.

That looks pretty cool. I never knew this existed. I had most of the mega drive Disney games too.

I remember liking Pinocchio a lot for some reason. Would like to give this one a try if I ever get the chance

I remember i liked this game as a kid. Because its Disney, and easy to finish it. Each animal one skill and the puzzles are entertaining.

To answer your question I never played The Jungle Book or Pocahontas games. I will check them out though.

What does B&B stand for in regards to the two B&B games?

There were two Beauty & The Beast games. One from Belle's perspective that was more puzzle and point-and-click adventure style based, and one from Beast's perspective that was more action and platforming (and kind of difficult).

The Jungle Book and Pinocchio games were also surprisingly high quality.

Beauty And The Beast. They had two separate games (neither which were very good)

On-Topic, so glad to see this game get some love. Its a truly special and unique game that is always overshadowed by Aladdin and Lion King, unfairly i may add.

Beauty and the Beast (I had to look it up. The Genesis, Mega Drive had two of them) Oh damn, beaten...

I never played Pocahontas or The Jungle Book. But Aladdin is great, The Lion King is decent, Gargoyles (little uneven, but fun), and Toy Story (it makes a nice tech demo) were alright, as far as Genesis/ Mega Drive Disney games go.

Also, Castle of Illusion, Quack Shot and World of Illusion are some of the best Disney licensed games on the console. All made by Sega of Japan.

Maui Mallard and Mickey Mania are also worth looking at.

I approve of this thread! I discovered it a few years ago myself and was blown away. Such a fresh experience compared to most of the offerings of the day.

I concur that The Jungle Book is also great.

Don't sleep on Emperor's New Groove on PS1. Actually I was a kid so I don't know if it holds up, but I loved it and I'm pretty sure it got good reviews.

What?? This game is pure cancer. Do you know how many girls played this in the 90s and got so frustrated with it that stopped playing games forever??

This is the E.T. of (then potential) gamer girls.

I rememember not liking the movie on cinema,so I never bothered with the game.
Movie wasnt as highly praised as Aladdin,Lion King,B&B, Little Mermaid.
Hunchback even less so.

My sis liked playing Phantasmagoria back then...

I liked this game more than the movie lmao

I played that one as a kid too. Not sure how it holds up anymore either. I'm curious.

Hercules for PC/PS1 was also good, and it also did some interesting artistic things with the 3D effects.

I remember jungle book being frustrating because you had to search for all the items in the level. I finished it but it took a long time.

Emperors new groove is a decent platform we for what it is. Hercules doesnÂ’t stand up but back in the day it was rather incredible I thought

Never played it and didn't even know it existed to be honest but those are some good looking gifs. I'll check it out.
I miss the days of really good Disney games. Ah, the Illusion games, sigh...

I added some extra details having just gotten through the whole game. It's quite short, with 4 large levels you can beat in 1 hour, but it's high quality throughout. The animations, graphics, and sound alone deserve praise (although the game's only songs are the movies like 5 main songs or whatever).

It's kinda mind blowing to me that we see concepts like this in the stealth level (albeit short and under-utilized) when MGS released 2 years later and this game was completely forgotten.

I never saw the movie to compare but yeah, Genesis Pocahontas is underrated and isn't just a by-the-numbers licensed platformer. It reminds me a bit of Out of this World/Another World.
