Sega hopes Sonic can help revive Wii U

So are people convinced that Lost World will be a good game? I think it looks decent, but I read a preview in Gameinformer Australia that wasn't exactly glowing. It said there were some issues with the controls/momentum that are hopefully cleared up by the time the game launches...

I'm hearing mixed things. A lot of people said it controls fine. I'll decide for myself.

I'm sure it'll do at least as well as sonic racing, even being pessimistic, which puts it at over 250k sales fairly easily.

They're putting it on the basket that sells. Sonic colours on wii managed to equal the sales of generations across xbox/pc/ps3/3ds combined (Generations sold 1.85m from november - march in its launch year, colours across DS and Wii sold 1.85m in november - feb)

That, and nintendo probably leveraged it's right to let sega keep making mario vs sonic olympic games which are where they really make some money, being as it sells much more than any other console game sega makes.

Where are you getting 250k from? It hasn't sold 150k in NA and Sonic is not nearly as popular in Europe and dead in Japan.

Sonic comfirmed for SSB4! Seriously with all that's going on right now, i'll be shocked if he didn't return.

Also, Lost World is looking pretty great.

the frame rate debate and 30/60fps being objectively better over the other is easily the dumbest argument to come out of the graphic whore niche. then again I realize most of those fools are the same ones who find motion enhancement on 120Hz TVs to be a good thing.... :\

I'm willing to bet most people who support games running at 60fps would not consider frame interpolation an acceptable solution.

how fast the game receives players input has nothing to do with the fps of the rendered screens.

Yes, but how fast a player gets visual confirmation of that input has very much to do with the frame rate. Maximum visual response delay for 30fps is about 33ms, while for 60fps it's only 17ms.

30fps is fine by me, but I think it can be said that 60fps is objectively better than 30fps. If nothing else, it leads to smoother more fluid visuals. If everything else remains constant, how can a higher frame rate NOT be objectively better?

This is the first sonic game I have been excited to play since sonic adventure. Theres alot of the old sonic game feelings in this game from watching the trailers and previews, the classic running anamation to the spin dash.

Is Sonic still popular among children? I would think the Sonic games are to attract more of the children's market (in fact, the whole exclusive lineup from this point on for the Wii U looks to be potentially attractive to children and the casual market so long as they are still gaming on consoles). And obviously the core market will be attracted to games such as Splinter Cell, Watch_Dogs, Assasin's Creed IV and Call of Duty Ghosts with their off-tv features...(sarcasm)

edit:\/ Question answered.

As someone who loved Sonic 1 and 2 back in the day, is Sonic even popular in the mainstream anymore? I know people that played the old games probably are interested, as well as the "eccentric" Sonic fan culture. Just not sure how a niche game on a seemingly niche platform nowadays can save Wii U. Short of Nintendo first parties I don't think anything will help.

1. Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe comic book are bigger sellers than any other of Archie comics lineup. The main comic is celebrating it's 20th year in publishing and will soon overcome Conan as the longest running licensed comic book.

2. Sonic X has been playing on Saturday morning cartoon for over 8 years (at least 5 in reruns) and was still getting high ratings. I think it's on Disney Channel now.

3. Mario and Sonic Olympic games are million sellers that take forever to go down in price.

4. Sonic Colors on Wii/DS outsold Generations on PS3 and 360.

He won't sell many systems on his own, but Sonic is still a major franchise. Especially with kids.

it airs on cw saturday morning.and it saddens me that they've been milking the shit out of that show with reruns. how old is it? i remember seeing an ad for it on fox in 2003/2004.

Game looks pretty neat; day one buy from me.

Sonic is still popular among the children right? It being exclusive may make put the Wii U on some kids wishlist. It will probably help the Wii U this holiday as their line up screams family friendly.

Not bad, so SEGA is hoping for similar numbers with the 3DS and Wiiu version.
But, you forgot one thing, Wii install base at that time was 50~75, DS install base was massive too. Compared to 3 million, and whatever 3DS has now.

So either you're banking on 66% of video-game starved console owners, or the 3DS is going to sell more because of its larger install base.

Well the 3DS game looks fairly solid, so I think it's possible that it sells pretty well. On the other hand I'm sure people will continue to buy Sonic later if/when more Wii Us are sold after this upcoming year. While I'm not sure whether it'll match Colors' numbers, it could potentially do better than most expect.

I plan on buying a Wii U for this game. LOL at me buying a Nintendo console to play a Sonic game. Shit has changed, hahaha.

Maybe I should just start putting the sega financial reports in every post I make on the subject: Sega themselves said SASRT sold >260k on wii u.

Page 21. It's the only packaged game sega released on wii u (two skus, limited and regular edition, no that I've ever seen the regular edition) and it is at >310k sales now.

Except that logic doesn't even make sense: if you ever go by that logic, you should never, ever release anything on a new console because it doesn't have a install base compared to the old one. That isn't how the industry works.

It won't by itself fix the Wii U's dearth of software problems but it really looks like a game that will put the console on the right track and be a small time system seller.

I WANT this to happen. And then I want to use a time machine to go back to 1992 and tell people that Sonic will be the savior of Nintendo one day.

SEGA says that it hopes Sonic will be able to help revive sales of Nintendo's flagging Wii U with the release of Sonic Lost World this October.
