Series that need a God of War style reboot

Inspired by the Fable thread, I thought this would be an interesting discussion because a lot of series could fit the bill for this one. As we saw at E3 2016, the next God of War game will be very different from previous titles, altering major story and gameplay components that have become associated with the series. Greek mythology, a fixed camera with a pulled-back 3rd-Person view, and the Blades of Chaos are all gone. Instead replaced with an Norse mythology, an over-the-shoulder Gears of War type camera, and a badass axe. Kratos has even gotten a bit of redesign, sporting a new beard and a few other minor changes.

What's interesting to note is that God of War PS4 has been confirmed to not be a full reboot. It's a continuation of the series, but has quite palpably evolved from its predecessors. When it comes to other games that could use this type of "soft reboot," I can think of no better example than Assassin's Creed. I think it's what the series needs at this point, and I believe we are actually getting something similar with the next AC game (according to a rumor). The game needs to be completely reworked:

- Go back to the platforming in AC1 where there was a bit of challenge and player control.

- Put the emphasis on stealth, like Hitman. As a matter of fact, this could really succeed as just a Hitman game set in an interesting era.

- Ditch the convoluted storyline entirely, keep it simple. No Templars, no Animas, no digital-purgatory loading screens.

What other series could use a similar type of reboot, and how should they be rebooted?

You mean a normal reboot, no? Seems like the new GoW is more of a genre shift.
I do think games like Assassin's Creed and Dynasty warriors need a break/evolution.
Being an Assassin through the ages or taking part of a war and fighting thousands of warriors by yourself should be extremely hype, but it's mostly just boring junk.
Shadow of Mordor was the best AC game to date and it's not even made by Ubisoft. Something like that could be cool.
Both seem to be going through a reboot phase, so that's good.

I don't think they should ever get rid of the templars or the aninimus, that's Assassin's Creed's DNA. Call of Duty needs one of there 3 studios to take a big risk. New engine, big changes to multiplayer etc.

Onimusha needs a reboot. Nioh is exactly how I imagined a reboot like that to be, only less hard, a few more puzzles here and there, and slower combat but with a bigger focus on Issen stuff.

I'd take an over-the-shoulder 3rd person reboot of Final Fantasy.

Prompto guiding his son, Prompto-kun, across dangerous lands so that his heir learns to become a master photographer.

God of War always felt like it was naturally headed this route since the games have never had that insane depth that you would find in DMC or Bayonetta. This new one seems to be embracing the cinematic focus it always had to the extreme that the Naughty Dog games do.

As far as games I would like to see rebooted like that, I guess a dead franchise like Dino Crisis with RE6 combat is something I would want.

Well the new GoW looks like shit so far but I'd like to see Ass Creed get a reboot because the last two haven't been too good.

David Jaffe has wanted the God of War series to be more Zelda-inspired for a while. Who knows, maybe some of that was passed on to Cory Barlog.

A lot of people ask me if I'd ever make another GOD OF WAR (assuming that opportunity was offered) and I always say the same thing: if it were GOD OF WAR meets something like ZELDA (formula wise), then yes (aka Darksiders, right?)Â…But if it were GOD OF WAR using the current formula, I would not. For me- and this is just me PERSONALLY (I get and respect not everyone shares this same thinking)- directing GOD OF WAR made me realize that as a game designer (and certainly as game director) I want our games to serve the gods of GAMEPLAY first and foremost. My and then team's desire to tell a story/make a movie may or may not get to be fulfilled (depending on the game) but if we do tell a story, it will never come at the expense of the gameplay (the thing that makes our medium matter and special). Games can have story (and many should, such as God of War) and most games- even pure play games- should have strong world and IP. But working on God of War made it clear that- for me- if we have to cut a set piece or bit of spectacle because of our desire to put play first, then so be it. Ideally, the BEST games are those that do both.

The E3 trailler still pisses me off. I hate the changes the made to combat.

A very strong sentiment for not having played the final game yet.

Anyway to answer the thread, I think a game like DMC could benefit from a bit of a genre shift. Actually if it added some GOW elements I think that'd be cool.

None, I dont like that they're making a "spin off" (completely different gameplay and rhythm) and naming it like a main series game.

If they want a change in direction that big, the name of the game should reflect it, to avoid confusion.

No I get what you are saying but was trying to say that we should wait and see if the reboot works or not before making wild guesses about other games.
It doesn't matter whether it's good or not, the point is that it changed. I'm asking what series could use a change with a similar magnitude.

I know what I like and don't like. I liked all 6 god of war games that i owned, played and beat. I don't like what I've seen from the reboot. It feels like a betrayal to god of war fans.

That's fair.

I think it's unfair for people to say you can't formulate strong opinions just cuz you haven't played it. Observations can be conclusive enough.

Super Mario

I just need Darksiders sequel :(.
Or better say the two other remaining horsemen games.
Will it ever happen?
Darksiders is one of my favorite series.

I have only played GoW 1, thought it was decent for what it was.

New game looks like something I wouldn't enjoy at all.

Does make me want to go back and try GoW 3 though.

Assassin's Creed. Ubisoft reached a point where I can't see a best solution. Gameplay needs a complete overhaul cause the combat mechanics is way too simplistic nowadays as well as the mission structure (besides the good improvements in it since AC Unity, but not enough). The climbing is still very clunky and could use many adjustments. But the worse part is the story... they totally fucked it up since AC2 Revelations, and tried to fix it here and there but only made things more messy... A reboot would be perfect, they could freely adjust the gameplay and pretend that what happened in AC about Desmond and his crew never happened.

Super Mario

Gears and Halo. Desperately so.

With all due respect to these opinions, but I don't agree at all.

Super Mario just need a new art style and some new elements (wich they may add in the next entry) cause it is still one of the best 2D plaform games out there.

Gears of War 4 is kind the proof that it doesn't need a reboot, players accepted it pretty well and Coalition has shown to be competent enough to do a new trilogy.

About Halo, 343i has changed a lot of it and many still don't accept... however the game won't be in Bungie's hands anymore and I don't think a reboot would make people happy (actually, could make things worse since it means they'd pratically ignore Bungie's trilogy). It's hard, but I believe 343 should keep doing their job or just create something new. But I'd still love a Halo 6 from them to be honest, Halo 5 is a pretty great product nowadays.

i was watching Parasite Eve cutscenes on YT because wtf not, and I couldn't help but think why hasn't Capcom rebooted that series?

I don't really think reboots are a good thing *most* of the time.

Occasionally they can be fantastic. I consider Rayman Origins to be a reboot and it, along with Legends, are the best in the franchise.

But generally I would prefer a developer just make a new IP. If a franchise's time has come, shelve it. Either it had a good run and we can appreciate it with re-releases or, if it's grown stale and/or oversaturated, we can revisit it with a new entry when the time is right... much later.

The risk of trying to serve too many people and pleasing none is too great. I especially dislike when a franchise forgets what it was that its core fans really liked about it.

Give them time. They're still busy rebooting Castlevania.

Lol. I had to do a double take there.

Gears and Halo. Desperately so.

Lets take Halo and slow it down and make it like CS.
though they could potentially make warzone like battlefield with classes and it would FIT the series just fine

Lets take Gears and make it an FPS.

NOPE.

Honestly, they should just stop making those games. Like, limit it to one difinitive entry per generation. That should be fine. Just support it with expansions.

A lot of franchises should sloowwww dowwwwn.

Give people time to miss them.

Metroid. It feels like Sakamoto pushed the franchise off a cliff in Other M in terms of story and character. Nintendo is too prideful to do retcon the game out of existence, however, so the best we could do is give it an entire continuity reboot a la Tomb Raider or DOOM. Like that franchise, it needs better writers while going back to the elements that made Metroid a classic.

Pretty sure the next God of War was rebooted after the E3 showing.

tbf I can see how to make Gears an FPS

Everything would be better if rebooted as an FPS.
