servers complain black people do not tip

when I was a black person I tipped very well, thank you very much.

Sooo, you changed your race? Please, do tell.

Anyway, I think the problem is the general ignorance of how the restaurant industry works. I didn't know before a close friend of mine started working at Red Lobster that waiters get paid less than half of minimum wage and pretty much rely solely on tips. Most people don't know that, and think they're getting actual minimum wage or a little more.

20% isn't the standard. You merely give around that much if the service is exceptional and/or the server is someone you know.

I myself have given 25% to a waitress at a small diner before, just because I was familiar with her and she would always do her job well. Plus the bill wasn't high anyway.

You're supposed to tip based on pre-tax amounts, correct? If that's so, for years I actually did it the other way, based on post-tax amounts. So I guess I was being generous. But even now I usually calculate my tip based on post-tax. I usually try to land between 15-20%. Recently I've been calculating 17% of the post-tax amount and rounding up or down to the nearest dollar. I don't tip in decimals except for, in some cases, 50 cent increments when the calculation just seemed to work perfectly that way.

Tipping should be expected, but I agree that it's the customer's right to be calculated in their approach vs. just throwing more money at servers than what's deserved.

But seriously, I go out of my way to tip nicely JUST because of the sterotype that black folk tip garbage. But what happens when you get truly shitty service? I don't mean one thing was wrong...but multiple things. The very last time I ate...this weekend to see The Avengers on Friday night my friends and I went to Chili's.

Our movie was at 10:15. We wanted to be on line by 9:15 to get good seats. We sat down to eat at 7:15. So we waited about 20 minutes and a waitress finally waddles over. We put in some drinks and appetizers. After that she's gone for nearly an hour. Ok...we'll have to scarf our food but it's all good. Take some burgers and fries another 40 minutes to get to our table without a peep from her. I said fuck it. My one friend left to go hold our spot. And the rest of us just decided to get our grub to go. But the waitress isn't around.

So yea, I left her a $5 tip on a $80 order and I feel NO shame at all. Normally I tip 20-40% but fuck that. Maybe she saw a bunch of black guys and figured we won't tip anyway so she didn't bother to give a shit. But at that point it's on her. We are all professionals. All make money. But we still get shit service but we don't take it personal but it's definitely reflected in the amount I personally tip.

it's an unfortunate vicious cycle. most servers don't start out jaded, but within a few months they pick up on patterns and basically become racist and ageist (is that even a word?). then, they don't even bother busting their asses for those tables, as you described. so even well-tipping people like yourself get screwed over. i really don't know how to fix that aside from abolishing tipping, but that will never happen. and if it did, you'd probably get shit service anyway cause the incentive would be lost.

Fun Fact: He's Mexican American.

yeah, he's wrong on that. tips are supposed to be reported. most people under report, but they are certainly not tax free.

i am so glad i'll never have to work in that industry again. hell, i'll be in the healthcare field and I won't even do emergency medicine cause it's too similar, aside from tipping.

I work healthcare, I get paid potatoes. =/. No one can afford out of pocket costs... cant afford healthcare, medicare and medicaid has been cut... so we are getting fewer and fewer people to come to our hospitals anymore so we're all working more for less...

then they better do a job of such quality that reflects said dependency.

If you let my cup go 5 minutes without a refill...well...you'd be amazed how fast my 25% tip becomes 5%.

I love the guys that don't even ask me if I want a refill. It's fantastic. You'd think I were tipping a stripper when I get pampered like that. Seriously, the ones that come by often and serve me what I wanted, and hell when I see him/her busting their ass off at other tables... they get paid that night.

A lot of those first page complaints about 20% being outrageous must be from people outside the NYC-metro area of the northeastern US. 20% is pretty much standard here.

The wages are often set below minimum wage because of the expectation of tips. Some servers will earn $3/hr when minimum wage is somewhere around $7.50/hr, because tips are expected to constitute the bulk of the income.

that sucks and shouldnt happen imo

so i guess if they dont earn minimum wage throughg tips the company makes up for it, but still

Tips are tax free? Not what the IRS says.

Also, I've given 100% tip before... I was feeling generous that day (~20 bucks).

I live in Canada. I'm probably wrong about my original statement because I remember that they pay their taxes on their sales before taking their tips. Still, I remember lots of instances wherein they (the annoying ones) would complain after they had made $200-300 just in their tips alone.

I am a server at a restaurant and have been at a few others. In Louisiana a server makes 2.13/hr so yeah a tip goes a long way for us. I wait tables and bartend a few nights a week. I can agree that MOST blacks don't tip. Case in point yesterday 2 black women came in with a coupon for a free medium pizza. They each got waters, the free pizza and left. On the other hand I got a tip of 20.76 on 9.23 yesterday. Most days my tips average out to around 18 per hour but some nights I'll work 6 hours and make 180. I make more than anyone at my restaurant, use common sense and really do try to be the best I can. I guess most weeks I average 6-700 a week. But I can totally testify about people not tipping, but as most servers will tell you, you can spot the ones who won't tip or tell within the first 2 minutes of waiting on them.

If I was a waiter (I'm not) I honestly wouldn't report my tips.

It's not that I don't like paying taxes, but to have to account for taxes and put cash aside just to report at the end of the year and backpay, that's just unrealistic to ask me to do.

but as most servers will tell you, you can spot the ones who won't tip or tell within the first 2 minutes of waiting on them

How so? Elaborate.

They pay taxes on 50% off the tips here in canada.

This topic comes up so often I didn't even realize it was a necroed thread until all the banneds started scrolling by!

Me either. I was secretly jealous because I never thought about combining a tipping/black people thread into one. It was a sure-fire 500 replies.

Fun Fact: He's Mexican American.

At least they tip! Even if it's just 5 bucks still worth it! But seriously I use to work at Chicago Ribs here in L.A. and from my experience, Mexican's usually tip not that high but they do tip, which I'm still cool with. Sadly can't say this about black folk, there 50/50 wherever they'll tip or not. Again just saying what I experience at my old job.

They don't pay the taxes during the normal pay period?

I waited tables for 6 years at cheesecake factory and a high end bbq place called the county line. In my experience the worst tippers are:
1 arab or indian (from india) people
2 african americans
3 asians
4 harly davidson people
5 lunch crowd anyone
6 hispanics
7 white

Its pretty well known and nothing racist about it.

Having worked in the restaurant industry has been a direct influence on how I tip.

In that, I find myself tipping higher than my friends who have not worked in the restaurant industry.

The only person I know that doesn't tip works at MickeyD's and is an all around loser anyways. His theory is that since he doesn't get tipped why should he tip anyone else?

Harley Davidson people?

If you were a waiter and never claimed ANY tips for years. You would get audited or something similar.

yeah, that's a whole 'nother story.

If you dont report tips the restaurant and you WILL get audited. Most restaurants force you to claim 10% of sales.

Sorry this is BS and called profiling.

I find that most people don't know that servers make 2.13 an hour (could be higher now). Therefore, at the end of the night after tip out, you don't really make that much.

Pffft, I woulda broke that number 1 place...

My dad tips like crazy too. Extremely conservative Arab, etc, but he believes in hard work and generosity... I guess I take from him. We've got some local places we go to often cuz the food is good and he'll tip 50% on a 100 dollar tab... Dude has no money in his damn retirement fund and he tips like that.

But yeah... arabs don't generally tip. lmao.

Lol I have a buddy who worked at MickeyD's and doesn't tip either.

I don't report them all, and try not to deposit much cash. If I make 150 in a night I'll claim ten and pay my bills in cash or money orders.

To elaborate, automatically spot tippers

Man wife 2 kids, white, dressed decent %15
Man wife both attractive and white %20
Man and woman on date and black %10
Man and woman married and black %2-%5
Group of guys that look preppy/fratish=shit
Group of guys watching a game, or just hanging out, regular guys %15
Guy who looks fancy as all hell %20 alone %25-%30 on date

To tell in the first few minutes

Guy wife and 2 kids that order one drink%15 two drinks is almost always %20
Don't order the cheapest food we have %17
Order the highest price %20-%25
Split an entree and young %0-%5

And I can tell you it isn't uncommon for servers to toss a few bones to another server to pick up a table that looks like itll be a PITA or not worth their time

white people tip like this

but BLACK people tip like this.

*leans back*

Also, tips are double the tax. Tax in NYC is about 9%, so you get close to 18%. In a bar, you receive as many dollars as there are drinks in the order, up to $4. Most times you aren't getting more than 4 drinks in one run, so it's fine. After the 8th drink, you receive $2 a run (unless it's one drink, then you get $1). If that isn't fair, fuck you.

I really didnt get many. Check average per persan was ~$20 each plus tax and tip so that crowd usually didbt come.

Sounds like you were a shitty waiter. And this issue really is an American thing. The tipping. I don't know why foreigners need to come into these threads. I don't go into soccer threads and start jabbering away.

In other news, from the article.

I'm going back to my reasoning that some people don't know how to behave themselves in public. Arrogant, stuck up, entitled brats are the non-tippers. The kind of prick who says, "I work hard for my money," because clearly, everyone else just loafs off and gets paid for dicking around.

region restriction on gaf threads, fuck off

This is the kind of data that is meaningful to me.
Time to put it to use!

You know, it used to bother me a lot. I'm a better person now though than I used to be. But servers just like you would make those same assumptions about me. I could see it in their faces when we would be getting ready to leave and I would tip them handsomely. The shock in their faces and the awkward body language, it used to really get to me.

That and the fact that the servers would ignore the hell out of us and give us terrible service because they assumed since we were black they shouldn't waste their time. There was always that uncomfortable, "Oh!!!! Thank you!!!" followed by them trying to stuff reasonable customer service into the 2 minute period between the tip and us leaving the restaurant to try and make up for the horrible service they gave us.
