Shadow of Mordor: Brutal kills video

I got to play this at PAX last weekend. The line was constantly capped but it was well worth it. They let us play for 20 minutes. The combat was smooth and very reminiscent of batman. The stealth system was also very neat with how quickly you could cross areas. All of this was played on a PS4 and i'm about 99% sure at that time, it was easily 60fps.
Great to hear. Monolith did say they're targeting 60fps on PS4 so that's good.

Man, I thought I might be able to hold out till christmas for this game, but that looks so awesome. I will wait for some reviews I trust first before I buy it though.

Can you provide more details on your impressions of the stealth? Almost all the trailers show off the combat, but I'm curious to what extent you can infiltrate and take out a target without fighting 20 incidental guys every single time.

Oh absolutely. I actually took the more in-direct route when I played. I was literally able to weave my way through multiple orcs, killing only maybe 1 or 2 before stealth killing the captain I had as my target. It's very easy with the wall-scaling and teleportation kills to help cross long distances. It's very satisfying knowing that a lot of these orc bosses can be handled in any fashion you choose(except those with strengths against it).

Thinks for the little impression! Sounds like it is going to be awesome and nice that it seems like it's a pretty solid 60fps.

Hmm that must be why they there's all the screen tearing now; they must have disabled v-sync. That's a little worrisome. I love 60fps, but I hate screen tearing way more than 30fps.

It looked amazing. I already preordered the game well before pax came around and they gave us neat t-shirts in response to that. But yeah, 60fps was definitely in from what we played. Honestly, it didn't seem like a demo since it never ended only until we were told we were done. Oh also, they had devs sitting right next to each console giving us tips and sharing information about the game as well as shooting the shit.

That sounds cool, the thing that keeps me checking up on this game is that every reaction mentions the multiple ways to handle situations. If it carries up on that promise I will probably have to end up getting it eventually, even if I have to play though Zach Snyder's Lord of the Rings to get to the good stuff.

I didn't experience much screen tearing to be honest. It ran excellent and looked even better. Lag was almost a non-issue, even with 10+ more orcs on the screen you fought.

I actually plan on streaming this constantly when they launch so if you want, you can see first-hand. I really wanted to try dominating some of the warchiefs but killing felt so much more satisfying.

Jeez... this game is violent. Not sure if I like how extreme it is.

Really?!

That's great news, a strong stealth system was the last item on my wishlist for this game. September's going to be a slow month...

Looks fun and I'll probably pick it up but it looks like a last gen game.

This cross-gen stuff can't end soon enough.

I really hope I can sneak around with my bow and arrow completely undetected, that's by far my favorite open world play-style.

Also..I don't know much about LOTR lore nor I know when this game is set...but I'm guessing
that it turns out were're playing Sauron's origin story.

LOL

One thing to note is that a lot of these orcs are clueless(rightfully so). Maneuvering yourself around them was fairly easy.

A fair point, but I guess when I say "stealth", I really mean "predator". The appeal isn't about the challenge of avoiding being seen, but more about choosing your engagements and picking off orcs as you see fit. The 20-killstreak video linked earlier in the thread looks a lot like I was looking for as well.

Some of those are Gears of War levels of head explosion. And that music. This guy could've ended the war by himself.

Game looks fun, but the main's guy face looks off to me. Like, a AAA Garshasp.

That was fairly easy to pull off when you have the element of surprised. Now brute forcing it is another story, it's so easy to become overwhelmed and you'll go down much faster then you realize.

I want to like this game, but I just can't manage to give a shit. I am intrigued by the ability to teleport via the bow, however. Will wait for GAF's review and then maybe pick it up on Black Friday.

Only made it half way, but seemed pretty much the same. You can decapitate enemies, but nothing else impacts the character models. Not really different than War in the North. Seems rather half-assed.

Of all the things they could have ripped off, at least it's something entertaining like batman. If they refine that formula this could be a great time.

If this looks like War in the North to you, then sorry but you haven't been paying attention.

I hate Batman's combat. :/

I think Mordor is the most interesting part of LoTR, so this game is perfect. None of the fancy elf or human lands, just nasty, brutal, and dark Mordor.

How open world is this? I was extremely excited to just wonder around Middle-Earth exploring stuff, but the extreme focus on its (albeit awesome) combat is somewhat worrying. I think I'm expecting something different...

It's not completely open world like a GTA game or anything, there are very large open world'ish areas for you to play in. There are things like villages, caves, hidden outposts etc for you to discover, but you shouldn't think it's some type of Elder Scrolls'ish RPG. You can level up aspects of your character, embark on sidequests, etc.

I had a feeling this was coming, there is a fine line between gratuitous violence and violence that serves purpose to the story.

360 spin, slow-motion decapitations would fall in the former category. That and it feels icky combined with the LOTR license, it doesn't fit the universe.

I just don't think Troy Baker's features mesh well with the game's art style. Talion's face looks very naturalistic, whereas everything else is slightly exaggerated.

Gamespot also posted this video of them flawlessly killing twenty orcs...

Looks damn good.

I need this game, I need it now.

I would say that it could fit the Mordor theme, whereas it would be out of place outside of that location in Middle Earth.

Probably the first LotR game I've ever been interested in. Core gameplay looks solid, what the world and story are like remain to be seen. Reviews and impressions will make or break it in my eyes unless there's a demo. I'm always more wary of licensed games.

In a more crowded holiday season it would get squeezed out for me, but after all the delays of games I was planning on getting later this year there's certainly a chance that I'll pick it up.
