Shadow of the Colossus is 10 years old today

Bought this on the ps2 as a impulse buy. Didn't even knew what it was.

10 years later and it's still one of my absolute favorit games.

I was thinking about it recently actually, how close it is to being a decade old it's really crazy. I didn't play SotC until it came to Europe so it won't be until 2016 that it was a decade since I played it, still one of the best games to come from PS2 and potentially of all time.

I still cherish Ico more however.

One of the greatest games of all time, a true gem. Wish I could pop in the HD remaster but my PS3 recently died.

One of the best games ever made for sure.

I played it for the first time I think in 2011 or 2012 (the PS3 collection) and it aged extremely well. Truly a timeless classic.

I still need to play ICO :(

Not without its flaws, but it's an amazing game that I didn't truly appreciate until later (around 2009 or 2010, IIRC). One of the few games that actually made me question and feel bad about what I was doing, and had me thinking a lot about it after it was over. It feels like the timing is right for a replay, too.

Such a shame the game isn't properly emulated yet. It's very slow and taxing the CPU like crazy with a recent build of PCSX2, on my setup anyway.
I believe these (legendary) games would deserve a PC Steam release/remaster or something, at least just for preservation.

Agreed! Preservation is one of the reasons I'm OK with all these recent HD remasters. I would love to replay this game on modern hardware.

There's really nothing else like it.

Truly a gem.

Seriously. There isnt a single game in the industry like it. Which is really weird when you think about it, because the premise and mechanics are genius. I guess most studios dont dare to take Team ICOs approach and fail on the execution, which is the soul of its brilliance. A truly unique game.

In addition to being a masterpiece, this game was probably the most technically advanced game on the PS2. In fact I'm struggling to think of one that even comes close.

This is an awesome article that goes into how they made the game look the way it did. Shadow volumes, object blur, HDR lighting, they were doing or convincingly faking tons of things that would become common place in the next generation. Of course the frame rate took a huge hit, but these things were essential to the experience of the game.

I really wish we would get a direct sequel like it someday. Nothing will ever come close of remembering the gameplay of exploration and colossi slaying in this game, it's just so unique.

TLG will be great, but certainly it's more of a tribute to ICO than SotC. :(

Wow... 10 years really? I feel so freaking old. The wait for TLG is real!
It still is and will forever be in my top 5 favorite games of all time.

hmm haven't been able to figure out the 10th Collosus yet. Been trying to play without a guide and some of these bosses really take some though to figure out. 4th Collosus had me scratching my head for a bit til i figured out I needed to get him to the middle first haha. This game is going by too fast and I'm gonna be sad when it ends :(.

Amazing game, one of my favourites. Would love to get a proper 1080/60 remaster of this and Ico leading up to The Last Guardian release next year.

I fantasize about Sony announcing the following at PGW:

- PS2 software emulation on the PS4, with all PS2 classics already bought on PSN working on day one for everyone.
- In addition to that, Shadow of the Colossus and Ico re-released as PS2 classics, free of charge to whoever already bought the HD remastered version digitally for the PS3.

I got Ico/SotC on PS+. Never played them and was just looking for something else after playing MGS1-4 for the first time. Seems like the perfect timing to play it then.

Should I start with Ico or SotC? Play them both? Or just SotC... Don't know what Ico is. All I know is that you climb big guys in SoTC and hit them^^

I'm so glad i got to play this game
9 years ago while at university It was suggested to me by housemates. They sat with me as over the next few days I got to play what I feel is the best game that came out on Playstation 2.
Thankfully they showed it to me.

So with today being the 10 year anniversary I wanted to pass this game onto my partner, I want her to see how great of a game it is. however I do understand that it might not stand up as well 10 years later. maybe it was a game of its time or maybe it will always be great.
Now I know most of you don't really watch lets plays, let alone like me. However here is Part 1 of me putting lisa on it.

The struggle was real!

I hope it comes to ps4 in someway, a download or backwards compatibility.

SotC is probably a bit more accessible for most people, but you can play them in any order you want, since they aren't linked in any overt way. You wont need knowledge of either game to enjoy the other. If you're a fan of puzzles and platforming then maybe try Ico first, if you're more into action and exploration then SotC. Ico is fairly shorter than SotC, if that matters to you.

Such an amazing experience. It's my favorite game of all time. I played a demo of it on PS2 and was immediately hooked. I ended up getting the game as a gift for Christmas that year and played it nonstop. I, to this day, still play through it a couple of times a year. It's just that amazing to me. There's no other game like it.

I suggest playing in order of release. So, ICO and then SOTC.

ICO is amazing, dont judge it by the first minutes. Most people's first impressions on it are really bad, because of the pacing and the combat, but you will got it. It is also very short. Amazing puzzles, OST, visuals, level design, story and atmosphere. You will find the combat a bit weird and frustrating but give it a chance. It also has one of the best endings of all times.

SOTC is more acessible in the gameplay department and there isnt anything I can add that others didnt say already. The game is a masterpiece. Just play it.

I hope you can see my love for the game too! hence why I wanted her to enjoy it.
Don't me put off by her stubbornness, I think part of the fun was me getting to see someone new approach the game for the first time!
Thanks for checking it out!

Game has its moments but it became a colossal waste of time by the time I got to the 11th collosi. I don't understand what the point was in making the recoil so bad or making the main character stay down long enough to be rammed again for a slow and painful death.

Such an amazing experience, I loved everything about it, the aesthetics, the OST, the atmosphere, the boss fights.

One of the best games ever created.

I'm about to move into a new house and have a few empty frames. I wonder if there are any good looking posters out there.

one of the best games

I think Shadow of the Colossus was a good game but not one of the greatest. But I may think so because I played this game for the first time recently with the HD Collection.

And I still have to play Ico, I tried it some time ago but I was stuck at the begining so I gave up. I might give it another chance.
