Quake 3 on Dreamcast says hello.

7 years ago no one gave a ****, why would it be different this time?

LIVE is the platform. For it to thrive it will need to be continually fed "opaque channel" games. My guess is the next big "opaque channel" game will be project offset. Thats if Microsoft is the publisher.

Quake 3 never achieved the level of success of Counter-Strike. No online game has. So it makes sense to have a game inspired by some of Counter-Strikes game mechanics rather than the more traditional frag-a-thon style shooter.

Totally. I always look forward to heading online to be called a "British J** F** J** British F**, this is an American game, why don't you F*** off and die?!"

PC users are in for quite the thrill ride.

Then explain why it has had the Shadowrun franchise shoe-horned in? On the hopes that some RPG fans will pick it up? The second they realise that it's some lame FPS they will either burn the disc or return it to the store dependant on how insulted they are at the mistreatment of the franchise.

This PC + Consoles playing online together in perfect harmony is a ridiculous pipe-dream. It won't catch on in a big way until the disparity in controls are addressed. All the stupid add-on keypads in the world won't fix that gap.

Apparently FASA spent alot of time working on the controls to make them balanced. It was designed with PC/Console cross-platform play in mind from the start.

it was more a matter of using analytical skills and the development team was very scientific about how they went about making the whole cross-platform thing work. It took them about three months of very hard work - that's three calendar months, mind. If you think of that in months of manpower it was wildly expensive, because not only did we have most of our design team on it but we also had most of our test team on it too. In our test team we had league Halo players and league Counter-Strike players playing against each other, these very hardcore gamers playing it over and over until they thought it was fair.

The network is the real platform, both the XB360 and the PC are just dumb terminals.

The differences of mouse & keyboard vs. a gamepad would considered transparent. Meaning easy to notice. If Shadowrun has made those differences opaque, the ramifications for this achievment are huge.

The creation of an opaque channel for the LIVE network, makes the LIVE network the real computer, not the hardware.

You can't have a fair field in a KB&M vs Gamepad environment. They devs can build a game sensitivity that mice can't exceed but their percision and speed can still be jacked up externally. Any environment that has auto aim or aids is weak nor am I up for fps games slowed down too much because shock comboing and wall jumping are too much for pad players. GE is about the only slow mp based fps that was good. Let the pad babies have an option out for real fun and comp vs players who use skills and not level based matchmaking to stroke their egos under the guise of fun.

Shadow run looks meh to me now that i found out there is no split screen in this turdling.

But whats more important to me is ....SOLID SNAKE X IS BACK?!?!?! WTF?!

Reaching far back in the thread, my apologies. But this thread is kinda off the rails anyway I think.....

To provide some context from the other side, I hate team based shooters. Here's why. I don't want to worry about what X amount of other players are doing. I don't want to worry about how my performance is affecting them, or if they're affecting me. I just want to worry about killing the bad man on my screen as fast as possible while keeping myself alive as long as possible. I like the competition and I like winning. In a team based shooter I may be carried, or dragged down by my team. Not as satisfying as being at the top of a Deathmatch/Slayer/Sharpshooter match. You know you're the best in the room then. Also alot of the negative things about online gaming in general are reduced, quitters, assholes, skill level imbalance... not as much of an issue.

So yeah, I can't wait for Halo. All I got at the moment is Rainbow 6. And people keep turning sharpshooter matches into team sharpshooter on me.
I understand your point. :)

I wish I still had that attraction to solo-multiplayer. But since experiencing such wonders as Chrome Hounds with the great people here at GAF and Splinter Cell with personal friends here in the Netherlands, I simply can't look back anymore. For me personally the teamwork and unique strrategic gameplay is so much more statisfying. It's like being a parent, or something. Give and receive, depend on them and they depend on you. Share responsibility for a great achievement of tactical depth (not just killing the other team).

Also I'm not talking team based shooters. I dislike those as well, it's the same as solo, but 'in a team', like you said. I'm talking different experiences, not comparable to Halo or Shadowrun shooter gameplay like Chrome Hounds and Splinter Cell.

I don't see the appeal of playing against PC gamers on my 360. The whole reason I do most of my online gaming on consoles is because the playing field is much more level (same controls, same hardware, just different TV/sound system).

But seriously, Brimstone, if you're actually interested in marketing, why not get a real marketing job instead of annoying everybody with these stupid threads?

Also, omfg at the title change. Automatically amazing.

Only thing Shadowrun will ever kill is FASA and the dreams of a good Shadowrun game.

Don't see any of these games have an impact on console sales though, right now it's pretty much price driven and will continue to be so for some time. Halo 3 should get a damn good attach rate with 360 owners though and will probably push some old Xbox customers to upgrade if they haven't done so.

And doesn't everyone who wants Halo 3 already own a 360?

Don't trust a dude with white hair about tech predictions I say!

:lol @ thread change while typing this reply.

m

i remember when people said that about the xbox and halo 2. man, that lead to a good few threads of hilarity.

Quake 3 on the dreamcast doesn't really count... since the only console/pc playing that happened there wasn't officially sanctioned, and was the result of a PC mod that ID agressively shut down, since it was based on content ripped out of the dreamcast version of the game.

i know it was planned officially at one point, but it never happened officially.

Shadowrun... i haven't played it. i'm not buying a game without single player, but i know enough to know that their balancing of mouse and keys is a lot smarter than just putting a limit on turning speed.

you can whip around at PC speed, but doing so screws up your accuracy for a bit.

no idea if the balance is spot on, but if it is, then it'll be an impressive achievement, albeit it one i'll never play.

This creates the very real possibility that Sony PC users will be more likely to choose an Xbox 360 over Playstation 3 if they want to experience cross-platform play.

LOL, so wait...Sony PC owners are going to have to buy a 360 so they can play cross-platform with themselves??

How retarded is this guy?

Good god. This shadowrun obsession is bordering on the pathetic.

So, now the trick is to associate Shadowrun with the most anticipated game of this generation, I guess hoping it will allow it to osmose some of the hype?

Wait, that's not how it works?

I got an XBOX / Halo 2 bundle in 2002, Halo 2 was the reason I got into console gaming. Halo 3 will do the same to a lot of people.

I was tempted, but never actually purchased Chrome Hounds, but I was under the impression it was more or less kill the bad people. Is it the customization that gives it the different experience you're talking about?

Splinter Cell I understand, that is quite a different experience.

If I had a bunch of people to play with I would probably be more inclined to play various team shooters, but I play with random jobbers almost all the time. Hence I'd rather just shoot em all.

I should admit though I really like the Battlefield series for some reason. I think it's because the team is so big, I can do my own thing and not have a huge impact one way or another.

Does Shadowrun have a solo deathmatch?

a) amount of players doesn't equate to game quality. And you're fighting a losing battle comparing Resistance to Halo / Halo 2... The games are classic MP games... with the only real rival being CS: Classic...

b) Dedicated servers... Not sure if you noticed but even 2.5 years after release, Halo 2 is still pulling 500K matches a day. During it's peak it was hitting 1.5-2 million/day. That would require an incredible amount of dedicated servers.

CS Classic? Whooa there buddy id be willing to bet that cs source alone is bigger then halo 1,2 online combined.

Good lord, I leave this thread earlier today and we're all having a good time chuckling about Brimstone's post history. I come back, and the thread title's covered in someone's love-juice.

WTF, GAF? WTF? This is why we can't have nice things!

Third out of three.... Come on, EQ Online Adventures sucked. ATM no console has put a decent MMO out there yet. PSO is almost decent but it lacks in depth to become a good MMO.

Halo 2, GeOW, R6V, GRAW2, etc etc.

No, Final Fantasy XI is the title I'm talking about. It's the third most successful MMORPG ever behind WOW and Lineage. It even beat out Everquest for subscriptions I believe...

and 2/5 of the userbase is on PS2.

lol you don't have to read them.:lol

If this game does make it, it will be on PC, and it will happen if it is allowed to be open ended, and manipulated by the community. From my short time with the game, it is a lot of fun. People willing to put the time into it, will have a blast. But just like Counterstrike, if that game had cost 40 to 60 bucks from the begining, it would have failed. If they were smart, they would charge 15 bucks, give us 4 maps, and let the community flowwww. Then when it caught on, add another 4 maps for another 15 and you are on your way.

It really should be the ultimate live arcade game. Instead they are going to charge too much, and it will never catch on because there are not enough people willing to Jump In at a full game price point...

Shadowrun Bukkake orgy continues. An interview with Mitch Gitelman talking Shadowrun, FASA, Crimson Skies, and so on. To the dismay of the NeoGaf psuedo intelligentsia defication brigade, Shadowrun is showered with praise once again.

The interview starts around the 38 minute mark.

Mitch mentions that 13% of the FASA workforce at its peak consisted of the female gender, probably one of the highest in the industry.
