Maybe they'll draw from the Invincible Iron Man storyline where terrorists use modified Stark technology to turn people into human bombs.
Eh.. depending on how they do it, could be lame. It's like Spider-man fighting a hypnotist.

I want to see the Mandarin or AIM. Heck, I'll take Whirlwind.

I really don't think the Avengers stuff ruined anything at all. They came for 5 minutes, said their bit and left. Plus, the way it was done, offering him redemption in a low point of the movie, was just fine. People seem to latch onto the Avengers parts as if they were the main problem. Its problems were elsewhere, namely boring villains with incredibly little depth to them, and the extended clusterfuck of an ending that there was in 2.

I thought 1 was good (always found the OMG BEST THING EVER people to be tinted by the fact that it came out during a really shitty period of movies), and 2 was decent. Here's hoping 3 is great.
Well I'll just disagree. I didn't have any problem with the villains. I liked the action and the WM subplot stuff. What I thought was boring and unnecessary was Black Widow and Happy having horrible action/comedy scenes together. She and Sam Jackson should never have been in this movie. Plenty of people I saw it with never saw the after credit scene from the first movie so had no idea where Sam of any of the Avengers stuff came from and I had to explain it all to them so I question how they have implementing the plot device.

Great post. The Avengers stuff was my favorite part of the movie. The rest was sub-par.

I'm curious if they'll move forward with a second Avengers if it's succesful, or if they're just going to have a one-off team up and then continue with these enclosed stories.

Both.

Best parts of Iron Man were more realistic in nature anyway, so real-world villains isn't much of a death sentence for the flick. IM2 was more of a traditional superhero film and it sucked because of it.

It's amazing how saying Iron Man should fight real world dues immediately delegitimizes 2 even further by showing how much of a rehash it was to have him fight another robot villain. This shit's off to a good start, I hope they come up with something clever here.

Favreau wasn't the issue with Iron man.

Marvel was.

Nothing wrong with Favreau as far as I'm concerned. I liked both movies, but weren't Marvel meddling too much with the movie which was the impetus behind Favreau wanting out of the franchise?

If they did it with the first 2, no reason why they'd stop with the 3rd.

Shane Black is NOT writing Iron Man 3

The writer is Drew Pearce, who also wrote the script for the Runaways movie (also likely coming in 2013)

I haven't followed up on this movie for a while but I found this interesting..

Deadline has the news, but adds only that they hear he will “start from scratch and work closely with Black.” The latter point is something we’d expect — any film like this would see the screenwriter working closely with the director. I’m not sure what to make of ‘start from scratch,’ however, because we don’t know what sort of story material has been kicking around the Marvel offices. I’m hoping that Shane Black’s recent comments about the film — that it would be more real-world oriented, and play a bit like a Tom Clancy thriller, without the addition of other Marvel heroes — still hold true.
More real world orientated sounds cool to me. But what a contrast to the more fantastical stuff relating to The Avengers, with elements like Thor and The Hulk.

...so does that mean we can get comic book villains instead of real world villains again?

If Marvel wasn't such a bitch about creative control of their properties, in a perfect world we'd have Mandarin in IM3 and Ultron in the Avengers (Subtitled: The Ultimates).

<Shane Black> I want to do something different than what you want

<Marvel> Drew Pearce is now writing Iron Man 3

<Shane Black> ...my check is still good right?

No, it wasn't.

Everyone is quick to blame Marvel for shoehorning in easter eggs, continuity crossovers, etc. into these movies, not realizing that it was Favreau and Norton (who rewrote Hulk's script) who included these things in the first place.
