Shane Kim Q+A at DICE

Biggest news in this Q&A is Banjo is a holiday 2008 title! Which means they gotta unveil it sometime soon.

Saddest news is that Alan Wake is 'not necessarily' a 2008 title. Hopefully Kim is just playin' with us there :(

I was kind of hoping they were going to release it in summer or early autumn, as with the original..bring back memories of those nice N64 days .

Alan Wake no-show for 2008....Damn Remedy, how can they keep solvent when they release about 1 title every 4-5 years? They must be pilfering funds from Futuremark or something.

Banjo and Fable 2 for holiday release...yay! Surprised about Fable 2 being the 'best looking' first party title, I would have thought Rare's titles this year would be leading the charge (not to mention Gears 2).

Is it possible that there are unannounced projects that will be released in 08? Other than Gears 2? I don't think so. The biggest 1st party games for them this year will probably be Halo Wars and Too human. I really doubt Banjo will sell to their base.

That's just what Shane Kim thinks. I think Fable 2 might end looking really good artistically, but from what i've seen so far, their tech doesn't seem to be very impressive.

I trust rare will be owning other Devs with their tech.

Again, i doubt that they will show new stuff that isn't for 09 between GDC and E3. But Fable 2 will be big for them, Ninja Gaiden 2 if it's marketed can be big for them.

And your doubts about Banjo, rather lame doubts, what is their base again? Banjo if it's good and it's marketed, it has mass appeal, unlike Viva Pinata. It can turn out a pretty big deal.

I'm guessing they will mostly be unveiling the opening of the doors of XNA User created content -> Marketplace.

They will be trusting alot on 3rd parties, like GTA, maybe lock down an exclusive from a 3rd party, and run with it.

I think they'll have some new stuff for 08.

Last year they published about 10 or so titles, I think?

We know so far for this year about 7 or 8. I don't think MS will be publishing fewer titles this year than last, Shane Kim seemed to even say as much in the IGN DICE interview, that it should be the same or more. So there should be some more new games to be unveiled, unless I'm counting wrong :p

There's a difference between hyping a game 3 years away from release, and hyping the game less than 12 months away from release.

The difference is going to be the fact that they will be hyping things that are already in the game, instead of things still on a drawing board or being tested.

You don't think it's possible at all that MGS has any other 1st or 2nd party titles that have been in development that they haven't shown yet? Nothing? Is MS just packing up their shit and going home?

Kim is clearly excited about this one, referring to it as a major part of Microsoft’s 2008 holiday season. “I’m trying to do [lead creator Peter [Molyneux]’s job a little bit, because Peter was accused of over-hyping “Fable” 1. And so we’ve been keeping Peter really focused. I obviously believe it’s going to be a huge title.

He confirmed that MolyneuxÂ’s Microsoft-owned Lionhead Studios isnÂ’t just doing “Fable 2″ at the moment. “TheyÂ’ve got other things that theyÂ’re working on,” Kim said. “PeterÂ’s a very creative guy, so heÂ’s got other ideas that theyÂ’re always processing.” Lionhead fans, Kim said heÂ’s never seen MolyneuxÂ’s mystery project “Dimitri,” itself the subject of many Molyneux interview teases, but that “PeterÂ’s talked about it to me a bunch.”

Molyneux is scheduled to make a major presentation on “Fable 2″ at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco next week.

This is THE game of 2008 for me. Most wanted game since Halo 3!!!

See, I think that too. Fable 2 looks alright, what you would expect from a next-gen game, but given that Rare is MS's main first party studio and where a lot of R&D is done, I'm expecting Rare to blow people away by the time they are ready to show off Banjo Threeie and whatever other retail game they are currently working on.

I want to believe!

Alan Wake is a 2009 title? :( Well in a way that's good. It will probably be the game that pushes me to buy a 360, this way the 360 will be much cheaper when Alan Wake finally comes out.

Alan Wake sounds like a maybe.. perhaps he just doesn't want to confirm it as a 2008 title yet, for added surprise when/if they do.

Hahaha I have been thinking the same thing since I got my income tax and spent it on a new LCD. I know I will be missing LO and few games but by next income tax I should be set up to buy one and most likely pre-order AW. Mainly I will be buying JRPG's for it.

Not any big games anyway. Kingdom under fire was a MGS game and it got no hype, probably because they had no confidence in it.

Alan Wake isn't a huge title.

If it was a movie it would be like trying to position Zodiac in the same position as Transformers (Gears Of War).

Sure it will make some cash, but it will be more of critically acclaimed game that is loved by gamers. It's the kind of game you wanna have, but not the kind of game that changes things by itself.

hmm very essentric taste. I admire that

Fable really disapointed me. It is a classic example of why JRPGS triumph western ones. The story was foolish, the game as a whole was a bore of "you make your own story" and although the gameplay was ok it lacked anything special.

definitely more exited about Alan Wake though.

banjo 3 a holiday title? they better market the fuck out of it and no more gears or whatever having all of MS attention.

I would hope Microsoft have learned from the VP/Gears issue. They probably assumed the TV show would be enough marketing but it was the adults that they needed to tempt as well as the kids.

A little kid isn't going to get their parents to spend 350 (400 when VP released) on a console. If MS doesn't do some major price cuts, it's going to be hardcore banjo fans who buy the game, and MS probably won't market it that well.

wot? Have not played a JRPG with a good story EDIT: Scratch that, loved Skies

Fable charmed the pants off me. I loved everything about it. Just bursting into a village with MAX strength, blowing the doors and windows out and watching its residents panick was incredible.

One of the best games of 2004

360 Arcade will be $199 by the end of the year... (If not, Microsoft will be extremely slow at price reduction :|).
The problem with Microsoft's lineup in 2008 is that it is quite broad, but it has only niche titles. A sci-fi shooter like Perfect Dark 2 or Gears of War 2 would be a really nice addition.

great news about Banjo and Fable 2, hope both turn out great

but you got to be fucking kidding me if Alan Wake doesn't come out this year, they been showing off the game for 2 damn years

Bizarre and Bioware talk.

First time MS has said that they sold Bizarre to focus resources elsewhere (turn 10 is mentioned). Before they've always said that Bizarre requested the move.

Is this legit? Anyone a part of this?

Yeah. I have been a member of MS Beta's for over a year now. I have only got to test some small PC games and one XBLA title that was created just to test netcode called BUg Bash.

Bizarre never requested the move. Activision flashed the cash, Ms didn't flash back, between buying bizarre and spending resources to grow their In House stuff, they opted for the later.

Don Mattrick philosophy already at work.

They better do a much better job of pushing Banjo-Kazooie than they have for past Rare games. They have shown effort in the past, but every bit of it missed its mark. They need to hit the sweet spot this time.
