Shenmue 1 & 2, what were the devs doing?

I bet enthusiasts will port it better if provided with sources
I found it quite entertaining that within 48 hours there was a widescreen fix for the cutscenes. When i heard that listed by John as a negative (That cutscenes arent widescreen) i was like ''Come on, now that was do-able to get patched.''

Oh you're just trying to get my goat.
I have no idea what this expression means. I presume its a allegory for something?

Well I still believe the game is a buggy turd and anyone who, in good faith would espouse the beliefs which you do has his priorities messed up. You had me going for a while, redneckerz.
Its not so much what you say, but how you say it. You remember the I don't like thing meme from years ago? That's how it comes across. But alright, ill concede that the game has bugs. But then you have to look at what kind of bugs they are.

both games are really great.
We gamers have forgot what is like playing "true" games and not caring about frames and dts.
The truth is that both games have quite a lot of bugs and issues but the nostalgia and the feeling you get while playing shenmue series is amazing and i really don't care about the installation footprint or the not so great audio quality.
Just give me more games like shenmue 1&2.
If only sega could republish more legendary games from the saturn/dreamcast era like panzer dragoon saga, enemy zero, burning rangers, D, blue stinger etc.
I would be the happiest gamer in the world!

I am having a hard time getting through the game without the use of faqs. It takes me a considerable amount of time to go from person to person because finding the right person to talk to is a crapshoot. I go to aida florist and the girl is only there sometimes, maybe it's an am/pm split.

I'm up to ajiichi chinese restaurant and I've played it for like 3 days.. yea laugh it up

I dig it though
Glad you're liking it, it's my favorite game ever.

Your progress is... interesting. Instead of wasting time looking at guides, just talk to everyone. Pretend you are Ryo and think about who the best people to ask things would be. I guarantee you'll make better progress that way. There are one or two parts in the game that are kinda confusing and may make you want to check a guide, but you're nowhere near those parts yet. Remember the NPCs for the most part live their own lives and that's why they're not always around. It's very much a "be at the right place at the right time" kinda game, but you can usually figure out those times and places easily by paying attention to the environment and what people say...

I saw this over at ShenmueDojo, with John from Digital Foundry chiming in, which is appreciated.

The PC Gamer interview is also telling.
PC Gamer: https://www.pcgamer.com/how-sega-brought-shenmue-back-to-life-on-pc/

"The original code was written by Japanese developers, so all the comments are in Japanese. We used Google Translate a lot to try and get a handle on what the code was doing, but it's often not clear. Shenmue 1 had the additional problem for us that the game logic was written in a separate scripting language and ALL the function names and variables were in Japanese too! "

Sega threw a very complicated game to a small team in the UK with no Japanese fluent members. Shame on Sega.
