Sherlock Holmes (2009) - is it really that bad or...

I've watched and enjoyed most of the Granada Holmes from the 80s, and can live with a thematic departure for a modern audience.

Assuming you're missing a "the" instead of a "ly", then no, it didn't at all.

what it did it wrong if we talk about his portrayal? I haven't watched any Sherlock movies before that one, I only read books. He's less frantic, emotional and obscure there but you've to entertain people.

I've noticed a lot of SH09 backlash on GAF lately. Strange to me: I thoroughly enjoyed the film and put it in my top 10 "Hollywood" movie of the decade.

Well, at least that answers the OP's question about whether Hollywood's standards have slipped in modern times.

In simplest terms, Sherlock Holmes is not an action movie hero as he is in this film. Plus, the film has an awfully obnoxious case of the "not-gays"; the emphasis on female romance was ridiculous for Holmes. RDJ performed the role well, but the writing just wasn't as true to the source material as it could have been. Needed more alienating aspergers drug addict and less JUDO-CHOPPING HOTTIE.

See the Moffat series for a good Holmes adaptation, see the 2009 film for a good action-adventure movie.

It's just dumb entertainment. I enjoy those types of movies really. They don't always get the best reviews, but I find them entertaining to watch. I like big explosions and lots of action. :D

Sherlock Holmes is a good film. It's not a great one, but goddamn, it's entertaining.

And the sequel looks great.

Noomi Rapace + Jared Harris = Pure Awesome

Not only me then.

See, it's totally predictable so it fails to do its job. That's all.

I guess I just got enjoyment out of watching Holmes and Watson interact with each other. They had a fun relationship.

I definitely recommend Star Trek for entertainment.

Moon is also very good. Very intriguing story and beautiful OST.

There's also Source Code coming out on Bluray. Made by the same director that made Moon.

District 9 is a fun and tense action/thriller. Definitely recommend it.

For animation, How to Train your Dragon, Toy Story 3 and Rango.

I was expecting the reaction to be "No Shaun is there." >_>

Shaun > Scott > Fuzz, suck it haters
As an Edgar Wright fan, but not familiar with the comic, I found Scott Pilgrim unwatchable.

Shaun is the better movie, but Fuzz is an easier watch so I've seen it much more. The problem is Shaun is a little too successful in hitting those tragic moments, more than any other zombie movie I've ever seen. The pathos is so thick, but never feels melodramatic.

That was certailnly well done. But also predictable. I enjoyed scenery, decorations and general design.

Fair enough if you don't like Scott. If you like it, you love it. I can see the opposite reaction being similarly extreme. Also, the script and characters aren't really Wright as much as O'Malley, which stands out. (I still rank it second best >_>)

I agree about the tragic parts of Shaun. That's what happens when you love those types of films so much I guess, you end up making a film that does it just as good even when you aimed to make a piss-take. Hot Fuzz is so fun, but I don't think it nails the character moments as well as Shaun or Scott, so I can't acknowledge it as better than either.

This is not a film but there's a contemporary TV series called Sherlock.

You should watch it if you like Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes does whatever he needs to to solve the case. He's described as a champion boxer. How would he become a champion boxer without practice? As a Sherlock Holmes fan, I thought it was a fantastic adaptation.

Absolutely agreed, it's brilliant. I wish seasons had more than three episodes though, but at least they're 1.5 hours each.

Its because you saw the wrong Sherlock Holmes film

Film snob hates movie. News at 11.

Loved Sherlock Holmes and looking forward to more RDJ and Jude Law.
Not liking a mediocre movie that makes you a film snob?

Op voluntarily hasn't watched more than two 'Hollywood' movies this year. I can only conclude his range is limited to subbed Asian film and anime.

Also OP. Watching True Blood doesn't mean your not a film snob, it just means you have terrible taste.

No, I play videogames instead of watching movies.

They are bringing out another season too. Not sure when though.

I didn't think it was nearly as much an action blockbuster as everyone says. I was surprised by how few big action scenes there were, most of the film really was Holmes doing his detective thing and annoying Watson, which I liked.

Trailer for the sequel looks like a mindless action film, though. Yawn.

Chances are you've seen some of these but these entertained me (all fairly recent);

The Departed
Shutter Island
Toy Story 3
The Prestige
Moon
Fantastic Mr Fox
Star Trek

Have you seen some of the Pixar movies? Those are usually pretty fun. A recent one is Toy Story 3, and I think it's pretty good. You might also like Rango. It's a lot of fun if you like westerns. Yeah. I ran out of ideas.

Watch all the movies that were nominated for an academy award this year and last. Except The Kids are All Right, fuck that movie.

YES

The Pixar movies still feel pretty fresh.

yeah. you should just watch james bond movies they're much better than sherlock holmes

I've watched them all from 10 to 30 times each one when I was a kid.

I'd recommend Taken if you want an entertaining film. It's short, tense and Liam Neeson is a total badass.

The new James Bond films are pretty cool too.

I liked Casino Royale but the film after that SUCKED.

I might get Taken, heard a lot of praise.

Autumn, and again only three episodes sadly.

Taken is very fun, but don't expect depth or unpredictability :P.

you know I don't expect depth or unpredictability but Killzone 3 was less predictable than Sherlock Holmes. Like I didn't know what will happen to this character or that one. In Sherlock Holmes I knew she won't die EVER, so why bothering with all these tense scenes? The only thing that I didn't predict was the thing Moriarty was after and the nature of supernatural stuff. That was neat.

Have you ever seen the Приключения Шерлока Холмса и доктора Ватсона serial? If you weren't entertained by the hollywood movie though I guess you probably wouldn't enjoy these...

The answer is Tron: Legacy, it's dumb but doesn't try to hide it and it's an entertaining ride all the way through.

Also The Ghost Writer, Hobo with a Shotgun and Les amours imaginaires, though those don't really fit with anything you said besides being entertaining. They almost fit within the time frame you gave though!
Fully expected to hate Tron Legacy, but I've actually watched it a couple of times again since, something I've never done since LOTR. Just a fun movie, no BS. Great music, slick art design. I thought Jeff Bridges' character was really cool too. "Biodigital jazz, man" lol.

As for Sherlock Homes, I watched about half of it and I couldn't take it anymore. Just so boring, and it didn't feel anything like the books. Really bizarre casting of Holmes and Watson, too. The new BBC Sherlock is amazing, can't wait for the next episodes.

yes, if you mean a russian one. But I watched it as a kid which means I haven't really watched it. But I catch it on TV sometimes and I think it's the best adaptation from what I've seen so far. They didn't nail his "martial arts" training though but may be they did, I just don't really remember.

Reviews are pretty glowing so if you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes you should get it. May be I will. Soviet movies are very light on action, but actors do some really fascinating stuff.

Yeah I was the same way. After a month of doing nothing but analyzing literature (or rather the last hectic month of a year of analyzing literature!) it was my choice for the evening of the final day. I put in the BD and turned up the bass and honestly I couldn't have chosen a better movie for that particular moment. The only thing I knew going in was that it had a cool look and a great soundtrack, and the rest of the movie didn't get in the way of that. Plain and simple fun. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it!

Such a pleasant surprise.
