I've noticed a lot of SH09 backlash on GAF lately. Strange to me: I thoroughly enjoyed the film and put it in my top 10 "Hollywood" movie of the decade.

In simplest terms, Sherlock Holmes is not an action movie hero as he is in this film. Plus, the film has an awfully obnoxious case of the "not-gays"; the emphasis on female romance was ridiculous for Holmes. RDJ performed the role well, but the writing just wasn't as true to the source material as it could have been. Needed more alienating aspergers drug addict and less JUDO-CHOPPING HOTTIE.

See the Moffat series for a good Holmes adaptation, see the 2009 film for a good action-adventure movie.

It's just dumb entertainment. I enjoy those types of movies really. They don't always get the best reviews, but I find them entertaining to watch. I like big explosions and lots of action.

I definitely recommend Star Trek for entertainment.

Moon is also very good. Very intriguing story and beautiful OST.

There's also Source Code coming out on Bluray. Made by the same director that made Moon.

District 9 is a fun and tense action/thriller. Definitely recommend it.

For animation, How to Train your Dragon, Toy Story 3 and Rango.

Shaun is the better movie, but Fuzz is an easier watch so I've seen it much more. The problem is Shaun is a little too successful in hitting those tragic moments, more than any other zombie movie I've ever seen. The pathos is so thick, but never feels melodramatic.

Fair enough if you don't like Scott. If you like it, you love it. I can see the opposite reaction being similarly extreme. Also, the script and characters aren't really Wright as much as O'Malley, which stands out. (I still rank it second best >_>)

I agree about the tragic parts of Shaun. That's what happens when you love those types of films so much I guess, you end up making a film that does it just as good even when you aimed to make a piss-take. Hot Fuzz is so fun, but I don't think it nails the character moments as well as Shaun or Scott, so I can't acknowledge it as better than either.

Sherlock Holmes does whatever he needs to to solve the case. He's described as a champion boxer. How would he become a champion boxer without practice? As a Sherlock Holmes fan, I thought it was a fantastic adaptation.

I didn't think it was nearly as much an action blockbuster as everyone says. I was surprised by how few big action scenes there were, most of the film really was Holmes doing his detective thing and annoying Watson, which I liked.

Trailer for the sequel looks like a mindless action film, though. Yawn.

I liked Casino Royale but the film after that SUCKED.

you know I don't expect depth or unpredictability but Killzone 3 was less predictable than Sherlock Holmes. Like I didn't know what will happen to this character or that one. In Sherlock Holmes I knew she won't die EVER, so why bothering with all these tense scenes? The only thing that I didn't predict was the thing Moriarty was after and the nature of supernatural stuff. That was neat.

The answer is Tron: Legacy, it's dumb but doesn't try to hide it and it's an entertaining ride all the way through.

Also The Ghost Writer, Hobo with a Shotgun and Les amours imaginaires, though those don't really fit with anything you said besides being entertaining. They almost fit within the time frame you gave though!

As for Sherlock Homes, I watched about half of it and I couldn't take it anymore. Just so boring, and it didn't feel anything like the books. Really bizarre casting of Holmes and Watson, too. The new BBC Sherlock is amazing, can't wait for the next episodes.

yes, if you mean a russian one. But I watched it as a kid which means I haven't really watched it. But I catch it on TV sometimes and I think it's the best adaptation from what I've seen so far. They didn't nail his "martial arts" training though but may be they did, I just don't really remember.

Reviews are pretty glowing so if you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes you should get it. May be I will. Soviet movies are very light on action, but actors do some really fascinating stuff.

Yeah I was the same way. After a month of doing nothing but analyzing literature (or rather the last hectic month of a year of analyzing literature!) it was my choice for the evening of the final day. I put in the BD and turned up the bass and honestly I couldn't have chosen a better movie for that particular moment. The only thing I knew going in was that it had a cool look and a great soundtrack, and the rest of the movie didn't get in the way of that. Plain and simple fun. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it!
