SHIFT 2: UNLEASHED |OT| Is there still need for speed?

That's Shift 2's biggest problem in a nutshell. You can tune your way to a good time, but you have to do the work.
It's too bad, too.

I can't help but think Shift would have a bigger following if it gave a better impression out of the box.

Finished 100% and the only real nag I have with this game now is the bump and stick forced on collisions and the bump from behind to lift off the ground your opponent thingie. Other than that, i'll be waiting for the last even to get unlocked.

Agreed. My first impression was that while it looked and sounded great, it played like crap. Glad I got it on sale. I'm sure I'll give it another go, but its days are numbered... 26 of them, to be exact.

Looking for a bit of pre-purchase reassurance.

Would this be a good title for my fiancée who wants something fast paced, with tuning/livery and something that can be forgiving (in general or through difficulty sliders)?

GT5 was too sterile (poor livery/car modding) and not arcadey enough for her. She was a fan of the old NFS games going years back, and having the ability to mod/customize a car regardless of how ridiculous it would be in reality.

New to this game, loved S1 (call me crazy), and was wondering if anyone had any settings for the Microsoft wheel (for Xbox). I find the settings I have ok, but it won't drive in a straight line... Seems to track left and right uncontrollably. Any help?

This is probably frowned upon, but bump for answer *^^^^
I personally cannot help you with it, as I do not own that wheel, but you could try selecting a different wheel, reboot/restart game and select the right wheel in the options menu again and manually map each function and save settings.

You also might have a look trough this tread at NoGrip (The Shift 2 Controller Set-Up Thread) and if needed ask the question there, more change for an answer ;)

Thanks mate.
I'll have a look at that website.

Also, sometimes it feels like the wheel disconnect mid corner... What's up with that?

From my experience on the PC, the higher the framerate the better the response, so could it be game struggling to keep up with whats on screen and in the process the FFB struggles?

If NoGrip is not of help, you might have a better change at this site: RaceDepartment , a little less PC orientated. ;)

Quite enjoying Shift 2. I'm mostly just painting Ford Escorts orange and then drifting around taking photos but now that I've got the handling and suspension tuning down, I'm finding the game rather enjoyable. It's got an awesome collection of cars, particularly the 70's Legends stuff.

Playing it on PC and getting about 40-50fps on high settings. I know I should drop the settings but I'm finding it tolerable to play and it looks sooooo good.

Shift 1 was awesome. If anyone gives you grief for that opinion just come & tell me. I'll shank them.

It's on the Xbox and it seems to go loose mid corner, and feel odd on the straights until it kicks back in again. Still doesn't ruin the experience for me however, it's only happening rarely.

Both have been the definitive racers for use on my very basic Xbox and ms wheel setup. No other game actually makes your heart rate go up and give you sweats. It's very intense.
I got a mate into it recently, he was adimant he didn't like it at first (using controller) but now he has a wheel his opinion has changed he rushed out and bought unleashed. :)

Also, I specifically bought it to race the FC rx7 around Bathurst - best racing experience on consoles without a doubt IMO.

I still love playing Shift 1. I'm one of the few that think that the graphics actually look better than 2 on the 360. Cockpits look cleaner and it's less jaggie in general. Plus the Ferrari cockpits are gorgeous.
Still enjoy 2 a ton as well.

With tuning and tweaking settings the handling isn't that bad at all.

I'm jealous of you pc mod guys.

Around 45 is for me also enough, low 40 and I will adjust settings to up the FPS. Did enjoy the game, it is just a shame they had to make some compromises in the handling model (softness), but it is still a great game and best track selection I have seen in any game.

Looking forward to Slightly Mads next project, without the EA influence ;)

Wouldn't that be great. Although the nfs car models are ok. The physics to me seemed a pretty good combination in terms of realism and fun factor.

But yeah, I think 2 had a bit less graphical edge than other franchises, but it did have more real life 'effects' added, like bloom and night racing which added to the immersion.

To me, the only downfall (being an Aussie) was the lack of Australian manufacturers to match the inclusion of many an Aussie's 'greatest race track in the world' - Mount Panorama, Bathurst.

Would have been cool to relive some of the golden era races there.

Good to see some fellow fans in here, shift generally gets a bad wrap in other game's OT's, I don't see why. Bitterness perhaps? Pretty graphics equal better game?

I do not avoid women, GAF, but I do deny them my essence.
tbh, I think all racing games should implement Shift 2's feature of having the driver look into the turn. It makes the whole experience far more immersive for me. I imagine after I get my PS3 situation fixed, going back to GT5 will be a bit awkward.

Wow... Chris Rado's car is kept at World Electronics, quite literally a couple blocks from my house. Very cool to find him in this game.

Anyone still playing this now that Forza 4 is out? I loved the original but I've been holding out for a Steam sale with #2.

One of the arguments with the last was the floaty feel of the cars before u customized the settings. Anyone have preset for a more realistic handling car in #2?

Never has a game frustrated me as much as this game has. Glad it was free. If there was a way to rage break a downloaded title I would do it.

I fucking love the SHIFT series.

But fuck me sideways did they fuck up some shit in there. If only they fixed the issues. If only EA fucking let SMS do it their way. EA you sons a beeches. Why oh why did you not take these issues seriously. This series could've went far. It could've been huge. But no, you had to fuck up everything. You bunch of tossers.
Now give me NFS U 3, PS 2 and SHIFT 3 to make up for the shit you've caused....and they better be fucking good this time...assholes..

What exactly is wrong with the game in comparison to the first?

I've enjoyed the Shift 1 demo on the 360. Should i just pick that one up, or Shift 2? Is the handling the same? Does Shift 2 feel different, gameplay-wise (there's no Shift 2 demo)?

How are the campaigns in both games? How much do i need to use the bumpers in those games?

Thanks!

There are 2 helmet cams. One is exactly like the first game which doesn't move. The other one makes the head look to the apex of the corners. The one that moves has the actual helmet on the border of the television.

Finally got around to playing Shift 2 as my backlog is winding down. Before I continue I just want to say that I love racing games and I beat the first Shift to 100% (Platinum trophy). Ughh, Shift 2.

I think that this is the worst racing game I have ever played. Graphics aside there is something wrong with the way this game handles. I've tried numerous vehicles and they feel like the suspension is made out of sausage. It's spongy and floaty. Never have I played such a terrible racing game let alone a NFS. I tried all the different control settings and the novice controls give you zero control while the elite ones are sausage controls. Shift 1 handles so much better.

I tried numerous tuning options, different Dualshocks and a Driving Force GT Pro wheel and still the same shit.

Fuck this game.

So, I played this game again, after a year, and installed the most recent Unofficial Community Patch. This patch solves a lot of issues, and the game itself is still one of my favorite racing games. The amount of tracks, the night racing, the sound, the cockpit experience, still love it!

Thinking of picking this up since I've seen it at $20. Know I'm kinda raising the dead here since it has been a few years, but for those who have played it how is the racing experience and has your opinion of it changed since you played other racers?

The racing against other cars is actually better than in most racing games, the problem is that the handling is terrible. I'm not being hyperbolic, the handling makes this almost unplayable.

One of the biggest disappointments this gen because the track list is by far the best of every racer this gen, night effects are well done, racing AI is not completely retarded. Unfortunately the handling model, the most important thing, is broken.

Too bad about the handling hope its fixed in the next one. Sad to say, but probably will skip out on this one with that in mind. Sounds like this game could've have one heck of an experience if the handling was good.
