Shining Force: Save Our Series Campaign.

I’ve gotten moderator permission for this, so we are good to go there.

I am a frequent visitor of Shining Force Central, probably the most active, relatively, Shining Force community out there. Recently the owner of the site, Moogie, has launched what she dubs “Phase IV” of the Save Our Series campaign.

A few years back, she held other campaigns where she and other members of the community wrote letters to Sega and Camelot to sort of get them to rekindle their friendship to help revive the Shining Force line of games.

While it was met with positive responses from both companies, it didn’t do too much for reviving the Shining Force series as it once was, but it is believed to have at least caused Sega to look at the Shining series again. Despite Sega focusing on the Shining series once more, instead of getting Shining Force IV or something similar, instead we got Shining Force Neo, Shining Force Exa, Shining Tears, Shining Wind, Shining Soul, Shining Soul II, Shining Hearts, and Shining Force Feather. Shining Force Feather was the closest to the classic Shining games we were going to get, but it never made it out in English, and most likely won’t with the recent closure of Flight Plan.

I was going to make this topic a few days ago, but never got around to it, but after seeing the topic dealing with which series fans have been shafted the most and seeing how many people posted Shining Force, I can see an even bigger reason to post this.

NeoGAF seems to have a large number of Shining Force fans, probably more than the Shining Force Central. So, I believe this will be a wonderful place to start talking about the Shining Force: Save our Series campaign.

What is Shining Force?

Shining Force is a SRPG series that was first released in 1992 on the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive. It played similarly to Fire Emblem, except for the fact that it was no longer “Player Turn/Enemy turn”, but instead movement was based on a speed stat.

Since 1992, six Shining Force titles have been released (8 if you count the three scenarios of Shining Force III as separate games):

Shining Force - 1992

Shining Force II - 1994

Shining Force III: Scenarios 1 – 3 + Premium Disc - 1997 - 1998

Shining Force: Final Conflict - 1995; full English translation - 2005

Shining Force and Shining Force II have been released numerous times on either various Sega compilation discs, Wii Virtual Console, XBLA, and, for Shining Force, the iOS.

The Shining Force, and Shining series in general, games were made by the Takahashi brothers: Hiroyuki and Shujo. They would eventually go on to form Camelot Soft, who are best known now for Golden Sun and the Mario Tennis games.

In many interviews, Camelot has mentioned they are interested in trying to work more on the Shining series, but unfortunately, all of the rights are owned by Sega.

GamesTM has a great interview with Hiroyoki about his experience making the Shining series and about Sega’s general asshattery.

http://www.gamestm.co.uk/retro/behind-the-scenes-shining-force/

The Shining Force games had, and still have, a large cult following around the word, as I could tell by the thread that was just posted: “Gamings Longest-Suffering Fanbase”.

What is the campaign?

The campaign started in October of this year, shortly after gamesTM, a magazine in the UK, featured Shining Force III on the cover as part of their Top 100 games article.

For those who have not kept up with Sega and Camelot’s relationship, shortly before the release of Scenario 3 of Shining Force III, Sega stopped focusing on the games, instead to focus their attention on the Dreamcast. This left Camelot in an awkward position. They completed the scenarios and released them, and even rewarded those who purchased all three Scenarios with the Premium Disc. Unfortunately, due to Sega’s cock up, this had an effect on the company’s relationship, and hidden within the code for the Premium Disc, the head of Camelot basically said they wouldn’t work with Sega again.

However, there was a little ray of hope. For gamesTM to publish the Shining Force III art work, they had to approach Sega, who in turn, had to approach Camelot in order to obtain the materials. This allowed a small door to be open that could possibly blossom into a partnership once more.

Because of this, the Shining community has taken this small ray of hope and has decided to form a campaign that focuses on talking with Camelot directly.

All of this information you will find at the end of this post at the link.

The Purpose of the Campaign

The focus of Shining Force SOS is to show Camelot how much we love their original Shining series. Ultimately we hope this may encourage them to re-establish their relationship with Sega. We will also notify Sega and Nintendo of the “bundle of love” when it is sent on to Camelot and humbly ask that Sega consider reconnecting with Camelot.

Why start it now?

Not only are they starting it now because of that small ray of hope, but also the Shining Force series turns 20 on March 29, 2011. What better way to show Camelot love than to shower them with all support from the Shining community on the 20th birthday.

What you can do to help

• Write a letter
A few people have already hand-written letters to send to Camelot. The purpose of the letters is to explain just how much the Shining Force games meant to you, or some special memory you had about them.
• Share photos
This could be of your collection of games or any memorabilia you have.
• Make a video
The campaign has set up a special YouTube channel for videos that will be sent to Camelot. As of now, about 20 videos have been posted.

I would like the state the main purpose of this campaign is to not so much get Camelot to remake Shining Force III or completely mend their relationship with Sega (At least not directly), but to show them just how much love their games still have and how many people still enjoy playing them.
I know just recently I went through and played Shining Force again on my iPod Touch and have even started a new game on Shining Force III: Scenario 2 with the excellent translation patches that have been coming out recently.

So far, the campaign has raised money to have adverts in two UK based magazines:
GamesTM and RetroGamer. I might add, that the money for these two adverts was raised by the community members themselves and not from advertising of anything else.

Not only that, the campaign also has had people posting videos to their Youtube site:

http://www.youtube.com/user/ShiningForceSOS

A couple of my favorites:

http://www.youtube.com/user/ShiningForceSOS#p/a/21D351AEA112EE7E/0/zwqwMDKtB6w

http://www.youtube.com/user/ShiningForceSOS#p/c/21D351AEA112EE7E/13/pTAW2rLdieU

They also want people to write what the Shining Force series means to them.

Personally, it is one of my favorite series of games. Despite the newer entries, which I still play, Shining Force and Shining Force III will always be pretty awesome. Shining Force was one of the first RPGs I ever played, and I basically played it to death, and I still do. When I saw Shining Force II in Blockbuster one day, I snatched it up pretty quickly and went home to play it. I never beat it because of that frickin’ Wooden Panel that I never knew how to get, but I continued to rent the game several more times, despite never getting past that particular part. Several years later when I finally got on the internet, I came to realize that Shining Force III had been released several years earlier. Needless to say, I really wanted to play it, but didn’t have a Saturn or the money to buy the game. However, just about four years ago, I finally managed to accrue enough money to buy a Saturn and the games from various people on Shining Force Central, and I spent a year going through and playing all three games.

I know you all are going to laugh at this and think it is pretty silly and ask “Why do you think your series is more deserving as love and support than out series?” Well, the answer is, it might not be. However, I do know that the series does deserve more love and with the recent undertaking of Shining Force Central to translate Shining Force III Scenario 2 and 3 into English (And German and French), the series has had a bit of a resurgence with its own fanbase.

Thanks everyone for reading!

The best game in the series was Shining Force 2 IMO with a close second on Shining Force CD.

edit: didn't know about the iOS version! Downloading right now!

For as long as I had a Genesis back in my day, I never played a Shining Force game. I finally got the chance when I bought the Sonic Genesis Collection for the 360. I really enjoyed what I played of Shining Force II and Shining In The Darkness, moreso Shining Force II. It would be nice to see a new entry in the series.

People's hope that classic Sega franchises will be handled with care by Sega 2010/2011 never ceases to amaze me.

Though I suppose if Camelot was given full reigns without Sega's direct involvement (other than using the franchise and publishing), it could turn out okay.

Well, we know Sega is going to shit on it. That's why we're not sending Sega any love. Just Camelot. :lol

Shining Force 2 is EASILY my favorite Genesis game of all time. I've only ever played the first two games in the series but that's enough for me to fall madly in love with the Shining Force name. I'd love to play through SF3, but the lack of English makes that impossible for me, obviously. I'll have to snatch that Game Gear game sometime, though.

I'll gladly write a letter to whomever expressing my love for the series, when I find the time. And I've never made a Youtube video before, but I might have to for this. :D

I'd only save it if they didn't make it 3D, and kept the 2D-style of 1 and 2 only (not CD).

...but they won't because they're too cheap to spend on 2D sprite games.

But Sega WILL have to be involved, and that's a scary risk to take.

I think a better idea would be to campaign Camelot to do a "spiritual successor," with their own IP.

i'll support this with all my might. every true Shining Force game i've played was a diamond. 1-3, CD etc. are one my most replayed games to this day. only Suikoden and Shenmue could challenge them.

the best of the best.

just played Shining Heart a few days ago, other than Tony's character designs which I like, it is..not fun at all imo, outdated systems all around with collecting materials and baking bread as the main thing to do.

Shining Force Feather is actually a pretty decent SRPG taken on its own merit, but it is nothing like the old SF games. It's also not even translated. I don't think Sega really cares about the opinions of Western gamers when it comes to Shining Force, sadly.

What are you talking about? Well I'm just going to go back to playing my official copy of MOTHER 3 in English and then play some Earthbound on Virtual Console.

So why doesn't Camelot just create a new fantasy-themed series based on the same gameplay style and mechanics that we know and love Shining Force for?

I don't ever remember being completely smitten with the story in Shining Force I and II, but the gameplay was terrific. It's not like SEGA has copyrights to the gameplay style, right? I would think it should be rather easy for Camelot to create a new, sprite-based IP that plays like Shining Force I / II / CD, etc. and distribute it across PSN/XBLA/Steam/iOS, etc.

Right?

Do we really need more SRPGs?
Sure Shining Force 2 is one of the uh...1 SRPGs that I actually like but come on. We're talking about a genre that sees a dozen games a week being released.

Please teleport me to whatever alternate dimension you live in.

Why is this a Shining Force campaign and not a Shining campaign? If Camelot is given the reigns again I'd be thrilled to get any and all Shining titles they're interested in making.

I am glad to see this is about Camelot, though, and not simply a "make Shining Force turn based again but I have no idea who made the good games in the series nor do I care" campaign.

Yep. This is Sega we're talking about. They'll give you something completely different from what you enjoyed and wanted more of. :(

Shining Force Neo was one of the best PS2 games. Is that covered in your petition?

Exa was better, and nope.

Also, this isn't a -petition-. Not a lot of names are going on a list to beg Camelot for anything. It's more of a "show your appreciate for the developers" campaign.

Right?

The plotlines of the first two Force games combined are equal to about one 50th of the volume of game 3. I haven't finished the last scenario yet but I like Garm and some of the threads and ideas from Holy Ark onward. Ultimately it would be the second best thing if someone would just pay Camelot to make SRPGs again - perhaps a Golden Force or Shining Sun?

An admirable effort, but doomed to fail, methinks.
I really wish we had gotten Shining Force Feather.
Neo and Exa were excellent. The only thing they lacked was multiplayer.
Oh, and a smooth framerate, I suppose.
Oh, and a decent script and voice acting that wasn't positively abominable.

Still. Baby steps.
I'm just happy to see Camelot working on any kind of RPG again.
The gap between Lost Age and Dark Dawn was... worrisome.

It will forever sadden me that I never got to play Shining Force 3. I still own a Saturn, but it feels pointless because I don't have Shining Force 3 and Panzer Dragoon Saga.

Also: did I trip and fall into some alternate universe in which Shining Force Neo and EXA are considered good games, 'cause I remember them being mediocre at best (and def. not testament to the greatness of the original games in the series).

You make it sound like this isn't correctable. Shining Force III is not a rare game.

I was bummed Shining Wind didn't make it overseas since I quite liked Tears.

Agreed. =/ Wind had the more interesting characters, also. I doesn't surprise me at all, though, given how some review places trashed the game when it wasn't that bad outside of technical issues.

Scenario 2 is... somewhat. But, you can at least play it is English now! Well, most of it.

Eh, Neo and EXA are some of the best games to come out of the series, along with Shining Soul 1 and 2. To not include them in the "showing support campaign" is a little silly, as they are extremely solid titles within the series lineage.

So terrible, it's awesome!
Though it bears mentioning that any time the main character speaks to a royal, makes for even worse VA, IMHO.

A Shining Force game not made by Camelot... is not Shining Force.

But, correct me if I'm wrong: wasn't the campaign being proposed in this thread directed towards requesting the revival of the Shining Force series as we originally knew it? I fear that if we start championing games like Neo and EXA, then we're increasing the likelihood that we'll just get more of these derivatives.

While I'm sure some people loved Neo, EXA, and the Soul series (I wasn't one of them), I don't think they are true to the series form that most of us wax nostalgia for, and shouldn't be included as part of the campaign that's been detailed in the original post.

I think the problem is people thinking that the non-strategy games are a new thing or that they were the defining aspect of the series.

Shining in the Darkness came BEFORE Shining Force and Shining Wisdom and Shining the Holy Ark came out amidst the other main Force games.

Its really funny that you bring this up. We had a small audience with a couple of the SEGA executives at E3 earlier this year...went so far as to propose they bring back SF (the original). Even put forth this pic as an example of the art style that could be used (I'd always been a fan of all the core sf titles, up through iii on the Saturn):

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2139313/Portfolio/2-D Artwork/Videogame HD Remixes/Shining Force HD.jpg

They seemed interested in resurrecting this and potentially other series at the time. Unfortunately, as with many of these things, we haven't heard much more since.

Holy shit that's amazing!

Shining in the Darkness came BEFORE Shining Force and Shining Wisdom and Shining the Holy Ark came out amidst the other main Force games.

Our biggest problem wasn't with the fact that Shining Force Neo/EXA were made. They in themselves were good games. It's the fact that Sega put FORCE in the titles, when they had nothing to do with the FORCE style of games. It's false advertisement.

Shining Tears and Shining Soul II were good games; they were like Shining Wisdom before. So, we didn't have a problem with those sorts of games.

But, do remember that Shining in the Darkness, Shining the Holy Ark, and Shining Wisdom were all different genres of games, but none of them contained "Force" in the title. Only the 8 I mentioned before and they all had that common word in the title.

One of my favorite series ever,1 and 2 where awesome SRPG`s and I only managed to play part 1 of III,paid close to 100 bucks at the time to buy it(just like I paid 125 for PD Saga),so yeah i`ll support this.

i replayed holy ark just last year and it still holds up very well, i wouldn't mind another one of those either.

however, SF is top priority for me.

awesome work as always from m0dus. i already knew that piece, but it never fails to impress me anew :D

Exec's from Sega of America or Sega Japan? Only Japan has the ultimate say.

People don't want the Shining series back, it never went away in the first place. People want the Shining Force sub-series back, and not only in name, but in gameplay as well. One without the other is useless for this campaign, no matter how decent the newer games are.

What I wouldn't do for a Shining Force III port or remix (all 3 scenarios of course)... Or a Shining 4. I loved these games' character designs and the fact they were more RPGish than SRPG (with explorable towns, overworlds, etc. Not really a fan of the menu-based towns in the typical SRPG).

I'd love for Camelot to resume work on the series (after another Golden Sun)! SitD/StHA weren't my kinds of games but I loved the Forces & Wisdom. What the series needs ta get back in the limelight is a big old compilation disc! All the Camelot Shining games on one disc! Then follow that up with new game in the series made by 'em! Its foolproof I tell ya!
