Shooter fans...

Border Down and Chaos Field... can you guys tell me more about these? I haven't played either game, unfortunately, and would love to get a quick rundown on both titles. What do you like/not like about them? Thanks!

I like how I own Chaos Field and the box is reasonably pretty, and I aquired it cheaply.

I don't like how my Gamecube is 200 miles away.
sorry.

Border Down, to me, is the pinnacle of horisontal shmups. Everything from the sub-genre perfected. You've got gorgeous graphical design, equally inspiring music, a gameplay system that is at once incredibly simple to use yet with so much depth to master. Widely varying levels with great bosses, a difficulty level that is just right and so on. It's feels classic and fresh at the same time. It's just such a quality package. I would probably marry it if I could.

Wow, if that's not a rousing endorsement, then I don't know what is! :D Thanks, man -- looks like I'm on a mission, and judging by the prices around the net, it could be an expensive one.

:lol I think Garegga's worse in that respect. :)
tiny bullets on detailed backgrounds that are mostly brown or gray, along with debris that is the same color as everything else.

i hate that game so much.

caves best influence on ibara are the bright colorful bullets.

most people dont like chaos field, not sure what else there is to say about it cause i havent played it. if you do decide to try it for the hell of it, the gamecube one is supposed to be improved over the dc one (no slowdown, new arrange like mode, and maybe some other stuff).

i never really got into border down when i tried when it came out, but i enjoyed it the last time i played it, which was like a year or two ago at arcade infinity. its got some old school feel in the level design, a bunch of obstacles and things going on everywhere to work against, as opposed to something like the open manic style of progear. i particularly liked the g-darius like big ass laser dueling, which i dont remember at all how it worked, but it was fun. if you like horis, youll probably like it.

i'm reliving gradius V, ikaruga and r-type final today! hooray!

i changed my mind about r-type final. it's great. sure, it's not as good as r-type delta but i still love it.

these games have so much class compared to those new school bullet-spray auto-death shoot em ups (well as classy as games with dripping brains and intestines can be)

you are now on my enemies list. unless you at least mention some examples instead of clumping all manics together. its not like gradius v and ikaruga dont have shitloads of bullets either.

oh calm down. just because i like r-type and ikaruga better doesn't mean i don't also love other shooters. i love all shooter games.. but i just think ikaruga and gradius are a more refined experience than those mars matrix or gigawing bullet spraying type games. having said that i have those games also. i have pretty much all shooter games and i like almost all of them.

QFT. Now if only I could see the pick-ups better! :)

Cool, AI used to be a regular spot of mine... usually at the IIDX machine or shooter/fighter alley. Then again, I haven't been there since New Year's Eve 2004.

Man, I could *not* get into that game. :( Wonder if my expectations were too high when I first playing the J-version... just felt so slow and boring. My fave still remains R-Type III on the SNES... GBA version was such a disgrace. :(

Check it out here... the crew at SRK have a great breakdown on all the sticks:

http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95713

Looking at that list, the RAP SA looks like your best bet if you want all Sanwa parts.

Cheers, that RAP SA looks *ultra* rare. Ebay would seem my only hope, if they ever turn up that is! Otherwise a modded RAP2 would suffice...

...going from vague memory here... the older sega virtua stick used sega parts. not as nice as sanwa/seimitsu, but decent. i think i read somewhere the new virtua sticks (ps2 and usb) use sanwa sticks, not 100% sure at all on that though. theyre moddable if you want, but its not a straight swap, gotta hack off a little plastic here and there iirc...

I managed to dig up this Japanese review of several sticks,

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20050408/ggl.htm

...the internals of the new SVS don't seem to house a Sanwa stick compared to the pics of the RAPs in the link. Looks like a Sega stock part...

Yeah, after some digging, my search came up empty as well. From what I've read, both the SA and SE sticks sold out almost instantly, and were only offered through Hori's site via mail order.

How different do the Sanwa buttons feel compared to the Hori buttons?

well i hate takumi games (other than mars matrix), so im fine with that (although i hate them for the 56468146810584681351384358153138435435023 point scores as much as the gameplay). i love ikaruga too, but its not like a bullet hell game cant be just as refined.

and if you have 'pretty much all shooter games' and like them all, you must like a lot of shit. not saying that as an insult or anything, just saying theres a lot of horrible horrible shooters out there.

the few times i got to go there, iirc the only shooters they had there were ikaruga, border down, and strikers 1945+ (strikers II for neo-geo basically). a bit lacking, but not bad. im still annoyed that i never remembered to try out fzero.

maybe it was the usb one...although now im doubting it. im pretty sure the new sega arcade panel controller is all sanwa (or seimitsu) stuff at least.

never used the hori ones, but im guessing its not a huge difference. sanwa buttons are soft/light touch to begin with, so its probably not gonna be a drastic change, like going from a crappy cheapo stick with spongy buttons to one with happ buttons w/clicky switches. if you do get a hrap, you should just try out the hori buttons for a while before deciding whether or not to switch.

Hey, I was looking at picking up Trizeal for Dreamcast. What's the word on that? Is it any good?

i doubt anyone here will agree, but i insist that trizeal is a really enjoyable shooter in the classic arcade style. the level design gets quite strong at stage 3, and there's even some scoring nuance -- shooting everything down in certain predetermined areas will trigger the appearance of stronger enemies (and new scoring opportunities), and there are medals like in raiden fighters or garegga. it came out very close to dragon blaze, so i never gave it the time it deserved...i'll play it some more when i bring out the dreamcast for under defeat.

I figure I have to bring the DC out for Under Defeat anyway, so I thought I'd pick up another shooter (Border Down is great, but Trizeal looks fantastic).

On top of that, the DC version lets you fly the XIIStag! :D

Trizeal isnt a bad game at all. It was probably the ugliest shooter on Dreamcast but gameplay was quite strong I feel. Personally had more fun with it than Ikaruga. (Yeah, I know Ikaruga is the better game and all...it just never really clicked with me)

Is Triangle Service still around?

I believe they are. I think a Trizeal port for PS2 just came out.

just saw something on shmups today about them actually:

Hey! Spot the Robot in Shiki III!

Apparently that's what Triangle Service wants you to do, judging by their new front page. That brownstoney mech from Trizeal LIFTING supposedly makes a cameo appearance in Shikigami No Shiro III.

Whoever does spot it, and e-mails the linkie on that page with proof (and/or an explaination?), gets a free poster, which might be the one being included in the SegaDirect LE of Trizeal PS2.

Sounds pretty nifty.
im guessing that whoever is left at triangle service did some contract work on shiki 3. from some shooter company interview thing a while back (in edge?), i remember them saying they do random work (programming, music, art, whatever) for other companies between games to keep income coming in.

Follow-up on Border Down... I was at my friend's house today, and he had this (he also had Chaos Field, but I didn't have time to check that out). He had his DC hooked up to this little 14" TV, but since it's a horizontal shooter, it didn't look like a handheld yoko game. :D

All I can say is, this game is pretty damn nice. I didn't get too far into it, but that Stage 2 music is really special... sounds like an oldskool Amiga .mod file, which absolutely rocks. The branching system based on performance is cool, and I also like that the game has an adaptive difficulty system, which keeps the game challenging!

The 3D in the game is actually quite good... it doesn't look very detailed upon first glance, but I think it's just because everything looks so clean. I really like that cityscape in the first level, and the multi-tiered bosses really feel like the bosses from games like Axelay, TF5, etc. It's great facing off against bosses oriented horizontally, after having played so many vertical shooters lately. So cool!

His DC d-pad was *shot* though, so it wasn't very responsive when I'd press left or right, but I managed to get to the 2nd level boss a few times. Nice difficulty curve! Gotta mention the music again... it was just so good, melodic, and memorable. I'm borrowing his game (after much resistance!), but hopefully I'll be able to find one for myself that won't break the bank.

I crashed Ibara last night with a friend...

It wasn't even like it was a disc problem because if it can't read the disc it'd just drop the music, not completely freeze up. What happened was that we were playing arcade mode co-op and were on the final stage causing massive explosions and the screen filled up with tons of debris and then when the next explosion started it just...froze...completely.

Weird, I'd never see a shmup crash a system before, let alone a game crash the PS2 anytime recently ^^;

ikaruga crashes my dreamcast every single time. although i'm positive it's a problem with my dreamcast (about to die forever) than a problem with the game.

If somebody can provide a better translation then the usual babelfish gibberish, that would be awfully nice.
Gamecube gets "Radirgy Generic", PS2 gets "Radirgy Precious". Each version gets its own exclusive mode of play and remixed soundtracks. Along with score attack and arcade modes. Both versions might get more content.
On occasion information addition! !
Presently, during ardent producing "Radirgy - GeneriC -" "Radirgy - PreciouS -" furthermore furthermore there is a possibility of the additional element,! ?
On occasion, in this page Freedom of Information Act schedule... YO! It checks well,!
At least, thats what I think it means. They better hurry up, this thing hits on 3/25, which ain't too far off.
Cel-shaded shoot-em-ups for the win.

I got my hands on the Under Defeat OST today (the same one that comes with the LE of the game in March), and it is seriously old school...in the best way. This OST has me so pumped to get my copy!

has anyone played the radirgy games? it looks really cool so im wondering how well it plays.. i'm thinking about grabbing it for ps2.
