Short demonstration of Wii U's April 2013 update

It's pretty sad that we have to get to a point where a company has to do this itself, and post-launch at that. Oh well, better than leaving it as is.

How is this impressive or making people "speechless" when it's now barely on par/slightly surpasses the 360 and PS3? lol.

People are just happy to see the improvement. Honestly, I am disappointed in my Wii U to this point. I am sure Nintendo will continue to make strides in the OS, but I fear that the next-gen consoles interfaces and services are going to blow the Wii U's away.

To be honest, at this point I think that miiverse should be an app available for Android and iOS devices because using a completely separate device would be a better user experience than the slow switching back and forth.

I think they're speechless because Nintendo actually uploaded their own comparison video.
Well...
Speechless.

But excited.

Nintendo Direct within 48 hours!
Doesn't really sound like it.

I mean, it's great that they are updating it. If any company were to follow through on promises, it would be Nintendo. It just seems a little silly.

Hehe. I am late to this, it's quite a sad little video... but it is an improvement. Its gone from "terrible" to "acceptable". Same game-quit-speed as a PS3, roughly speaking.

I bet it will never be as fast as suspend/resume though...

And at least you know Nintendo is listening to the complaints... still not sure releasing goofy comparison "tick sheets" and videos showing how sucky your UI was at launch is helping that much but ... progress, I guess?

It's a beginning but it really seems that they underestimated the difficulty of making an OS as complex as WiiU/3DS ones and didn't put manpower needed there. We really need to know what happened since 2010 at NCL.

I just want the ability to do nothing with the tablet controller unless it requires it. I don't want to use it for the store, miiverse, or anything else. I also want the ability to shut the controller off from the menu (not sure if this already exists, but I haven't seen it).

I like the idea of this. Also, they need to figure out a way to get the Wii U Pro controller working with Wii mode content that supports the classic controller pro. I'm not sure what this is so complicated.

Load times have massively improved going by that video, but they are not "good" or "short" yet, they still have a lot of work to do there. Still, it shows Nintendo is working on the problem. Good start!

I was not terribly bothered by the load times originally. Faster load times are definitely welcome though.

I just want some nice shiny new games.

Good improvement. With the second update cutting down the load times coming I believe this won't be an issue anymore.

I suspect it's because they've tried to lock down and isolate Wii mode as far as possible to make sure it can't be used as a vector to gain access to the Wii U for homebrew/piracy.

It looks like the Wii U menu has too many prompts. After you press the home button it asks you twice, if you want to close the darn software. People aren't idiots, they know they are pressing a home button.

WOW. That's a big big difference. That I'd say is my biggest complaint about the WII U besides accounts being locked to the console. The damn load times just for going between menus. It's downright atrocious. So I really can't wait for that.

Still takes too long, not impressed at all.

I don't see how it's "taking too long" compared to what we currently have. It takes my Wii, 360 and PS3 at least five seconds to exit a game back to the dash much like the post-update console video is showing.

This is great to bring it up to speed but if the Summer Update is going to continue making it faster then it'll almost be an instant transition between exiting a game. That would be damn impressive.

I'm more shocked that Nintendo released a video like this, almost acknowledging the fault. I think this is a huge improvement and a good step forward for the company.

I think people are foolish to downplay Nintendo - but the company is in a tough spot right now... I hope at E3 they come out swinging!

The video is to combat negative publicity, the slowness of the Wii U is already common knowledge amongst gamers who actually know what the Wii U is. It's just one of the many strikes against the system, potentially affecting sales. By showing this video they could be convincing fencesetters to hop on now that they are addressing some well-publicised shortcomings. Who knows, could help bolster developer confidence too to see Nintendo working to win favor in this way.

afiac Nintendo has everything to gain by uploading this video

For their next video they need to show the download and install of the update taking an amount of time comparable to everyone else instead of being roughly ten times slower.

This backs up my personal suspicion that the OS and OS apps on Wii U currently were basically stable (but only relatively so) beta versions that were locked down in order to meet launch. And that full development of the OS and various applications was still on-going up to and right through the launch period.

But, the video is a good sign they're performing serious work as we speak. The big one though IMO is Miiverse - considering how integral it is to the experience it really needs to be available as instantly as possible. It would also be good if it had more persistence the way the browser does.

Sickening....

THat's for just quitting a game? It took 20+secs? And now people are chuffed about 8 secs?
The fuck?

That's where i'm at. I mean i'm not expecting Nintendo to reach modern OSes in speed by any means, but certain things here should be loaded in the background, IMO, for it to have reserved 1GB.

It's refreshing to see Nintendo post such a candid video. This goes a long way in restoring confidence that the OS will receive speed improvements.

I would like to see an expansion of OS features by E3. A trophy / achievement system would be nice. Something to build out the Miiverse experience so it isn't just a glorified message board. Don't get me wrong, I think what Nintendo is doing is unique and in the right direction, but they need to start fleshing it out. The Playstation 4 online experience will set a new standard.

or maybe some LAN tunneling software or something, that'd be the bomb diggity

Yeah people should be up in arms about this improvement. I for one went to the local pub and punched eight people (one for each second) in the face because I was so mad at this news. How many more will suffer come the summer update?

I wish it was faster still but I'm so glad that stupid "please wait" balloon is gone. It makes me RAGE.
the chimey bell thing at 40 seconds is the thing that annoys me, ever since watching a livestream of that guy who got his early, and it was that chime for like an hour straight :p

Why? Both the 360 and PS3 interface received multiple iterations, addressing both speed and cosmetics, over the life of those platforms.

Very plausible.
