Should Anakin Skywalker be recast for Episode VII?

Besides Leo Howard as some sort of young Jedi, I'd like to see Idris Elba in the cast somewhere. Son of Mace Windu or Lando Calrissian...or just a new character/Jedi...I like Idris Elba as an actor.

Natalie Dormer as a female Jedi. She does Fencing in real life and she was cool as Anne Boleyn in the Tutors.

I can see them finding a recast for Luke, but Han not so much.

Chewbacca should be ok. I'm sure we'll get CG chewbacca though.

;(

Please. No more Anakin Skywalker. Be bold and put some new characters in.

That moment more than anything in the Prequel Trilogy I truly hated. Look at his smug face. UGH. Also it makes no sense. Why is Obi-Wan still an old man but Anakin got to be young again?

its not his fault, hayden didnt even KNOW that was going to be in the movie, they did the shot from a costume test, so he wasn't even acting. Yeah... yeah.

I'm really excited that Lucas isn't writing this.

Hayden acted a lot better than Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher did, people were just more happy to accept those movies and their lousy acting.

In the original Star Wars Hamill couldn't have been better. I'm watching it right now. Hamill IS Luke. People own their roles in Star Wars there is no lousy acting besides maybe some Carrie fisher moments.

What? No. No. Nononono

Luke is the worst thing about A New Hope. Luke’s arc in the film is from being a teenager with hopes and dreams to being a teenager with hopes, dreams and a lightsaber. Oh, and, just as an aside, he gets to fly a spaceship and save the day. The petulance pays off over the trilogy, but he's a real dork through the first one.

I want none of the old cast back. None.

Mark Hamill's revenge by putting up some white and green paint on his face and having a jolly good laugh with blowing up the entire studio ("hey Bats! SMIIILE!") is something I would consider a likely thing to happen.

One exception: it's LANDO time, baby!

(anyone else watch Robot Chicken?)

Ehhh, what?

I naturally assumed that this would be a ALL NEW set of movies taking place sometime in the distant future featuring all new characters. What would be the point of trying to go forward directly after the events in the first 3 movies?

Do something interesting and set this shit in the future, showing a new group of characters doing a new journey.

Also, is it confirmed that it's live action? Both the clone wars shorts and the clone wars show has shown the power of animation for this series.

I really doubt these movies will use the same characters. Disney knows plenty of kids don't give a shit about the original trilogy and don't know anything about it. They're not going to tie this trilogy to the old trilogy.

Isn't that the entire point of the first film? Then Empire comes and it's slightly darker. Then came the Ewoks..then came the ewoks..

Why don't you read the op? Isn't it supposed to be a bannable offense to post without reading???

Um I did read ? Hes still dead

Im directing my answer to you and anyone else that believe anakin should be recasted. He shouldn't. Hes dead , why should there be a discussion? Because he came back as a ghost for 10 seconds? If anyone needs to be recasted/brought back ..its obi-wan or luke.

I would say, "why should Anakin be in VII at all?" but then I take a step back and realize that Anakin is the only character to make an appearance in all six films (plus Obi-wan if you want to include ghosts). Still though I think if Anakin played any role at all it should just be a voice.

He's also dead, so I'm not seeing your argument.

R2-D2 is in all 6 films.

Fencing isn't anywhere near the same as lightsaber fighting.
LS is hack and slash posing vs fencing which is pretty much acrobatic tag.

The prequels turned lightsabers into blaster angling bullshit.

Just like everyone in this thread, I'm oozing with excitement, however I'm also terribly worried about the end-result.

They should cast me as one of the Jedi council to ensure that all goes well.

Hayden was great in Shattered Glass.

No he wasn't. He was absolutely revolting in Shattered Glass. The only reason you think that is because it was a solid script and interesting story. Peter Sarsgaard made him look like an idiot child, and with Hayden chewing up scenes that could have been fantastic.

Sorry. This just bothers me more than anything. Shattered Glass at least had a chance to be a solid movie before Hayden's shittiness wrecked shop. The prequel trilogy was doomed from the beginning regardless of who played Anakin.

Luke is a random dorky farm kid going on galactic adventures. That doesn't make him the worst thing about New Hope. That makes him the best thing about New Hope. He was a human character in which the audience could emphasize with - something absolutely lacking from the prequels. It's pretty basic cinema 101. Mark might have chewed up some scenes with a lack of talent at the time, but his character was necessary and he improved just dandy over the course of the trilogy. I'd describe his early naivety as a happy accident that lead to assumed character development despite George and crew not actually writing in a whole lot of actual character development.

Do you HAVE to have the same characters from the other six movies again? Really now.
Yes, if you want any continuity you do. Sure, you can make a movie about characters completely unrelated to the previous ones with a plot that has absolutely nothing to do with the previous ones and the only connection being the lore, but you can't really call that Episode VII.

They said they are making Episode VII, so for now (and until I hear otherwise) I am going to assume they mean what they say. They didn't say they are making a 7th Star Wars film, or Episode 16, they said Episode VII. That means it follows chronologically shortly after Episode VI and has some direct ties with it.

There was a huge gap between Ep III and IV, I see no reason why it can't be a sizable break (if not the ideal complete clean break).

It can be a sizable gap, and most likely will, but there's no way it will be a complete clean break from the main story.

More than likely they'll skip the whole Luke recreating the Jedi Order and new Republic finishing off most of the remaining imperial forces and start from there, so like a III-IV gap. Definitely not going to take place right after the fireworks though, each film has at least some noticeable gap aside from V to VI.

I hope it takes off hours after the Death Star explodes. Rebels flee Endor moon as the debris from the fleets/death star cause apocalyptic firestorms on the planet.

Ya know, that actually would be a cool way to start the movie. Right after the script ends pan the camera over and see Death Star II explode, then quickly pan the camera down to Endor as the rebels flee the falling debris and then perhaps a few lines and then skip forward in time to when the new Jedi Order has already been established.
