I'm afraid I haven't read the entire thread, but is LED frowned upon? I have no idea what to do and I am about to invest in a 40+" TV. Please help guys.

Mostly gaming and movies (DVDs, haven't begun collecting BD) I suppose. How are plasmas in the way of imprints? Or was that problem resolved eons ago?
Thanks
Depends on how many hours you use it continuously. I don't usually keep my tv on for more than 2 hours: I had three plasmas (all from panasonic) and never had any problem with imprints. Then again, you could have some with hud in games and such, but they usually go away after a few hours and there are built-in modes in newer tvs that can take care of that for you. You really have to treat it really badly to have any permanent damage to the panel, I guess (even if there's a few people now and then saying they had problems and they used all the necessary precautions... but they're probably exceptional cases).
I have a Panasonic 42ST30 in case you're wondering, it seems to be one of the most popular in this thread and it's actually awesome for his price and even in his own good.
About LED, to put it simply: they tend to have high response times, and you want to avoid that when playing videogames. They're ok for movies though. Another thing is I have the impression that for the same price you can get a better plasma than a led: there's a lot of not-so-good models at cheap prices and you have to spend more than you would for a decent plasma to get a decent led.
Also, sorry for my crappy english, second language![]()
So GAF for gaming LCD-LED only pro is less power consumption over standard LCD????

I picked up a U30 Panasonic plasma, and want to play GT5 for say, 2 hours, should I worry about retention? I'm so scared!
Has anyone got this sexy beast?
Reviews seem pretty good but I was hoping for some owners impressions.
I'm guessing this is the 929 in the US.
Local dimming does not work when set to game mode, making the full LED array that you spent so much money on irrelevant. When playing games, the picture you get will be comparable to the HX820 or the NX720. Sure you can opt to play games on different settings for local dimming, but expect an unacceptable amount of input lag. Sony sets have a lot of post processing going on to improve the picture (mainly for films), more so than other brands, so don't count on it being something you can get used to.
As a gaming television, I cannot recommend it. Not for the price it demands.
Should you choose 1080i or 720p on a set-top box and why?
I have TV's with 1080p native and 720p native.
I'm use to my satellite box being able to switch between both by itself.
I'm thinking about getting a low-end 60" Sharp. Any opinions on the LC60E79U (LCD) vs the LC60LE640U (LED) ?
(I don't want plasma because I have left games and shows paused for 30-90 minutes at a time in the past.)
Picked up my 55" ST30 on Monday and am working on D-Nice's slides. The wait is killing me.
So I'm thinking about picking up some 3d glasses to go with the set and figured I'd ask GAF about what glasses work well, and what some good content is to showcase it.
From what I understand the panasonic 3rd gen official glasses are the best, but they are around 2-3 times as expensive as other brands (though I have found a few sites selling them for around 60 bucks). So between the SainSonic, Xpand, and even the ps3 / sony brands.....does anyone have any experience with them and have a recommendation?
As far as content goes, I have a 360 and PS3 so any game / blu-ray that handled 3d particularly well would be great to know.
plasma
deadly premonition looks so much better on a plasma. people often call it a bad looking game...thats just isnt the case. its an amazing looking game you just need to have the right set up. if you want to game it out with deadly premonition i couldnt recommend a plasma enough OP...i bought one purely for deadly premonition and never looked back
I did this test recently myself. I bought both a new sony LED and Panasonic plasma. One for my gaming room and one for my living room. Being a techy and a gamer of course I tried out my consoles on each of them.
the verdict:
the Sony LED quite handily kicked the plasma's butt. The LED picture was bright vibrant and crisp where as the plasma was blurry and colors a little more subdued. Blacks on both were excellent but the whites and brighter colors were just so much better on the LED.
For me led all the way.
Which Panasonic did you buy?
Which is cheaper, LCD or Plasma? I'm trying not to spend anything over 300 for a HDTV. Not looking for anything large or whatever because my room is somewhat small.
I suppose plasma might be cheaper, but cheap plasma is awful.

Fair enough, I have only seen a D-ILA the once and the blacks were amazing, after that going back to dark scenes on my own setup was painful.
Did you spend much time with the 7800D? that was something I was looking at myself.
Yes, do it!Ok guys, I can get a brand new Panasonic ST30 46" plasma from my friend for $600. He used it for a couple of hours and decided he wants an LCD. I can sell my LG 42" LD450 LCD S-IPS for $400. Should I grab the ST30?
Can I ask what you're running right now?
My TV (Samsung PN51D550 )suffers from MAD image retention.
I've been playing Lego Star Wars III most of the week, and every 20mins or so I have to pause it to run the screen-wipe for 5-10mins to get rid of the after image of the black circles from the corners of the screen (where it shows what character you're controlling).
Had the same problem with Dragon Age: Origins.
Ever since around Christmas time I noticed the Cartoon Network logo was showing up every time I started the Xbox (cos it's a pure white screen).
Not watched CN since then, but if I go up to the screen when it's pure white (like a couple of inches away) I can still just about see it. It's not a problem when we're watching anything, but just knowing it's still there infuriates me.
I'm also getting sick of my GF complaining (rightly so) that we can't watch what we want when we want incase we end up damaging the screen. We don't watch a huge amount of TV, but we play a lot of games and watch a lot of movies/TV shows on DVD and Blu Ray. We used to spend lazy Sunday afternoons going through entire anime series and what-not, but now we have to run the damn screen wipe for 5-10mins inbetween episodes if they're 4:3.
We bought it around September time, and I ran the break-in slides anytime we wasn't watching anything. The TV was on constantly for about 2 weeks because of this. All the settings were lowered as recommended.
I did remember there was a setting called "Cell Light" (the only one amongst the standard Contrast/Brightness/etc that was on a 1-20 scale rather than 1-100), so I turned that down last night from 16 to 12 and recalibrated accordingly. Hopefully that will help somewhat. I've had a look around but can't find any info on what the setting does (other than reduce the overall brightness of the picture) or if setting it lower will help me somewhat.
Anyone got any tips for me. I hate having spent all this money for an otherwise amazing TV and not actually be able to use it for fear of doing anything to permanently damage it (if it isn't already permanently damaged - thanks Cartoon Network, YOU FUCKERS!!!).
I don't know man. Retention is just part of the plasma experience. My G20 has it too. Personally I don't care about it one bit since, like you say, it's basicallty only visible on a completely white background. Just get over it.
It's not just that, that's only minor and I acknowledge it as such. Annoying as all hell, but still minor.
The thing about not being able to watch anything with static elements (whether that be huds or borders) for more than 20mins or so without leaving retention that doesn't go away without 5-10mins of wiping is a real problem.
How can I enjoy a game or TV show or movie when I know that just by using them as intended I can be damaging the TV that I spent a large amount of money on?
I have the 3rd gen Panny glasses and I have no real complaints about them. They are super light in weight, yet are sturdy. They hold a charge well and I haven't had to really fuss with them to set it up.
I've used the Xpand glasses on my friend projector setup and I don't like them at all. They were more dark then a lot of other brand glasses I've had the chance to use. The felt really cheap and were not comfortable for me to wear (I wear glasses). The Panasonic ones fit without me having to mess around with them on the bridge of my nose for half a movie.
I'm loving my ST30 55", but I pretty much hate the Sony Playstation branded 3D glasses I bought to go with them. They display reflections of anything behind you, and it always feels like I'm ever so slightly out of focus with them.
If you've got to get glasses to go with your panny plasma, I suggest going with something else, even if they are the cheapest option around.
